Hey Robert! So i had a thought. Why do you think people put aftermarket pickups ( Seymour Duncan, Dimarzio, Bare Knuckle ect...) On a US made Gibson? Gibson invented the humbucker, so theoretically they should make them better than anyone right? Thoughts?

In my opinion, the Origin is for Marshall what the Tiny Terror was for Orange: A smaller, affordable tube amp that does a nice job of replicating classic tones, even if they're not dead ringers for vintage amps.

Maybe the 1watt one. The 50 is very loud, real Marshall. People who are mad are ones expecting it to be a recreation of an old plexi to the T. Its more like an in between sound of several old Marshall amps. I bet a good eq would get you whichever flavor of classic Marshall you want.

So glad man you revisited the amp! I think this series of Marshall really deserves the attention. I myself flirt with the idea to get this instead of my Randall Rd20 and a Friedman Be-OD, a JHS Little Black box and there goes a rig from Free to serious metal :D I think most of us tend to forgot how the classic sounds were done by the relative low gain old amps pushed to ten, juicing in a Dallas Rangemaster, and topping it with MXR Dist+ or a Ts, even old MXR Eq's... a road to the classic sounds as Maiden, Judas P. Scoprions etc. Of course there were a bunch of modded amps out there too, so IMHO the Origin is a canvass for a tonal painter, a base to discover and immerse in the pioneers of tone. A platform to experiment and tailor a sound rooted in the past and traditions.

I use the power amp section of the Origin 50h with a Carvin Legacy drive tube preamp pedal and it sounds great. The presence control on the Origin is active on the power amp end so you have to adjust it to taste. The origin sounds great on its own for clean and semi dirty stuff but with a tube preamp like the Legacy drive the possibilities are endless.

I found this was one of my favorite videos in a bit! Not boring at all; I love Marshall amps. My origin 50 with a boss ds2 makes my PRS sound like a hot rod. It is a much brighter sounding amp as well, absolutely shreds lead tones. All it needs is a distortion into a wah with maybe a bit of reverb added.

I have the Origin 50 watt as well. You do need to find the footswitch to turn the effects loop on/off. You can manually turn the boost on/off right on the head(by pulling out the gain knob) but you need the footswitch to control the loop. Nothing in footswitch jack=no effects loop.

I have the origin 20C, and I didn’t like it initially. Then I put a celestion gold 10” in there, and now I love it. As always, awesome video man! And you are getting some serious tone from that Origin 50! P90's on Les Paul really sound great to me! ;-) I have Origin 50H also and it does get me to that old school 60's and 70's rock ballpark! And also takes an overdrive pedal really well if you need more saturation. As any amp of this type, the real singing comes from cranking the power amp section so the louder you get it, the better it sounds! ;-)

I own the Origin 20. You do have to have the footswitch plugged in to use the effects loop, so at least it's not broken. :) . It has a switching jack in there. There was talk (on the forums when it was released) of getting a jack plug and connecting the contacts correctly so you can plug it in and leave it to do whatever your Freidman switch did. When my warranty runs out I'll be modding it so the loop switches on with the send/return (as well as Plexifying the preamp with a switch to go between stock and mod). For the early Marshall sound it's awesome. It's not a high gain amp for metal, but there are lots of pedals to make it do that in addition to the sweet vintage sounds it has in bucketloads.

Out of curiosity, isn’t the footswitch cable trs? Or a cable with three little black things? And could you, hypothetically, just plug a trs plug into the input of the footswitch and have it working, or is the footswitch part somehow integral for the loop to work? As in, can you cut up an old foot switch cable and just plug a little bit of the cable into the jack or do you need the switches aswell?

Ftswifch issue is recognized indeed. I have worked out a fix for it. (Installed an on off switch on the back of the amp) It's just a matter of the ground for the loop has to be lifted by something inserted in the ftswitch socket. I have diagrams on The Marshall Forum, we now have a schematic out there for these amps. I have installed a PPIMV on mine, the loop switch, and I tried a gain mod (fyi, Friedman is now doing a gain mod to the Origin series) But I didn't care for it, took it back out, will go back to the drawing board with that.... For now, I'm just running a line 6 desktop modeller, with an 800 sim, into the loop. I can flick the switch for it, or leave it on and turn down the gain. ;-)

The lick was from Mississippi Queen. And the origin manual does state the pedal needs to be terminated to the loop switch for the fx loop to work. U can just get a TRS jack (with no cable in it) and stuff it in there and leave it. Loop will always work then.

Love your videos, Robert. I'm running the Origin 50 into a 1960 4x12 and saving up for a Captor X so I can crank that master volume. Without that you just can't get that tone you're getting right there. Even on the lowest wattage setting I can only get the master to 2 before it blows my head off and it just doesn't sound good, kinda muddy and not even close to the gain you're getting. I gave up on it after I first got it and just used it as a pedal platform (which it's great at) and after a few months I decided to experiment with hitting the front end to push it into overdrive. When I first got it I went with my go to which is a Boss SD-1 but I really wanted to be able to roll back the guitar's volume to get a nice clean, then open up for tear your head off, which is what I've been after for a long time. The SD-1 is great at getting it into overdrive (tear your head off) but it sucked as far as cleaning up, the SD-1 just wouldn't clean up enough for a usable clean tone. Fast forward several months and I decided to experiment and holy shit, using the Paisley side of my Wampler Dual Fusion set as a boost with drive all the way down and the volume at 3 o'clock (almost wide open) and then into an eq pedal with just the gain boosted for an extra push and voila! Very early VH sounding result and cleans up pristine! I still need that Captor X so I can get that master cranked but to anyone in my shoes try boosting it with different drives and see what happens. Oh and use a volume pedal before it hits your fx return so you can tame that volume cause she's a loud one! Cheers!

