If Christmas was just a birthday celebration for Jesus the date might be important. But that’s not really what we celebrate, we celebrate God’s momentous breaking into human history by sending His Son into the world in mortal flesh. He was born in order to die for us, to pay the price for our sin, and to rise again, opening the way to eternal life for all believers. We celebrate the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus every day, but as humans having a special day of celebration for various things is a helpful and meaningful thing. It could have been a different day that we celebrated the birth of Christ, but this agreed upon date has served the church well for many many centuries.

I’ve heard some pretty persuasive arguments recently that the origins of Christmas are actually not pagan, that the pagan rituals around the time of Christmas were actually reactionary attempts to revive paganism. But regardless I agree with your final premise-let us take every opportunity to glorify God and thank him for what he has done for us. The love shown to us in the incarnation is why I celebrate Christmas.

It can also be argued that theres no unified agreement on the origin(s) of Christmas, and where they come from. Because this isn't the only one I've heard. I believe that, like he said, the reason behind the celebration, not the festive atmosphere alone should be the main focal point. That the miracle of Our God made flesh to save all flesh from worthy damnation should be the first priority when we talk Christmas. Joy to the world. God has walked amongst us. And because of it we can now become one with God again, without interference, in so far as we believe he is, and loves us still. Amen.

I don't think day is as important as the spirit of Jesus' gift to the world of salvation. There will likely always be those who try for one reason or other to take the joy out of Christmas with saying it's wrong to celebrate it since it's origins came out of Paganism. If it's true that that's the origin of Christmas I believe God can turn something evil or wrong into something good and holy. The problem I have with Christmas is how it's been commercialized and how many only celebrate it out of tradition and forget the real reason for it, Jesus Christ the savior. God bless and Merry Christmas.

Even some Christians participate in this belief. My question is always: Alright then, if you think it's pagan and don't want to celebrate it, then when are you celebrating the birth of Our Savior? This whole pagan narrative seems to be just another pathetic attempt by the enemy to erode our Faith and Celebration. Don't fall for it! Celebrate Christmas as the Birth of Our Savior!

My response to your question is "Where are we commanded to celebrate His birth?" We're commanded to take communion, but I don't recall any commands in either the OT or NT to celebrate anyone's birth. If we are going to celebrate His birth why do we bring in many of the trappings from pagan practices like the Yule log and various others? If this really was His birthday the world would not celebrate it along with us. Also God does not want us worshiping Him as others worship their gods. Based on what I've read the most likely time of Jesus' birth would have been during one of the Feasts of the Lord when the Jews would have made a trip to Jerusalem to offer sacrifices as prescribed by the Law. My guess is He would have been born during the Feast of Tabernacles/Booths, but that's my assumption from what I've studied. This would put his birth sometime between late September and late October depending on certain things occurring with the crops that year.

@@red58impala Where are we commanded to drive cars? Or cook steak? Or garden asparagus? Or live in air-conditioned houses? We never see Jesus or the apostles doing any of these things in the Bible, and yet we engage in them daily. We DON'T worship God in the same way the pagans worshipped their false gods. Christmas is not a part of the worship service in church. It's one of many very good traditions we have made to celebrate the birth of God the Son in human form, and the accomplishment of His plan of salvation for the chosen elect. If that isn't worth celebrating, than nothing else is.

In recent weeks there has been a lot of videos on KZbin refuting the notion that Christmas celebrations have any pagan roots. More than 30 years ago I came to the same conclusion as to its origin as you did and have not “celebrated” it since. I have no problem with setting aside a day to commemorate Jesus’ birthday, a day to worship and thank Him for coming, even though God did not command it and there is not even a hint that we should do it in the Bible. Jesus Himself celebrated Hanukkah, the Feast of Dedication, which was not instituted by God but was a way for the people to thank God and commemorate the dedication of the temple in Jerusalem. So, there is nothing wrong with commemorating Jesus’ birth and offering worship to God for it, even though there is no command to do it; it’s the how we celebrate that is the problem. If the traditions of Christmas originated in paganism we had no right to incorporate them into our Christian worship. Deuteronomy 12:3-4 makes it clear that God doesn’t want His people to incorporate anything pagan into their worship of Him.

Indeed! Just as we are never commanded to drive cars, or cook steak, or garden asparagus, or live in air-conditioned houses. Scripture outlines the guidelines and principles to live by, it doesn't list every single daily action we are to take, it's not a script to follow in that way.

I appreciate your attempt to explain why Christians celebrate Christmas on 12/25. And yes, there are many pagan aspects to the Christmas traditions. What you may not know is that 12/25 is the day proven to be when the Magi entered the home of Mary and Joseph and presented their gifts to Jesus... albeit 2 years and some months after His birth. The spices were then sold in order to procure the necessary funds to take Jesus, flee to Egypt and inso doing, preserve His life.

I had heard that the day of December 25th was selected because of an early belief that holy people were conceived and died on the same day. Jesus died during passover, therefore he would have been conceived in the Spring and born in December. I don't know if it is factual or not but it at least explains why it's on the 25th instead of the Winter solstice when the pagans had their holidays.

The Catholic Church claims that Jesus was conceived in the spring. He was most likely born in September/October. We are never commanded to celebrate his birthday but are told to remember Him in his death.

