Warren Zevon is a legend and so sorely missed, gone too soon from cancer. He has a vast collection of thoughtful, humorous, and creative songs. RIP Warren, I hope you are enjoying your sandwiches ♥️

FYI, Lon Chaney and Lon Chaney Jr were both Hollywood actors going back to the 1920's who were famous for portraying the fictitious monsters such as werewolves, vampires, etc. in some of the early horror movies.

You should listen to "Keep me in your heart for awhile." It was written while he was dying of cancer. Very touching song.

Yes there are movies, Werewolf of London. The original was 1935, another in 1941 and a newer version in 2017, also in 1981 the movie An American Werewolf in London. In the 1941 version The Wolf Man, actor Lon Chaney Jr. was famous for play the part as the Wolf Man.

Lon Chaney was a silent film actor who played The Phantom in the Phantom of the Opera. He was called the Man of a thousand faces. His Son is Lon Chaney Jr. who played the Wolfman many times over. He also played Lenny in Mice and Men.

Awesome choice you guys - for me, this is the ultimate Halloween song, and just a plain fun, killer tune anytime of year. If you like this, you should check out Warren's song, 'Lawyers, Guns and Money' - another great tune for sure. Great reaction as always - much love from Canada!

This blues-rock song comes from the album Excitable Boy, which was the first album I bought from Warren/Chicago. He was always somewhat overshadowed by the great Bob Seger. I also like the fantastic songwriters Jackson Browne (albums for 50 years) and John Hiatt, as well as Canadian Bruce Cockburn. Of course, Bruce Springsteen was also one of them at the beginning in he 70ties, becoming more and more rock-oriented until his commercial radio song album BITUSA.

You mention Jackson Browne, I saw Warren Zevon on the same bill , supporting Jackson Browne at the Dominion theatre in London in the late '70s . Great night.

Unfortunately I only saw JB once at the Rockpalast in 1986, he had a fan base in Germany, also because of the US NATO soldiers. Because of the critically thoughtful lyrics, some Americans turned away from him. Somehow I missed JB in Montreux, bought the broadcast concert. The Late For The Sky phase was unique and brilliant, but I also like his pop-rock critical phase, of course also songs like Sky Blue And Black. Have fun with all kinds of good music.@@BrixtonTone

I'm with Dominika this will be stuck in my head all day. Lol I remember this from way back. Just a humorous, nonsensical song but then I am not a very deep thinker. 😉😄 If there is a deeper meaning to this song I apologize to the songwriter. Happy Halloween to all.🕸🕸👻💀🎃🎃. Peace✌

Song began as a joke by Phil Everly (of the Everly Brothers) to Zevon in 1975, over two years before L.A. recording sessions for ["Werewolves"]. Everly had watched a television broadcast of the 1935 film Werewolf of London and "suggested to Zevon that he adapt the title for a song and dance hit or a disco hit." Zevon played with the idea with his band-member bassist and guitarist, who (all three) wrote (the lyrics and melody to) the song together in about 15 minutes. These were transcribed by Zevon's wife Crystal, however, none of them took the song seriously. "Lee Ho Fook" was a Chinese restaurant on 15 Gerrard Street - in London's Chinatown, in the West End of London. "BBC Radio 2" listeners rated this song as having the best (song) opening lines: "I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand". After Zevon's death in 2003, friend Jackson Browne stated that he interpreted the song as describing an upper-class English womanizer: "It's about a really well-dressed, ladies' man, a werewolf preying on little old ladies. In a way it's the Victorian nightmare, the gigolo thing."

Another vote for "Lawyers, Guns, and Money." Again, with very few words he uses, you know there's a lot of intelligence behind it. In Werewolves of London (it's interesting to have to explain these things because the humor (by and large) in the US is understood, so I have to go deep on this one.) In part, it's just the ridiculousness of the song--that's the simple answer. But in a way he's painting a world where Werewolves exist, have human traits, and can be seen on rare occasion at some dark-alley hangout frequented by gangsters. Their mystique gives them a sort of sex appeal--and they obviously have a flare for fashion. As per Lee Ho Fouk's, I just have to assume it was a place he went to in London at some time that might have been both odd and perhaps a bit scary. And so personalizing the place, he just makes you want to scour the back alleys of London to find (as, of course a place like that wouldn't show up in the phone book). He uses London as his backdrop because England is where, legend has it, werewolves roam. He may also have been talking to an educated group of people in the US who know that Soho is and area of London and Kent a county in England. Lon Cheney was a big horror film star in the 1920s or 30s and those who would be listening to this song probably had no memory or only a vague idea of him (even in the 1970s). And although I've heard of Lon Cheney Jr., I must admit I have no idea who he was (other than related to Lon Cheney?). Hope that helps. Again, in Lawyers, Guns, and Money, you have to let your imagination run. I was in college when I first heard it, and for a young man full of spit and vinegar, I hoped my life would lead me to picking up Russian agents posing as waitresses and hiding out in the jungles of Honduras. (I mostly hang out in my apartment now.)

Hi again you guys....In the 60s...I think there was an old black and white film with this name title...also there was one made in the late 80s or early 90s called...An American Werewolf in London. RIP Warren Zevon. He would be glad you guys listened to his music. Also, a suggestion...would you guys give a listen to, Bob Dylan----The Beatles---David Bowie---Alice Cooper---The Travelling Wilburys just to name a few---they are all amazing. I'm sure you will be impressed. As for Dire Straits, which I know you both love...here are a couple more suggestions you WILL love. Wild west End. Follow me home. Six blade knife. Fade to black. My parties. peace and love A and D.

It's so funny how Halloween (all Hallows Evening, Samhain) originated over in the UK from the Celts which then later mixed with the Norse holiday of the same token, and then lastly Christianity, yet the popularity of celebrating declined over there and surged here in the States. Now it's coming back in popularity across the pond, where it ultimately originated. LOL. You should also look into Guy Fawkes Day over in England, also known as Bonfire Night(?) Also, speaking of holidays on video games, my favorite was on World of Warcraft when they'd decorate for Halloween and Christmas, and give you holiday related quests! So I totally get the game holiday excitement! Lol.

It IS a joke song. You also need to understand metaphor. A werewolf is a being that is human by day but transforms into a monster to prey upon mortals at night. Someone who is of standing and esteem in public but moonlights bad behavior behind closed doors or after the sun goes down.
