Oh the irony, that Henry was the actual repeat cheater. Anne was constantly surrounded by ladies in waiting, those high born, or lady friends. When in the heck would she have the privacy to have a intimate affair. Another great vid Claire, thanks for your hard work💓🇬🇧💓🇬🇧💓🇬🇧

If Cromwell was asked by the king to secure proof of Annes guilt, could it be Smeeten was forced to name names and implicate himself also, as depicted in Wolf Hall? I am intrigued by the whole plot to get rid of Anne. I think Henry really didn’t need five men to be guilty of adultry with Anne, I would think one would have been enough. But as in Wolf Hall, Cromwell may have had a vendetta against four of them, conveniently, and the incest charge was thrown in to seal the deal.

In a court where privacy didn’t exist? As a Queen Anne would have been surrounded by attendants, because it was thought unthinkable for a queen to be left unattended. She even had a least two ladies sleeping in her bedchamber with her, and with her when she used her close stool.

I don't believe Anne would ever have cheated on her husband. She was a serious and genuinely religious woman, but I think there is some chance that Cromwell specifically targeted Smeaton for a confession and worked to get one out of him for the same reason he accused Anne with her brother George - because he wanted to destroy her good name and it would have been more of a degradation in a class-conscious society for her to have an affair with her servant that another member of the nobility. And Cromwell probably did indeed threaten Smeaton with the whole traitor's death with the promise of relative leniency if he cooperated.

@@saunaknandi1814 we have a verbatim record of the whole conversation, and nothing in it implies a plot. She made an off color joke suggesting that Norris’ refusal to marry Anne’s cousin was because he was waiting for the King to die so he could get with Anne herself, and Norris responded by rebuking her and reminding her that such a joke could be taken as treason.

From Anne's confession I don't think that she ever had romantic emotional feelings for anybody aside from King Henry. She tried everything she could do to work alongside him and help him with changes he wanted with the religious system and to make him happy and give him a son and other children. In fact, Anne would get horribly jealous if the king took off for long periods of time and she knew he wasn't out hunting. She had that woman's suspicion and there was a time when Henry was flouncing about with Jane Seymour, and Abne was furious with Henry. She was so angry and he basically told her that she better mind her betters like all her others. Henry didn't talk to her like that before they got married or before that first year so of marriage. Most Kings had Mistresses and I just don't think Anne Boleyn would have ever let that rest, and they would have fought constantly about it. Henry was well aware of that. Jane Seymour and her brothers were so ambitious that she put herself out there to be picked up by King Henry when he noticed her. Yet, she played a little hard to get but it wasn't for long like Anne. Henry may have been embarrassed with everything that was going on and his ego because of the rumors regarding and having Affairs when all of that was rumored and lied about. There's no doubt in my mind that Anne Boleyn beloved Henri probably more than most of his wives ever did from the way she treated him. Anne Boleyn was a super passionate woman and his other wives almost acted like children who were supposed to obey their father. When I look at the queens of England I see Catherine of Aragon because she would stand up to Henry at some point and she was coronated as Queen and then there was Anne Boleyn.. both of those women were the ones that Henry made the time and loved enough to have them coronated as Queen. Henry said he loved Jane Seymour more than the others but I don't believe that for a minute. He was still infatuated with her and they were not together long enough before she died. she was one of those girls that would have done if she got said like Daddy told her. He threatened her a couple times when she mentioned restoring the Abbeys. Jane deserved it because she finally got to be wife and then she had to deal with Henry's Wrath.. she had his son. and it was probably best that she died after childbirth because Henry would not have treated her well for very long. By that time Henry was pretty mad in the head and he was already having Mistresses so early in their marriage even before Jane. Pregnant. it's easy for a man to say they're in love with a dream because a wife died a year and 5 months after they married. that's a dream and not alive like he had with Catherine of Aragon or even the time he was with Anne Boleyn. Henry never had any of his other wives coronated and he had plenty of time to coronate Jane Seymour long before she got pregnant with Edward but he didn't make the time and he should have or I would think of her more as a true Queen of England. I look at Jane on the other wives as though they were Queen by marriage but they really weren't true Queens because of the lack of having a coronation.

