This captured a lot of my feelings about Eloise. I was excited about this season because I expected some real growth and development from her this season, but she was worse than in seasons 1 and 2. I thought her friendship with Cressida would help her see how she wasn’t a good friend to Penelope in the past, but El treated Cressida worse than she ever did Pen. Eloise always talks about how society treats women and said she was going to “change the world” but shows no empathy towards Cressida or Penelope’s situations. She was so proactive about her search for Whistledown, but didn’t even try to help Cressida when her “friend” was desperate about facing a lifetime with a creepy old man.

I would like to endorse everything said here. Eloise can be witty, clever and has talked about stuff we modern women value so we like her, but underneath she has minions (including Pen and Cressida) revolving around her and cannot take it when they stop doing so or ask for her help. She became Cressida's friend only when Cressida 'offered her kindness' when others didn't, but could not find it in her to be kind back, just mean and accusatory. The first time Cressida mentioned the awful marriage possibility she cracked a joke about 'German literature'. Read the room Eloise! Pen warned her about the Theo issue first in person, then when Eloise was only interested in what Lady Whistledown said she wrote it too, but Eloise is so incredibly unreceptive to any advice so she ignored that too. She loved all the gossip and devoured it ravenously, but then, when it was about her, she couldn't take it. And now she has ditched Theo too without a regret - she referred to him as 'that boy'. Very disrespectful to others but demands people respect her. I was pleased she began an apology to Penelope but has not followed through, instead is running to Scotland. I do hope in going to Scotland she will realise that the world doesn't revolve around her but is so much more complex. I'm not sure how she will find being 'in her own wing'. Maybe the mounted stags heads will listen to her opinions, they cannot walk away. Maybe Michaela will listen and shout back her own opinions. That would be great! Maybe Michaela will open her eyes to other things too.

I thought Eloise was gonna ask Pen to help Cressida and for her to continue to write but let Cressida be the face of Whistledown.

I agree 100%. I've loved Eloise this season for the most part, because she seemed to be broadening her perspective. But then she just dropped Cressida like hot potato! In Cressida's hour of desperation. It's like Eloise can only have one friend at a time, and since she was going back to Penelope, she had no more use for Cressida. To me though, it reads like sloppy writing to expose such a character flaw and then, for the rest of the season, act like we're supposed to sympathize with Eloise for having been deceived by a "viper". Cressida did absolutely nothing to Eloise to deserve that rejection--Eloise knew that Cressida treated other people poorly and befriended her anyway--that's on her, and Cressida WAS a loyal friend to Eloise. Cressida's "return to form" was also too drastic and sudden too. I think the two women needed another scene or two of disagreement for this story direction to ring true.

I don't think Eloise really understands the kind of emotional turmoil and limited options available to either Penelope or Cressida. I think that's part of why she reacts the way she does. I think it's all so far removed from her experience that she really can't wrap her head around it. She comes from such a secure, loving, supportive, wealthy, and powerful family that she has no concept of how hard, how dangerous, and how frightening these girls' lives have been at times. I also think there's a possibility that her feelings for both girls are complicated by the fact that she is not heterosexual and doesn't know how to deal with that either. I bet that, once she experienced having a friend who wasn't Penelope, she started to realize that she didn't just love Penelope as a friend. It may be like an inversion of what happened with Colin. Once he got physically involved with other women and compared that to how he felt when kissing Penelope, it helped clarify that he was in love with her and had been for quite a while. I think if we assume that Eloise had deeper feelings than friendship (maybe not sexual, but possibly romantic), then suddenly the wild anger and hurt she lashed out with in season 2 and the rebound relationship with Cressida to salve her broken heart make more sense. If her incredibly sexually active brother Colin doesn't have a handle on his sexuality and romantic needs yet when he's been on the town for years, then are we really surprised that Eloise doesn't at the ripe age of what, 19 or 20? With no sex ed at all? Nope, still giving the girl a little grace here. If she's ace or queer, etc., there are still people nowadays who are confused about how to navigate social situations and relationships from that lens (and we all at last know it exists - she doesn't). I am sure that I am preaching to the choir here, but that's been my take on the more extreme emotional reactions and even some of her inability to understand sex, romance, and tonnish social interactions. She may even fall somewhere on an ASD spectrum like her sister Francesca likely does. That sort of thing runs in families.

For someone who praises herself on being the smart one she certainly lacks empathy for those who are close to her. The minute something happens that puts in question her wit she gets mad but not because her friends lie or hide things rather because she didn't see what was happening sooner. It's a case of an ego being bruised. And to be clear, when she's not putting down other women, I really like her character. Claudia is a very talented actress which makes it difficult for me not to care about Eloise. I just hope as the show goes on they make some changes for her...

Listen can we talk about it?? Bc quiet as it's kept, Eloise was a bad friend to Cressida AND Penelope. It is not lost on me that Penelope and Cressida said the exact same thing to her, which is all she ever does is talk! She doesn't listen, she doesn't do anything, she just talks. How can both of your friends clock your tea like that and it not make you the least bit introspective? (thus far) I haven't read the books so I can only go off the show but the way she never really listens, just talks people's ears off is so rude. And I'm not talking about friendship dynamics where one is simply more talkative than the other, but the type of friend who will go on and on about what is going on in their lives without even asking you how you're doing as a simple greeting.

Eloise rubs me the wrong way sometimes too. She can be extremely judgmental

I like Eloise but a lot of the time she’s being incredibly flippant or sneering/mocking other women for being feminine while also trying to champion women’s rights and I want to be like - can you be sincere instead of joking for once and also just support other women? I was particularly annoyed at the moment in part one when she turns her nose up at embroidery stitching - like hey, maybe don’t mock other peoples hobbies just bc you find it “beneath you”. Her “not like other girls” shtick is getting increasingly annoying. For being such a loud and proud feminist she has times of being INCREDIBLY anti-feminist. It's like women's issues are only important if she's the one experiencing them, completely discounting the experiences of her friends. I don't mean to psychoanalyze but its giving Covert Narcissist.

so, Kemi love, I do have to disagree with you about Elois this once. I love your analysis and your view of characters, it's just that this once I must say I do not agree. All of my friends who watch the show know that Elois is hardly my favorite character lol. I think she is very self-centered, she is naïve and not in a charming way and unkind regularly. Her goofy character and "feminist" opinions are the reason many watchers adore her, which is fine, but I am unfortunately not one of them. I wasn't- until this very season.
