Fun fact, I was Technical Director for a Cape Breton theatre company. We did a production called Angus The Giant MacAskill which we toured around Cape Breton and schools in Nova Scotia in 1995. I built a set with some furniture to scale for our 5',7" actor playing Angus. I lite him with footlights to cast upward shadows to add the illusion of height. Although at his height this would have been the reality as all homes would have been lite with oil lamps during his life. We had an 8'x16'x2' collapsible stage with backdrop that I could fit in the back of my beat up '81 F150 and it didn't go over the sides of the box. Yes I'm proud of that as it was a great accomplishment for me and our crew. We had a local musician provide an original soundtrack and it's was one of the best experiences of my life seeing people react to the production. I heard one kid at a school say to his friends, "I know how they make him look tall, stilts". Funny. Thanks for posting this, brings back some great memories.😊

One of my ancestors was Angus's Uncle and came across the Atlantic with him to Cape Breton. One story the family passed on had to do with his performance for Queen Victoria. Apparently she was so thrilled with his demonstration of strength she asked for something to remember him by. At which point he jumped in the air and came down hard on the stone floor with his boot heel leaving a permanent mark. My Mom and Dad visited the area where the MacAskills settled a few years back in Cape Breton and got to meet another cousin Kenny MacAskill who has an extensive archive on Angus.

Was anyone else down the lineage ever of such a large size? Edit I see now you must have answered a similar question but the comment isn't here anymore. It's just hard to imagine that someone could be that size without having the giantism disease. I'm not saying it's all a lie, because I wasn't there and I don't know, I'm just saying it's EXTREMELY abnormal for a person to get that big naturally especially if there's not a history of abnormality big people back down the tree. It's like Paul Wight (The Big Show/Giant) was saying. He said there was no history in his lineage of abnormally big people and he thought he was just blessed for having such a large body then he went to some Dr and this doctor found it was indeed acromegaly or giantism just like Andre the Giant and big Robert Wadlow. They just knew alot more about it when he came along and they were able to stop it before it affected him as adversely as Andre and Robert.

One of my good friends is 7'7" and his nickname is tree. He is a pretty strong dude, but his problem is that he cant gain weight. When I last saw him, he was on a "prescription weight gainer" and still only weighed 210 lbs. Imagine how I felt, weighing the same and being almost 2 ft shorter lol. Of course, I had muscle, he looked like skin stretched over bone, except he was tough. He had a lot of struggles because of his size. Clothes were hard to find.....a bed was even harder for him, he wasnt rich but the worst I think was the place he was renting when I met him. He had to walk with his head to the side because the ceiling was so low, he couldnt stand all the way up. He could bowl a perfect bowling game though (repeatedly, with right or left hand, even switching back and forth), and I dont know if you would ever meet someone who can chuck a bowling ball the way that he could. His arms were like cannons.

On my mother's side of the family, there is another character who made some notoriety for himself as a strong man. He was actually smaller than the average man of the time. He lived (I believe) from 1892 to 1975 in the River John area of Nova Scotia. There are many stories about him and his incredible feats of strength. He, apparently, didn't want fame and all of the bother that comes with it but he did put himself out there for a small stretch of time because he needed the money. As he got older his son stepped up as a strong man (although not as strong as his father) and he also traveled around doing demonstrations and such. So the original man's name is Chalmers Bigney, he was a cousin to my grandmother.

That said, nearly fifty years ago I went to a gear making factory to pick up a special ordered gear, while waiting a truck baked into the loading dock to pick up a barrel of parts, the lift truck was inoperative so this big fellow came over, picked up the barrel and placed it into the truck. I asked a worker what was inside the barrel and he said machined parts, and that it weighed over 500 lbs. He told me that the fellow who lifted it was as strong as a bull and I believed him. He may have had the potential to be the strongest man ever, but because he didn't specifically train for strength I personally don't think he was statically stronger than Brian Shaw et al. There's a difference between natural strength, even "farm strength" or "manual laborer strength" vs professional strongman or powerlifter strength. He may have been able to do some truly amazing things in grip or throwing events though.

Personally I don't doubt he was insanely strong. But an anchor of 1200Kg and a living horse I highly doubt. The weight of a horse, sure. But not a living one. Not unless the horse was shot full of tranquilizers. But I would say it is highly likely that he in his prime, before injury, could have totally demolished todays Deadlift record. As he actually had feats of strength for a job, it is highly likely that he actually trained quite a bit. Pictures of him supports that. His body posture was quite athletic. and his chest circumference were the biggest ever measured on a person that didn't suffer from obesity.