It is of pagan origin but co-opted by the catholic church and grew on Christians in America over a period of time. Shepherds were not in the field keeping watch over their flocks by night in the cold of December.

Christmas is one of those things that falls under the jurisdiction of Romans 14. If you dont want to celebrate it, that's perfectly fine. Nothin' wrong with that. (I would personally encourage you to, as its a wonderful and joyous celebration of Christ, but it isnt wrong to refuse to). But it IS wrong to try to tell the rest of us that we shouldn't celebrate it. Christmas and saturnalia are NOT the same holiday, and to make it out as if they are is incredibly fallacious. Christmas is a public acknowledgement, rememberance, and celebration of the coming of God the Son in human form, to accomplish the plan of His salvation for the chosen elect, and there is precisely nothing wrong with partaking in it. Glory to God in the highest!

I had left a comment earlier which seems to have disappeared. It's not always pleasant to weigh what the Bible says. There are some very hard truths. When we judge a topic like this we need to try to remove our feelings and get to what God desires of us. If 2 Timothy 3:16 is correct, 'All Scripture is breathed out by God...', then what James had to say has bearing on the subject. James 4:4 says that 'friendship with the world is hostility toward God'. He calls those who are friends to this world, adulteresses. If he were alive when the forming of this holiday was being discussed he probably would have told them that. We need to take serious what God's Word says about the traditions of men. It says they make God's Word ineffective. There is an example of what happens when we take up the ways of the world and put God's Name on it. It wasn't a pretty site but that is what the story about the golden calf was in the Old Testament. Now I am not God so I don't know what He thinks about this. All I know is that if He doesn't change and is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow then perhaps He isn't too pleased with it. We need to live as God pleasers and not man pleasers.

What is Sin? 1st John 3:4…..Sin is transgression of the law. What is the law? The law is the Torah. Co-opting a Pagan holiday and celebrating it doesn’t make it ok or biblical.

We see in the Bible why Christianity spread, and it was thanks to witnessing about Jesus (that he was the Son of God and the promissed Messiah, as proven by what he did and say, his resurrection, as well as why he died and what it means for those who choose to believe in him) and using every possible moment to do so. It wasn't celebrating Christmas, it was telling everyone the truth about Christ and his God, the Father, and their love for us. Christmas as celebrated in general today, rarely has anything to do with Christ. Even in "Christian" households. The focus is on parties, food, gifts and Santa. Also, I think it's important that we learn how God feels about celebrations rooted in paganism. Does he approve of them, or do we offend him by adopting pagan religious rites and calling them "Christian". There is an example of something similar in Exodus 32, where God's people chose for themself how they will worship him.

Scripture doesn’t endorse or support the practice of any man-made holidays or celebrations in a unified or prescriptive manner. Angels rejoice when a sinner comes to Christ. The shepherds rejoiced at the announcement of the birth of our savior. The magi came to worship Christ after his birth. Ritual celebrations organized by man under the premise of celebrating the birth of Christ incorporate many pagan traditions and customs which are an abomination to God. The manner in which we are instructed to worship and celebrate God is clearly indicated in scripture and yet the Christmas tradition persists within the denominations. The Easter celebration persists. None of these things are meaningful or appropriate for believers to partake in. Read your Bible and follow Christ and keep yourself unstained from the world. Ultimately everyone’s path is for them to walk individually. Read revelation. The letters to the churches is a good overview of the last 2000 years of church history. God bless you and keep you 🙏❤️💪

Neither does scripture endorse or support the practice of driving cars, or gardening asparagus, or living in air-conditioned houses, or typing on computers, and yet. Christmas is NOT pagan, saturnalia was. Christmas and saturnalia are NOT the same thing. This is a matter of Romans 14, plain and simple. If you don't want to participate in the celebration, that is your choice, nothing wrong or sinful with not celebrating it. Just as there is nothing wrong or sinful with choosing to celebrate it. Yes, some people celebrate it wrongly, some idolize it. The Israelites themselves idolized and misused the very ark of the covenant. Christmas is a matter of Romans 14.

When did Jesus and the Apostles celebrate His birthday? When were Moses' or Abraham's birthdays observed? Why celebrate birthdays in the first place? Why not celebrate the days that the Bible says to celebrate? And why not start with the Sabbath (the seventh day of the week)? -- which is the first of the Lord's (not Israel's) feasts listed in Leviticus 23, and is, afterall, one of the Ten Commandments. God made that day Holy. Who made Christmas, Easter, or any of the popularly-observed "Christian" holidays (with the exception of Pentecost) holy? Of course, there are whole books outside of the Bible that "justify" abrogating of God's appointed days and substituting man's appointed days. Why should we conform to those books instead of conforming to the books of the Bible? If I only had the Bible as my guide, I would know nothing of those man-appointed days.

Where did Jesus or the apostles drive cars? Or garden asparagus? Or live in air-conditioned houses? Or type on computers? There are all manner of things in daily life we do not found in the Bible that are not wrong. Christmas is not holy in that way, it is a matter of Romans 14, plain and simple. Choose to celebrate it, or don't. It's truly up to you. I however, grow tired of men demanding that we cease a public acknowledgement, remembrance, and celebration of God the Son being born in human form (an event the angels themselves celebrated, mind you) and the accomplishment of His plan of salvation for the chosen elect. No, it is NOT wrong to celebrate it. As it is simply a matter of Romans 14. May God bless us both.
