In my opinion, the Origin is for Marshall what the Tiny Terror was for Orange: A smaller, affordable tube amp that does a nice job of replicating classic tones, even if they're not dead ringers for vintage amps.

Maybe the 1watt one. The 50 is very loud, real Marshall. People who are mad are ones expecting it to be a recreation of an old plexi to the T. Its more like an in between sound of several old Marshall amps. I bet a good eq would get you whichever flavor of classic Marshall you want.

I own the Origin 20. You do have to have the footswitch plugged in to use the effects loop, so at least it's not broken. :) . It has a switching jack in there. There was talk (on the forums when it was released) of getting a jack plug and connecting the contacts correctly so you can plug it in and leave it to do whatever your Freidman switch did. When my warranty runs out I'll be modding it so the loop switches on with the send/return (as well as Plexifying the preamp with a switch to go between stock and mod). For the early Marshall sound it's awesome. It's not a high gain amp for metal, but there are lots of pedals to make it do that in addition to the sweet vintage sounds it has in bucketloads.

Out of curiosity, isn’t the footswitch cable trs? Or a cable with three little black things? And could you, hypothetically, just plug a trs plug into the input of the footswitch and have it working, or is the footswitch part somehow integral for the loop to work? As in, can you cut up an old foot switch cable and just plug a little bit of the cable into the jack or do you need the switches aswell?

I have the Origin 20 and keep a 1/8" to 1/4" stereo adapter for headphones or whatever in the footswitch jack. Keeps the loop engaged for reverb and the boost on all the time without having the boost knob pulled out waiting for my clumsy self to hit it and snap it off. Nice and low profile too instead of having a footswitch hanging out of the back of the amp that never gets touched.

Ftswifch issue is recognized indeed. I have worked out a fix for it. (Installed an on off switch on the back of the amp) It's just a matter of the ground for the loop has to be lifted by something inserted in the ftswitch socket. I have diagrams on The Marshall Forum, we now have a schematic out there for these amps. I have installed a PPIMV on mine, the loop switch, and I tried a gain mod (fyi, Friedman is now doing a gain mod to the Origin series) But I didn't care for it, took it back out, will go back to the drawing board with that.... For now, I'm just running a line 6 desktop modeller, with an 800 sim, into the loop. I can flick the switch for it, or leave it on and turn down the gain. ;-)

Koss didn't start getting into Strats until Highway (1971) was recorded and released, but he is by far better known for being primarily a Les Paul guy due to his many '58-'59 sunburst Les Pauls, which he played the vast majority of the time (he owned at least four of them throughout his life).

It is a much brighter sounding amp as well, absolutely shreds lead tones. All it needs is a distortion into a wah with maybe a bit of reverb added.
@Baghdadbatterymusic2 жыл бұрын
I absolutely love my Origin, however it's definitely a peculiar amp. Some of the controls don't really respond in the way you'd expect if you are used to other vintage style tube amps like fenders and even other marshalls. From my experience if the master isn't almost fully up, it's going to sound pretty lifeless. The EQ is a bit strange too. I find I can't use the bass knob at all because it just adds flubby low end which kills the amazing clarity this amp has. The boost gives me all the low end I need and it's much tighter than the actual bass knob. You have tons of top end control with the tilt, mid (the mid knob actually adds gain as well), treble, and presence knobs. That's probably the most difficult part of dialing in the tone, because those controls have a ton of range and react with each other. What gives me the best results is to run the master nearly cranked, gain somewhere past 1pm, and then use a drive pedal through the fx loop as both an od and an attenuator. I find running pedals into the front of the amp much more difficult to get usable sounds. from the od pedal I control the drive and volume of the whole amp. Since you really have to be pushing the amp to get the best sound, the drive in the fx loop essentially becomes part of the preamp signal (which on this amp is controlled by the gain knob). The drive pedal lets you bring the volume down to bedroom levels without getting the major tone and gain suck of turning down the master and gain on the amp. Just be careful doing this, most drive pedals can boost volume quite a bit, and running it in the fx loop means the pedal signal is getting amplified by the output tubes. The output tubes weren't meant to handle much more than the amp's preamp signal, so you don't want to make that signal too much louder because you'll just blow your output tubes. I'd imagine that using the pedal to attenuate the signal, however, would probably increase the longevity of the internal components.

I have a Marshall Origin 50 combo amp. As much as I love it, there are 2 setbacks. The first is that you need, as Robert pointed out, the pedal to enable the effects loop. When that's enabled, the boost knob does not do anything! The second thing is that it's not the best pedal platform for overdrive pedals. Just my thoughts, but running it as is sounds pretty darn good for the price.

Love your videos, Robert. I'm running the Origin 50 into a 1960 4x12 and saving up for a Captor X so I can crank that master volume. Without that you just can't get that tone you're getting right there. Even on the lowest wattage setting I can only get the master to 2 before it blows my head off and it just doesn't sound good, kinda muddy and not even close to the gain you're getting. I gave up on it after I first got it and just used it as a pedal platform (which it's great at) and after a few months I decided to experiment with hitting the front end to push it into overdrive. When I first got it I went with my go to which is a Boss SD-1 but I really wanted to be able to roll back the guitar's volume to get a nice clean, then open up for tear your head off, which is what I've been after for a long time. The SD-1 is great at getting it into overdrive (tear your head off) but it sucked as far as cleaning up, the SD-1 just wouldn't clean up enough for a usable clean tone. Fast forward several months and I decided to experiment and holy shit, using the Paisley side of my Wampler Dual Fusion set as a boost with drive all the way down and the volume at 3 o'clock (almost wide open) and then into an eq pedal with just the gain boosted for an extra push and voila! Very early VH sounding result and cleans up pristine! I still need that Captor X so I can get that master cranked but to anyone in my shoes try boosting it with different drives and see what happens. Oh and use a volume pedal before it hits your fx return so you can tame that volume cause she's a loud one! Cheers!

