The Warrior Philosopher

Күн бұрын

Walking home from the gym on my schizo grind to share some wisdom on the Martial Ideal and Warrior ethos referring to Mishima, Nietzsche, Evola, Jünger, D’Annunzio and more. Will begin reading Mike Mentzer soon as well.

Its the same as the lessons from LOTR, Theoden and Rohirrim riding to their death, Sam and a few others overcoming the allure of the One ring. Moral victory over material gain. Your friends are heroes in that sense.

They had the ethos that when we win, will be used not in vain but for our upwards trajectory towards higher existence.

12:24, yes evola was dead wrong about tradition on that part. Way too saturnian.Tradition must serve a purpose and that purpose goes forward with the changing times.

Evola talks about the Four Ages (Golden, Silver, Bronze, and Iron). Spengler likens them to Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. So Evola is not saying “we have to go back.” We can only “move back” by moving forward. This is the meaning of Eternal Recurrence, which Eliade also talks about.

Mentzer was a huge Ayn Rand fan. He incorporated alot of her Objectivist philosophy into his bodybuilding advice.

I think certain aspects of Rand (haven’t read her books yet just writings about her) are interesting but I tend to believe in an Individualism combined with a collective Ethos like the Greeks or Romans being heroic, but within their city state or Roman identity rather than sole individualist self-interest like Rand seems to describe with Gaults Atlantean utopia. I still intend to read Atlas Shrugged one day because I’m sure it’s still valuable.

Mentzer was also pretty big into Nietzsche as well. There’s this one chapter in his last book where he wrote about what he would do the night before he went to the gym. In which, he talks about how he would read Nietzsche and listen to classical and heavy rock music to get himself into the right state of mind for his high intensity workouts. He describes these rituals as cultivating a “siege mentality” (the channel heavy duty college has a very good reading of this passage). More than anything though, I love Mentzer’s willingness to go against the herd and his relentless sense of integrity that allowed him to hold true to his values even when it costed him dearly.

Ayn Rand, Eugen Sandow, Joe Weider, and bodybuilding by extension are all Jewish. Achilles and Hercules were warriors. Narcissus was the one obsessed with his self-image. Learn to fight through boxing or MMA.

Curious to know what other's opinions are on maintaining a warrior ethos while serving in 'non-frontline' capacities: logistics /MX/engineering/ordinance etc

As someone who was a fellow POG, I always give respect and defer combat experience judgement to the grunts, I would say make sure you take advantages of exercises/deployments and make yourself dangerous in your personal life (martial arts, working out). Plenty of grunts don’t deploy while POGs do. I consider 0311’s more badass than me, doesn’t mean you can’t also cultivate a warfighter mentality. Idk what branch you are but in the Marines, everyman is a rifleman. No one asks your MOS when rounds are flying down range.

Great stuff, as per usual. I'm often surprised by people who claim to be on years or decade(s)-long journeys of discovering self who have never trained in a martial art or been in a fight. How well can one truly know themselves if they're never in a real-life struggle for survival at least once? Don't read me wrong anyone. I'm not advocating for anyone to look for fights or start trouble. I am saying that training to defend yourself if you or a loved one or an innocent is attacked is often a humbling and perspective-broadening experience, and both are invaluable as you endeavor to become your ideal version of self.

Absolutely. Ultimately our philosophies and ideals lack real value unless they have the ability to be manifested beyond the theoretical and into actual life, hence why all men ought to have a relationship with violence.
