I think people exaggerated Jax's behavior in this episode. It's not like he suddenly became something he's not. He has always been an asshole.

He does have one moment of saving Kinger and the ribbon guy in episode 1 from basically guaranteedly being kaufmo'd. Which is consistent with him in this episode briefly looking sad over Kaufmo's funeral.

I am getting flashbacks to the RWBY fandoms absurd obsession with Adam Taurus the racist, murderous, terrorist who was introduced as such, never once showed any signs that he was anything more than that, and yet still plenty of fans decided he was secretly a super cool anti hero and that the writers ruined him by having the audacity of maintaining a consistent fully villainous character arc for him. It's a curse of character design, if you make a neat looking character and then let the fans stew on not much information for too long then they are gonna theory craft and fan fiction their way into hating whatever winds up actually being canon if it proves their ideas wrong.

You’re not alone in the “there’s nothing wrong with it, it just don’t click for me” train. This has happened to me SOOOO many times, I swear. Sometimes I get into a series or cartoon that is very well written, but I can’t really connect with it in the way it’s expected and it feels like I’m just nodding along as the plot goes. And honestly, that’s normal, it just means that it isn’t something that you’re vibing with currently. Sometimes it’s personal preference, other times it’s because of personal stuff going on in your life, it happens and it is okay. You’re not obligated to like something just because other people do. I feel like the way Jax acted in this episode was fine. Honestly, he was the one making things happen. Jax is always the one causing trouble or some sort of problem. If that’s not happening, there would be nothing interesting for the episode to happen. For example, he’s the one who threw Pomni out of the truck, causing her to end up under the map eventually. And it’s not like he outright hates the other members. He just knows how to take advantage of anyone he sees, like how he was going to use the Fudge to take down the tanker by offering it access into the kingdom(if the tanker hadn’t fallen out of the sky right next to them) Jax just…happens to *always* be with the other main characters, so of course he would bully them the most.

Even in this episode he stated that the NPC will AI will be 57 times more immersive THIS TIME. He is still learning comedic timing. Him spouting jokes like this is meant to add to that feeling of mental instability. The fact that your life is in the hands of something so unknowingly cruel, but trying to be goofy, is definitely something that would make most people terrified. I agree with you on the front about the existential stuff not QUITE hitting the way it’s supposed to on account of genre savviness. Like, as soon as Gumigoo found the out of bounds, I immediately knew where his story was going to go, including Caine deleting him That said, I do not think it was bad. As you said, the scene was incredibly well directed and the voice acting was on point. What felt like a bit of a (dare I say) paint-by-numbers “the AI/NPC character realises their life is a lie” scene, they executed on the delivery extremely well I am also aware that my feelings towards the scene and Gumigoo’s eventual destruction are heavily shaded by the fact that I am used to these tropes. In fact, I have consistently hyperfixated on media that deal with these concepts for about a decade now, whether it be a main focus (Undertale, HLVRAI) or in the thematic ballpark (Portal 1+2, Homestuck, Red vs Blue) I will say though, this is episode 2. I don’t expect Digital Circus to be pulling on the bangers right out of the gate. What I hope for, is that these scenes (Pomni’s horror in Ep 1 and Gumigoo’s revelation in Ep 2) is they act as stepping stones/set-up for more unique and developed concepts down the line This show has the potential to go into some heart-wrenching, mind-breaking shit down the road and I am all here for it

You know, this topic of genre savviness reminds me of SOMA. Long story short, SOMA is a horror game about consciousness, replication, robots and experiences. Some people have made whole muli-hour long videos or paragraphical comments on how amazing SOMA is, how it really made them think or changed their life with thought provoking questions that hit them at their core. Others though, feel that SOMA doesn’t say anything new and that it’s not even that deep. That other things have done far more and delved far deeper (without needing an absolute idiot protagonist, for instance). To them, SOMA’s about as deep as Michal Bay’s Transformers, and about as popular too. Neither side is necessarily “wrong”, but there’s something to be said about awareness, letting one enjoy things, and probably something about how much content we get/have nowadays.