I loved this post. Most people don't realize that A.B. was a woman of faith & believed in the reformation. For me, the charges always seemed trumped up & were more dependent on her supposed role as a "home wrecker". It seemed to me Henry wanted her gone & Cromwell was his henchman. So Henry VIII was married to Catherine of Aragon for 24 years and never tried to off her, just divorce her. But in a mere three and a half short years, Henry goes from marriage to off-with-her-head with his next wife. I get she was flirty, witty, and meddling in state affairs. He could have just sent her off to one of the country castles like he did with Queen Catherine and Anne of Cleves. She must have done SOMETHNG besides miscarrying a boy to set him off so badly that he had her executed. Afterall, Catherine had miscarried a bunch of boys and never lost her head.

Excellent attention to details, Claire. I agree that Anne would not have sworn on the sacrament that she was innocent if she had lusted after one of these men for the reasons you describe. You make a good point that her statement was a direct response to the accusations against her. I am so happy you'll be doing the countdown videos. Looking forward to see the day to day unfolding of this portion of Tudor history. Seems strange to say that because it's so tragic. History is more interesting to me than fiction. I can't see that Anne would have risked "sleeping around" with anyone. Never! Never! Never! Although she was the first of Henry's wives to be beheaded, she, not being a stupid woman, must have know this wasn't going to end well if the king discovered her. BUT spreading such rumors at court, maybe those who still supported the first queen, was a great way be rid of a new, unwanted queen. I believe this is what happened.

Mark Smeaton was the Tudor version of a rock star musician who received many gifts from admirers. Some suggest he was in a homosexual relationship with George Boleyn, a possible reason for his wife to testify against George. Because homosexual activity was punishable by death in England at the time, Smeaton may have figured that as he was facing death anyways that he might as well make a deal. Smeaton was the one who implicated the other four men who probably did not commit adultery with Anne.

Very interesting. Anne must have been a special woman to have inspired love in so many men, including a king. Do you think Cromwell targeted Mark Smeaton because he was the youngest and most likely to break under pressure, giving the prosecution the answers they wanted to further their case against Anne? Do we have any idea at all when Mark Smeaton was born? I know records of births for commoners were not kept like they were for nobility and royalty.
@Orphen42O
@Orphen42O 3 жыл бұрын
Didn't they find an unusual amount o money and expensive clothing in Mark Smeaton's possession? That doesn't mean Anne gave him gifts, but he may have been the recipient of gifts from other admirers? Although some movies and television shows depict him as a tremulous character, I have the impression that he was the Tudor equivalent of a rock star. Although I do not think Anne was a sensual woman, she may have taken pleasure from being admired by such an admired young man. Perhaps, tortured and fearful, Smeaton thought it was in his best interest to stick to his confession. As an inspiring musician, Henry might have been particularly upset by the thought of being betrayed by a younger, more musically talented man. In Henry's eyes, Anne's greatest sin may have been humiliating him and encouraging disrespect for him.

I don’t think adultery is such a huge leap for a woman who saw what happened to the Kings first wife after more than 20 years. She must have known being cast aside after less than 3 years of marriage was even worse it terms of her worth, and this was a woman who was heavily pregnant at her wedding. I don’t know why we can’t just see that it is not impossible that she desperately needed to provide a son. The reality is that nobody can say for sure.

One does wonder had Henry VIII been on trial as Anne , would he too been sentenced guilty? Would his execution be as mercifull as Anne’s? Or would it be as ugly drawn out as a full traitors death? I cant say as it just now occured to me, that Anne stood tried with All the things Henry VIII had done to her, and his first wife Cather8ne of Aragon. That he and Cromwell projected Henry VIII’s adulteres ways onto poor Anne. So horrifying. So sad. So oughful.

I said no he won't. He was in icy for a bit then woke up wanting to eat. It was a long recovery but he didn't die. I think at times sometimes in our darkest people are sent to us for whatever reason. I'm fascinated by King Henry and Anne . Have you watched on youtube by Suzzana Lipscombe the l lovers that changed history. ? I don't think he had a son to Anne's sister but he to Emily blunt. Funny all that time trying to produce a male heir yet it was Elizabeth who ruled for 40 years. Amazing. Anne would love today's time where women had a choice a voice and so much more. She would of been a feminist and a good but fair one at that. . I've also watched the Great fire of London. I've watched it all. If ever you want to talk I'm here. Are you in America ????

