Just a word from the wise on these bunkers..... Back in the 1970s a lot of farmers (who owned these bunkers, and others like them) were pretty much forced to use them for slurry storage, pig slurry in the main, when it was impossible to get on the land with the tractor and slurry tanker. In many cases the slurry was more or less forgotten about. Over the fifty years or so in-between, the slurry has broken down and the solids have fallen out of suspension, bacterial decay has ceased and what remains is raw pig piss with a thin layer of faecal matter covering the bunker floor. I'm not saying this is the case here, but it's worth bearing in mind if you plan to be wading in "unknown waters" as it were. Fifty year old slurry looks just like clear water! I recently visited an ROC bunker which was used for slurry storage - I know, because it was ours - and there were no nasty smells or fumes etc to indicate anything untoward. I wouldn't like to say if there are any health risks associated with the "water" but I, for one, wouldn't be wading in it. Just be aware of the potential......

I live in a house on RNAS Ford or HMS Pereigrine and there is still a lot of wartime structures around. My house used to be two ground crew homes built in the 30s, that we have knocked into one house. In what used to be the back entrance to one of the houses we now have a laundry room, and our tumbler dryer sits on a shelf, which used to be top of a steel reinforced air raid shelter, hence why it is still there. One of my neighbours told me that when he removed his it was an absolute nightmare.

Ever looked at RAF Bexwell, at Downham Market? It has a battle headquarters built in a bridge over a ditch. A lot of the buildings remain, used by small businesses and farms, but the main runways were taken up in the 70's & 80's.

At 13.50 that is where a semi rotary hand pump was fitted. The central hole is for the cast iron boss on the back of the pump. so it can be mounted flush to the wall . If you find one of the pumps; look on the back and you will see the boss that has the rear bronze bush inside that supports the pump shaft.