I know your comment is 8 months old, but i have the origin 20 into a 4x12, and it allows me to crank the master all the way up. Grant it, its loud, but id say its about as loud as i play with my band. Maybe you should just get the 20? Ive been debating getting the 50,but your comment makes me think I should just stay at the 20.Curious if you still have it and what ur thoughts are.
@Darkitectband
@Darkitectband 3 жыл бұрын
@@Boogieplex Yeah I not only still have it, but it's my main amp atm. Got a Peavey 6505 and 3120 for the metal stuff but I was always going for that sorta brown sound thing that would completely clean up rolling off the guitar's volume and then go full shred when all the way up. I finally nailed it and I'll tell ya how but first the volume issue. So I ended up getting a Two Notes Captor thinking I'd be able to crank it on 50 watts and be fine. Wrong! haha Yeah the -20db helps but on 50 watts I can still only get the master at two for maximum living room volume haha. This thing is LOUD! Any louder and It wouldn't work but it barely squeaks by. I'm not in a band atm but when and if I join another band, this beast will have no problems being heard. Now to my trick... So for my main sound I'm running into the Euphoria side of my Wampler Dual Fusion with the gain pretty low at 9:30ish and the volume at noon, then into a Fender Engager boost with the volume at 100%, then hitting the Marshall which also has its' gain at 100%. That right there can give me sparkling beautiful clean to AC/DC & Van Halen rhythm tones and when I need just a hair more for lead I engage the built-in boost on the Marshall. Truth is, I usually leave the boost on because it STILL cleans up to a sparkling clean with the guitars volume, just gotta turn it down a little bit more is all. I also have a coil tap on my guitar so if I want a really sparkly single coil tone it's all in there. Oh and my last trick is I run a Morley Bad Horsie with about 15db outta 20db set on its boost for when I need total sustain on any given note, a la a Dimebag harmonic squeal that I want to never end for example. Need to use the wah clean for like a Voodoo Chile intro? Just turn the boost off on the Morley and you're all set. Oh and for the metal I run a Revv G3 going into a Deci-Mate noise suppressor into a Boss EQ200 for all out devastation. Huge pedalboard with the Boss ES8 switcher controlling everything. Hope this helps!

Honestly this thing has all the gain I need. I crank the master and everything but the tilt and gain. I only use the gain knob at 1:00 max, get a sound similar to Robert's. It does have a bite that is different from my Super Lead or JTM50, the bite is characteristic to the Origin and is awesome with my Tele. My Super Lead is almost too much gain, this thing is just right. I just am really satisfied with it, a ton of great cleans as well.

I have the Origin 20 and keep a 1/8" to 1/4" stereo adapter for headphones or whatever in the footswitch jack. Keeps the loop engaged for reverb and the boost on all the time without having the boost knob pulled out waiting for my clumsy self to hit it and snap it off. Nice and low profile too instead of having a footswitch hanging out of the back of the amp that never gets touched.

I have the origin 20 and yes you have to have the foot switch plugged in for the effects loop to work. I thibknits just the way the relay is wired it needs that signal. Downside to having the switchable effects loop. I dont mind it too much though because I tend to use my foot switch for the boost, using a pedal for my overdrive.

Hey man thank you for the video, I hate to say this but I think I like the Origin better than the JCM800, but both amps are amazing !!!

The Origin pedal has a switch to turn the effect loop on and off. So you have to have the switch plugged in to use the effects loop.

I'm sure you could solder up a dongle for the jack socket, so you dont need to bring along a pedal you're not going to use.

You dont need the pedal plugged in to use the amp but the pedal turns the effects loop on and off and the default without the pedal is off.

Regarding the Free stuff, none of early Free was played on a Strat (first three records). All Right Now was recorded with Kossoff playing his stripped finish '59 Les Paul Standard, as was the entire Fire and Water record that song appears on. Koss didn't start getting into Strats until Highway (1971) was recorded and released, but he is by far better known for being primarily a Les Paul guy due to his many '58-'59 sunburst Les Pauls, which he played the vast majority of the time (he owned at least four of them throughout his life).

I love my Origin 50H. I don't think there's another value like that in the market. A 50-watt all-tube amp for $499 is a great deal.

I have a Marshall Origin 50 combo amp. As much as I love it, there are 2 setbacks. The first is that you need, as Robert pointed out, the pedal to enable the effects loop. When that's enabled, the boost knob does not do anything! The second thing is that it's not the best pedal platform for overdrive pedals. Just my thoughts, but running it as is sounds pretty darn good for the price.

I have the Origin 50H, definitely agree if you are a high gain metalhead this is not your amp, but for those of us that are classic/hard rock or blues rock players this is perfect, takes pedals great as well. I have always been a plug in and play guy not a lot of frills. Les Paul-> Tubescreamer->Marshall that's it.

I have the Origin 20 head and the foot switch has a boost switch and the FX loop on and off switch on it so yeah I would think you need something plugged in to activate the FX loop. I love the Origin amp they sound great and for the price are fantastic value. Folks need to understand that old Marshalls didn't have lots of gain and these are based on the Original Marshals, clue is in the name "Origin" as in Original lol

4:30 there’s a fun trick re: the reverb problem you might be able to plug a stereo cable into the foot switch jack and tape some little bit of metal between the tip and shaft or the ring and shaft on the other end. That’s kind of what the foot switch is doing too :) ymmv and you are on your own if you try it but hey ... it might work for you. Good luck
@jayjayripoff
@jayjayripoff 3 жыл бұрын
In this instance, you dont need the 'piece of metal', just a plain TRS plug will work. The trouble is the ring leg of the jack socket goes to ground with nothing plugged in, plug the jack in and it lifts the leg off ground, then the switch connects it to ground, or not. :-)
