Was 14-Year-Old Who Died at Orlando Amusement Park Too Heavy for Ride?

Tyre Sampson, the gentle giant who plunged to his death at an amusement park in Orlando, Florida, stood at 6 foot 5, and weighed over 300 pounds. The 14-year-old had reportedly been turned away from at least two other rides at the park because of his size. The accident happened at ICON Park, where the 430-foot FreeFall ride is a popular attraction. In Europe, the maximum passenger weight on the ride is 287 pounds; in the US, there is no maximum weight restriction.

14 year olds don't have common sense? Don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming the boy (well, not only him), but when he realised that shoulder savety thingy wasn't properly and savely locked, he should have exited the ride right away. I've visited amusement parks when I was a teen a lot. I always made sure I was savely seated and secured before the ride started. Especially on rides like this one. But, I always cared for my life more than the adrenaline kick and peers pressure. I'm a woman tho, so maybe that also makes a big difference. And I'm sure a 14 year old TEEN (he was no kid no more) experiencing such a situation is no different than an adult doing so.

I just remembered this story, This was about 2 days before the accident. I remember flying to Orlando and so exited to ride all these rides at Icon Park. I saw many videos about this ride and hearing about how it was 400+ feet above. My dad told me that I shouldn’t go on this ride but I refused to listen to him. Then 2 days later, I heard of this accident where this poor 14 year old teen fell from the ride. After that, I was traumatized and refused to ride at any of the rides at Icon Park. It just killed me that they couldn’t See that Tyre was obviously too big for this ride. His seatbelt was on his shoulders which means he’s obviously too huge for the ride.. Moment of silence for this poor boys death.

@@December20th Crazy how that happened, but at the same time, it is expected. Getting on a 400ft hypercoaster is different from getting on a 400ft drop tower due to the lateral vs horizontal forces varying differently. The Drop Tower pulls up on your harness while getting launched down, and the Hyper-coaster pulls you back into your seat while the harness does its job at extra support, instead of it being stressed with excessive vertical forces.

The problem isn't the harness being locked and secured. The problem is when you have someone of that size, the harness can not come down far enough to push against the stomache or groin to keep you in your seat. It just rests at his chest. 3/4 of his body is just left to flail. He should have never been allowed on that ride and those rides should have seatbelts to keep people in their seats!

I remember when I almost fell out of a ride. I actually have had a couple close calls. The first time was on a ride called the ring of fire when I was about 9 or 10. The only thing preventing me from falling out of the ride was the fact that it had a roof, which I had the pleasure of head butting mid rotation. They had a lap bar with a large, cylender shaped foam covering that could rotate. So as the ride would go upside down, gravity tried to pull me out of the seat and the lap bar provided no safety and it even activly pulled me from the seat. My dad was also on the ride with me, he was bigger so that didn't help either. I desperately clung to whatever I could, sure I would somehow fully slip out and die if I did not.

Something similar happened to me too, when I was 9 I went on the Indiana Jones rode at Disneyland. At the time all the cart had was a lap bar. I rode with my dad, obviously a bigger person, so the lap bar wasn’t as snug as it could have been (and I was rather small for my age). During the ride, as it got faster and more jolty, i could feel myself lifting from the seat and I could have easily just slip out, if it wasn’t for my dad slinging his arm over my shoulders to hold me down. I didn’t pay attention to what was going on in the ride, I was just too scared about falling out. I don’t know what the ride is like now since I haven’t been on it since but I’ll never forget the feeling of nearly falling out of a ride.

Enh the weight thing can and can't be blamed on the parents, it could be an underlying medical condition that prevents weight loss, could be due to his height, lots of things over just unhealthy eating habits. BUT they should've been there and said something when the harness was visibly in a different position from the others, especially after being turned away from other rides. As long as the harness locks in place the ride operators typically won't say anything, especially in the present climate. They could be seen as discrimination because he's black and overweight. Tragedy all the way around but this is ultimately on the parents.