No doubt that he was strong. However, it's hard to imagine that anyone can be BOTH that naturally tall and naturally strong. I'm not saying it's impossible, but unlikely. Look at basketball players of the past and present. One that comes to mind is Shawn Bradley; at 7'6" he is one of the tallest players in NBA history. Bradley too, was naturally tall, thanks to a combination of normal genetic variations. It means that only 1 out of every 10 million (or roughly only 800 individuals on the ENTIRE PLANET) are taller than him, and of those 800 whom are naturally taller than Bradley (if any exist at all) probably only number in the single digits. However, looking at Brabley's physique, he is definitely athletic, but not physically built. Bigger people need to take in a lot more calories in order to function. Shawn Bradley is 275lbs. Angus MacAskill was 510lbs, I kind of have to believe that the fact that everyone always asking him to prove his strength, is kind of what attributed to him becoming so strong in the first place, wouldn't you? "Lift this." "Pull that." "Carry these." "Hold on to it for -." All of this manual labour type of work would help anyone gain muscle mass. Regardless, Angus' legacy lives on, and if there wasn't physical evidence of his existence (photographs and what not) you'd probably label him in the realm of John Henry and Goliath.

Angus MacAskill is an ancestor of my father. The Giant was born 120 years before Dad and years ago my father and his brothers used to tell some stories about him. The stories were entertaining, but I cannot imagine how a person could verify their authenticity. We used to have a small paperback book that had at least a dozen stories about the Giant. I have not seen it for years and have no idea who wrote or published it. There is only one of my uncles left and he isn't capable of helping now. I regret that I have let it go for too long and most of the information and stories are lost to the ages. I did enjoy the video. EDIT - Some recent activity in this thread got me thinking about that little book I mentioned a year ago. Maybe my vitamins have made it to all of the necessary places for me to recall the name of the author heh, heh. Anyway, I am quite sure that gentleman's name was Roland Sherwood. If my memory serves he has written an impressive catalog of similar paperback books, a few of which I have read and I think they're great. There's a lot of information, maybe some legends, photos if they exist, and they are a quick, entertaining read. Also, I am inclined to believe that at least some, if not all, of Sherwood's books were self-published.

He wasn't just exceptionally tall he was broad with it. 44" or 3'8" across the shoulders is huge, as were his hands. He was also a lot heavier than other very tall men without being overweight. Just all round big. If you compare him to Brian Shaw he's a LOT bigger across the chest, as well as much taller. This suggests a fairly stocky build, which usually translates to power. Angus walked up to his boat, tipped it up on its side, letting the water drain, and then launched the boat by himself. And no, it wasn't a little dory. Another time, in a bar at the warves in Boston, a group of American sailors were hassling some Canadians. Angus walked in and when the Canadians told him about it, he walked over to the bar, reached over and picked up a full barrel of whiskey, popped the plug, took a big swig and then offered it to the Americans saying, "Anyone want a drink?" I think nobody has ever heard of Mills Darden, (October 7, 1799 - January 23, 1857[1]) was an American who became famous as one of the largest men ever in human history. He was capable of tossing 500-pound (230 kg) piles of hay with ease and single-handedly carried 12 feed sacks (1200 pounds) over 1.2 miles. His enormous size both in terms of his body weight and height made him one of the biggest humans to have ever lived. He was officially confirmed to have stood at a height of 7 ft 6 in (229 cm) tall[2] and weighed around 860 to 1,020 lb (390 to 460 kg), and possibly even more.[3] His recorded approximate weight of 1,020 lb (460 kg)[3] would have given him a body mass index of 88.2. If the reported figures are correct, Darden was 30 percent taller than and about six times as heavy as the average American male of the 21st century.

According to the measurement of his original jacket, the shoulder width from Angus Macaskill was less than 69 cm. Many old figures are grossly exaggerated.

This is incredible... I've heard stories about my Great Grandpa Lawrence which was born in 1913 and died in 1985 I've heard stories from the family that he picked up 500 pounds of feed and carried it a quarter of a mile and then climbed flag poles backwards

What many people seem to forget is that manual labor makes you strong. There's people half my size as strong as me even though I'm top 80% at any weight class, in a commercial gym, ofc. No powerlifting gym..

Great video. Interesting subject matter. I have always been fascinated by this story. Great narration. However, please practice your vowels and word-endings. One word seems to slide into the next which makes some of your speech hard to follow. Don't lose the accent though. I'm Brixton born and bred, so keep that southern drawl (LOL) I love it.

If Angus lived up to 100 years, it would be very awesome. I would called him the world tallest man who lived longest life. But strongest too💪💪