I also had the same problem with the existentialism where I just didn't Click with Gummigu's revelation that he's an npc and even in the pilot where Pomni has the realization that she's not able to go back to the real world and she's stuck as a digital clown, but I also don't get why I wasn't feeling anything during these moments. I wonder if it's because we never really know who Pomni is before she arrives to the digital circus? So our introduction to her is already her as she is now and there's no real sense that she's really lost anything. I think she even mentioned that she doesn't really remember her own life before (though, I could be wrong about this, I haven't gone back to check...), so we don't even know what motivated her to "log in" to the digital circus. Though, this might contradict how she said she remembers how even people in the real world feel like they're nothing, so... I guess for Gummigu, it would be the fact that we don't really see his reaction to learning he's an npc? As in, we see his reaction to piecing the dots, but I think the episode kind of skips over how he reacts to Pomni confirming that he's not "real" and all we see next is him just sitting there. He's kind of already at the depression-acceptance stage of his grief/existential crisis. Maybe I would've felt more sympathy with him if we got to see him struggling to really accept that this is what he is. Or even when he first sees the models of himself and his crew, maybe it would've helped if he tried to wake them up or talk to them instead of somewhat immediately realizing the implications of seeing the models. I don't know, I guess what I'm saying is that the emotions for the scene-- despite how tense it was with the silence-- just felt really muted for how big the revelation was. Though, maybe this can also apply to Pomni...? I can kind of see how the series wants to portray these moments of existential dread, but when everyone keeps on having suppressed emotions and just kind of revealing how they're breaking down in brief bursts (ie Pomni at the end of the pilot), it kind of feels like they're not really letting these characters (or at least the ones who are new to this situation) actually React to it. If that makes sense. But I'm also not sure if this is what is exactly why I didn't connect with the existentialism. This is just the best I can think is the reason.

Something about how instead of seeing them as people struggling in situations I see them as characters going though premade arcs and tropes. I've chosen not to watch DC because I know it won't click, I think it's because I've had to deal with existential questions and have (mostly) come out the other side, so seeing characters struggle with questions I already have answers to makes me disconnect with their struggle rather that sympathize with them. (Maybe it stems from a 'been there, done that', still fighting that battle) I suspect you're having a similar problem given how you talk about what 'makes life worth living' Anyways you don't deserve hate over not clicking with something (but you already know that) and I look forward to your next review

Here's a question...what if Caine THINKS he's an AI because he's been in the circus for so long? He kind of hints at this possibility when he says that bad things may happen if he loses track of who is human and who is not.
@DrawciaGleam0228 күн бұрын
For an AI, Caine acts like a quirky Disney princess...... (only saying princess due to his role in the circus)
@CollinMcLean27 күн бұрын
I've got a couple of theories... One of them is Caine is an AI who's undergone rampancy like in Marathon or Halo. He may have been created to produce code and change the game in real time but it had the negative effect that Caine was quickly able to realize he was an AI. This might be why he doesn't want the NPCs interacting with the players. If the NPCs show the ability to be aware of their setting and circumstances they may also have the ability to go through rampancy. So Caine may want to keep them separate because he's terrified of the Circus having more than one rampant AI because then they'll start seeing themselves as human. The other is that Caine may indeed be a trapped human. Specifically he's one of the original game developers. C&A = Caine and Abel

I'm also finding myself check out at the more serious moments and I can't put my finger on why. Saw a video that talked about drama vs melodrama where it was basically drama happens because the characters actions and who they are so therefore you can relate and can understand how they are feeling since you understand them at some deeper level, where as in melodrama is more superficial and something that anybody could go through like example sheriff guy's wife got uppercutted to the moon or his partner got styled on at work 1 week before retirement that sort of stuff, so you feel more disconnected, in the first episode you don't know who pomni is or why she is there so she as character is only her context she is trapped and she doesn't want to be, kinda the same thing with npc, melodrama also hits harder when you the characters at a deeper level, like when the mc's mentor dies or the side character who was always by their side also dies or gets crippled or something

I think the issue you have with DC might be based in the fact that analyzing shows has become your job, so instead of being in the brain mode where you can relate to the show you instead are in the mode where you can only appreaciate the execution of the show or what it's trying to do. I take story telling and animation classes and I have the same problems with DC, I just also have it with other shows.

Asking me to care about existential dread is a hard sell. I don't claim to be well adjusted, but I've long since accepted that most of our life is out of our control, there is no point beyond what we make of it, and the we die. So when I see artists go to great lengths to accurately and even beautifully portray that dread through a character's experience... well, it has no impact on me, besides feeling sorry for them. Sympathy, but no empathy, for this particular topic.