I finally nailed it and I'll tell ya how but first the volume issue. So I ended up getting a Two Notes Captor thinking I'd be able to crank it on 50 watts and be fine. Wrong! haha Yeah the -20db helps but on 50 watts I can still only get the master at two for maximum living room volume haha. This thing is LOUD! Any louder and It wouldn't work but it barely squeaks by. I'm not in a band atm but when and if I join another band, this beast will have no problems being heard. Now to my trick... So for my main sound I'm running into the Euphoria side of my Wampler Dual Fusion with the gain pretty low at 9:30ish and the volume at noon, then into a Fender Engager boost with the volume at 100%, then hitting the Marshall which also has its' gain at 100%. That right there can give me sparkling beautiful clean to AC/DC & Van Halen rhythm tones and when I need just a hair more for lead I engage the built-in boost on the Marshall. Truth is, I usually leave the boost on because it STILL cleans up to a sparkling clean with the guitars volume, just gotta turn it down a little bit more is all. I also have a coil tap on my guitar so if I want a really sparkly single coil tone it's all in there. Oh and my last trick is I run a Morley Bad Horsie with about 15db outta 20db set on its boost for when I need total sustain on any given note, a la a Dimebag harmonic squeal that I want to never end for example. Need to use the wah clean for like a Voodoo Chile intro? Just turn the boost off on the Morley and you're all set. Oh and for the metal I run a Revv G3 going into a Deci-Mate noise suppressor into a Boss EQ200 for all out devastation. Huge pedalboard with the Boss ES8 switcher controlling everything. Hope this helps!

I have the origin 20C, and I didn’t like it initially. Then I put a celestion gold 10” in there, and now I love it. You are definitely right about people knocking it because they don’t understand why it doesn’t have much gain. I was aware of that when I got it, and that is something I really like about it. Perfect amp for pedals. Anyways, great vid! Get better!

You should buy and build a 5F1 Champ or 5E3 Deluxe amp kit. No joke, it’s the best way to learn about old amps. My first build was a 5F6A Bassman and it was pretty easy. I got a reissue amp real cheap on Craigslist, gutted it and put a Mojotone small parts kit in it. Warning about amp kits though (besides the risk of electrocution), it’ll ruin every amp with a PCB in it for you. You can build better amps for less money than a DSL40C or Hot Rod Deluxe. You can even put together something that’ll rival Friedman eventually.

Ive always wondered about those amp kits
@matthewf19794 жыл бұрын
Wesley alan You can’t beat them for the money. Mojotone.com has all kinds of kits. From tweed, brown and black to blues breakers and 800’s. You’d have to buy boutique or custom shop to match the quality of the end product(if you build it right).

I have both the Origin 20H and the DSL 20H, and they are definitely voiced differently. I always run an Analog Man modded Tube Screamer TS9 in front of the Origin. That gives it the extra gain I want. That said, I do find myself preferring (& playing) the DSL more often. Having both is definitely nice though.

I have the Origin 20 head and the foot switch has a boost switch and the FX loop on and off switch on it so yeah I would think you need something plugged in to activate the FX loop. I love the Origin amp they sound great and for the price are fantastic value. Folks need to understand that old Marshalls didn't have lots of gain and these are based on the Original Marshals, clue is in the name "Origin" as in Original lol

Oh Robert, the origin 50 that I got it came with a foodswitch. It can turn on the gain boost and the fx-loop. Hope you didn't threw it away with the package:0!

Hi allí i bought the origin 20 with a peavy box. Grate grate sound Marshall Zeppelin sound. To crank at ,0 5 watts the room walls felt down. Is not an AMP to play daily. To crank un a reasonable loud sound you lo need a pedal overdrive. I not know de 50 origins with his máster volumen. However the sound and tone is amazing

Hey Robert, I would just like to ask how you're running your 800, I'm thinking about getting a jmp master volume, and I know that internally, they are practically the same amp, so I'd just like to know your thoughts on the volume, and if it would be nessicary to run a power attenuator or not, keeping in mind, Id like to know how you get your tones from the 800, thanks in advance!
@miseryparty37263 жыл бұрын
no attenuator required. crank the mids and you're good.

The question I have is, "Will it Yngwie?" If you put an overdrive pedal in the front, can it do that classic Neo-classical shred tone like the Plexi?

Killer video. Convinced me pull the trigger on the 50H .what 2x12 can would you suggest ? Without busting the bank.?
@Ace8Three4 жыл бұрын
I have Origin 20H and it is fantastic amp for using pedals! Yeah Origin is based on Marshall amps before plexis so very little gain. But you have to boost master volume and use little gain + distortion pedal and it can really do all. If you are guitar + amp guy, my advice is to try some dirtier amp.

My blackstar is like that in a way. I wanted to play my axe fx through the fx loop (just using the power amp section) with the guitar hooked up to the input of the axe fx but no sound came out when I had it hooked up right. I even took it with me to my local music store and found out u need to have a jack in the input even tho I was plugged into my axe fxs input. I plugged in a 1/4-1/8 adapter (nothing else) into the input of the blackstar and everything worked. Didn’t make much sense but similar experience
