Spain produced three world-class painters: Velasquez, who was much studied by the impressionists for his painiting of faces: Goya for his extraordinary paintings, his 'Capricios' and 'Desastros de la Guerra' pre-dated Expressionism and Surrealism. And of course Picasso, whose earliest paintings are amazingly fine and vivid. He seems to have got bored with ordinary painting and made his later works influenced by German artists like Georg Grosz!

Queen Carlota Joaquina, the wife of the Portuguese King John VI, was the daughter of these monarchs and the resemblance between daughter and parents is remarkable.

Goya clearly did paint what he saw. My goodness, the close likeness of Charles 4th to modern day King Juan Carlos is amazing.

By all accounts the portrait was, if anything, fairly kind. The Spanish royal family really were an unphotogenic bunch.

Infanta Maria Josefa Of Spain has a large melanoma on her temple that was probably related to her cause of death.

It's very possible, I even read she might had suffered from Lupus, which is known to cause scarring, but who knows? I'm sure too that her death and the scar on her temple are connected somehow.🤷♀Does anyone know more? :)