The one aspect I'm looking forward to is the looming differences of Jax and Pomni. Jax feels like he's going to be the gung-ho "Pro-Circus" leader, given the sheer freedom he thinks it gives him. He's going to be the biggest denier of leaving, and it's hopefully an interesting character moment from him if a true exit shows up. Pomni, on the other hand, is going to be the de-facto "Anti-Circus" character, given that she acts directly opposite to the status-quo in many ways. You can even tell by her design, given the fact she is dressed as a Jester, which was historically used to mock and critique those in charge with impunity. I can't wait to see how this all pans out over the season, or the show overall.

I'm someone who has way too many mental issues, but a lot of them kinda tie into the show. A lot of the others in my head wrestle with existential fears of not being real, the world not being real, their body not being theirs, not relating at all to a name that isn't theirs, or just that their memories aren't real and often struggle to adapt to reality and the horrors that come with sharing a body with 13 other people who sometimes some of them aren't the nicest to each other. It's a situation that all of us are in together and while each might have slightly different base situations- it's all essentially just the same thing, and nomatter what, We're in it together. These are the vibes that I feel from it and is what makes it click so well and gives us high hopes for it.

There’s nothing wrong with sharing those opinions either, and no piece of media will ever feel perfect to everyone, there will always be elements that just don’t land. I think TADC is very cool, and can’t really vibe with stuff like Hazbin, but it’s really interesting to hear what people who are passionate about it have to praise or critique. It’s perfectly fine to just… not like something.

I wouldn't say the jokes drag...but then again I'm probably just thinking about how bad family guy drags it's jokes so everything else doesn't drag in comparison.

I hope that gangle gets more screen time because their whole ‘masking tragedy with comedy’ gimmick hasn’t been explored at all thus far. I instantly found the idea of their character the most interesting out of the group so it’s annoying to me that the writers don’t show off that duality. Also, more Zooble. I wish that Caine made them go along or something cuz there could be a lot of funny gags that come with them not wanting to be there.

I hate being that person but Gangle is a she

Here's a nice fun fact though; episode 3 will be the Zooble episode. Confirmed by Gooseworx in GlitchX

I sympathize with you. Sometimes a piece of art doesn't connect to you and you can't fully explain why. It can be frustrating.

I like the really pixilated Dragon Prince scenes

I think the pacing is similar to murder drones. I love murder drones and I’m enjoying digital circus, but the pacing is LIGHTNING SPEED. Like blink and you miss important character beats and lore information. I think if you’re going to have a short show with a huge sprawling story, this works, but it can be hard to keep up.

The pace of this show is nothing compared to Helluva Boss and Hazbing Hotel. I wish those shows slowed their speed to TADC's speed.

IDK, in my opinion TADC has better pacing than Murder Drones (as much as I like that show too).

That's interesting because my problem with TADC is that the pacing is too slow. Like the moments just draag and I find myself wishing the characters would talk faster so it can get to the next part.

Honestly, the fact that gummigo immediantly went from, there are statues of me and everyone else, to I'm not real kinda took me out. It sorta feels like the leap in logic was more convinent that something that made sense. I was realed back in by "can't remember my mom" tho

Fans after ep. 2: Why is Jax such a heartless monster?! Fans after ep. 1: I love Jax! He’s such a heartless monster :D

My original problem with the circus was honestly that it diden't went as far as it could, problem that episode 2 mostly fixed to me, i still have a few issues that i will NOT get in detail because i don't want to get stabbed

im still not into the show that much. it’s a little awkward at times plus i just can’t feel emotional towards any of them, and im not sure how the story is still gonna go but it’s only been 2 eps so not gonna rip on it too hard yet
@mydogghost27 күн бұрын
That’s not the shows fault that’s a you thing. So unless you actually have an argument to the writing you ripping on it would just be a giant you thing.

The fandom splitting about Jax, the emphasis on psychological horror to make their point clear and making great character moments. What more could you want? Nice to see you’re giving it a chance. You won’t regret it friend. 😊

I love how the fandom decided that Jax was so much of an asshole that he must be an NPC and not just ur average teen boy playing a video game
