65000 years ago, ancient man got to Australia because it wasn't as much "ocean" but much smaller straights and land bridges between islands on account more water was locked up in glaciers in nothern and southern glaciation. The water levels were MUCH lower and it wasn't hundreds of feet deep. Smaller boats/canoes could be utilized to get from one area to another.