@Dana Davison high I've been through a lot more than that. Still am. Was diagnosed with lupus 4 years ago. It's awful. Then my ,16 year old daughter who I was very close to let a boy. Very nice. His family super rich. I'm just average. Long long story short he pretty much said your family or me. She picked him. She tried to maintain the relationship but it slowly dwindled. She blocked me I didn't don't know where she lives. The list goes on . A year later her younger sister took off at 14 I never heard from her again. It absolutely destroyed me. But I have a 15 yr old daughter who atm is going through deep depression and anxiety. She needs another op on her arm. Plus she has been bullied so bad it's no joke. That's just the tip of the ice berg. I do have ptsd plus anxiety and panic disorder. A l o t of it associated with lupus. I have chronic gastritis and inflammation but am allergic to everything or have horrid side effects. But life goes on. I have to. My 15 year old needs me atm. I'm her other arm. I'm in Queensland Australia. I love Dan Jones woot woot lol

I think I see a pattern with Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard. Both allegedly made comments about the king´s sexual abilities. I think it is possible they both sought advice from male relatives, Anne from her brother and Katherine from her cousin. Both George Boleyn and Culpepper knew the king very well. I never could understand why Anne´s brother had to be disposed of and this would begin to make some sense of it all. If Henry´s ability to father the needed son was seriously and publicly questioned, it could have far reaching consequences.

I think George had to go because he would have stirred up trouble if he hadn't been arrested. He was a strong personality and would have sought to save his sister.

Why did Henry end up hating Anne? Why could he not just divorce her? I bet Catherine of Aragon was feeling smug about it all... or was she? I don’t know 😅 loved this vid xx

By the time Henry started hating Ann, Katherine had already died. Also i believe he didn't divorce Ann because he didn't want to the possibility of another long drawn out divorce proceeding like he went through with Katherine of Aragon

Catherine had been a thorn in Henry's side from the moment he set her aside until her death. I believe that he didn't want to run the risk of leaving Anne alive and being another thorn in his side. I think love did turn to hate. Henry could see history repeating itself, he'd done so much to be with Anne and yet he still had no legitimate son and heir.

@@anneboleynfiles I wonder how much Henry's jousting injury changed him? Evidently, the type of injury he had could have caused a change in his personality; then there was the pain he suffered from then on, as evidenced by his reduced physical activity afterward and subsequent weight gain, and the difference in his temperament in general for the worse. What do you think?

It's obvious that I don't know the Bible well. I totally don't agree with Adultery being considered even if you lust after someone. In my mind it's impossible to not be attracted to someone if you're attracted to them. It's your actions that matter!!!!

I felt bad for anne and all those men who died who done nothing her brother hugged her and kissed her forehead the lady in waiting spread that,so can you not hug your sibling without being accused of incest? Also the violin player in the tudoer seris was protrayed as gay was he? He was comforting anne because she was heart broke again lady in waiting seen her kiss his cheek thanking him for his friendship. But there again he lost his life how sad i belive there was spies working for king provably by cromwell,four men beheaded who done nothing,poor anne didn't stand a chance ,i th ill nk Henry was being punished by God with ill heath for all his wrong doings he caused killing innocent people. He plotted to catch her in something. I'm glad i wasn't born back then i wouldn't marry the king no way,but it was ok for him to have affairs poor anne.

But didn’t she commit adultery with Henry the 8th in her heart? So it’s not impossible. Love your channel 🎉 just seems Anne B can do no wrong ...in any scenario .. ever No human is All good or Bad and we really don’t know .... what happened ☺️

How? Please can you share a source for that? There's certainly no evidence I've found for Anne having committed adultery in any way whatsoever. It's not impossible, but then it's also not impossible that Anne was an alien or that Henry VIII was gay, but there's no contemporary evidence for the theories. That's what matter, evidence. When you have a man like Chapuys, who hated the Boleyns, not believing the charges and recording that no witnesses or evidence were produced, that really tells you something. Exactly, every human is flawed, but it doesn't mean that we committed treason.

The Anne Boleyn Files and Tudor Society I’m defining adultery based on your words and scripture you read in this video. “ if you even desire someone etc ... that Anne would of believed this... etc Anne and Henry countless love letters and desire for each other were Long before Katherine of Aragon was “disposed” of.

But then Anne would have been convinced that Henry's marriage to Catherine was invalid as that's what her king was telling her and that's what his canon lawyers were telling him. Plus Henry was very much the aggressor in this situation. Anne told him no, left letters unanswered and even left court.

I've worn a replica of a dress from "The Tudors" series, but I've never worn an authentic costume. Last year on the Anne Boleyn Experience, we had a costume expert speak to us and then she dressed up two ladies in beautiful replicas of gowns from portraits. It was such fun.

From what I’ve read and seen it seems Anne only had one or two conversations with Smeaton. He was much closer to George than with Anne, though likely not quite as close as shows like The Tudors would have you believe.
