HD are a breeze to wrench so if you ain't skeered take advantage of the glorious aftermarket and huge community then go for it. What you learn will be worth MUCH more than any one motorcycle! I've saved absurd money wrenching my own everything (not kidding, DIY is life) and recommend it highly. BTW that mileage is NOT "high" for that engine and HDs can EASILY be ridden for a lifetime. Here's a post I just wrote for another channel (I don't have one but contribute since I've wrenched multiple brands since 1978) which cover Evos but the gist will do for Twin Cams: After decades wrenching I perform a COLD compression test on any used bike I'm considering unless it starts sweetly and smoke-free from cold. I always ask sellers not to start bikes they say run. Testers are simple Bourdon tube gauges and easy to use, so practice on something (like your riding mower) or bring a bro drag it to an indy shop if really new and nervous. The fun thing about shop estimates is they can knock down the price because labor is high then you can DIY the work. At least view pics of spark plugs and have a plug wrench so you can inspect plugs. They give vital info about engines. I love and have sorted out many garage sitters for self and customers but I know what I'm doing and you can too. If you're a bit new to working on bikes fear not because Evos are easy. However all new mechanics (I've trained many techs) should know to "slow is smooth, smooth becomes fast" and to "when in doubt, copy professionals". BTW Shane Conley is a skilled motorcycle instructor whos videos I enjoy and I'm a picky grouch.Be ruthless about pricing. I scored a Sportster covered in rat shit with a fresh 96" S&S stroker kit for $1700. My pressure washer solved the turd problem and all it needed was a carb cleaning, rear master cylinder rebuild kit and starter. Wise owners replace ALL fluids including brake fluid which is cheaper than parts. Plastic turkey basters or big irrigation syringes empty master cylinders with minimal fuss. Anti-seize all bleed nipples so they don't seize and because it seals air leaks when they're cracked open for bleeding. My ironclad rule for non-runners is pull the carb then strip and soak it in undiluted Pine-Sol (which doesn't eat plastic and is excellent carb dip) and for Evos REPLACE the intake manifold seal rings without bothering to look because you have the carb off. (If you wrench you want a Ram Jett aftermarket solid intake, only available used, check Chop Cult for some "farmall" posts on those.) I rinse the fuel tank if its clean with fresh fuel. Every HD owner wrench or not should download or buy a hard copy of their machine FACTORY (not aftermarket) service manual and parts catalog (you can download those from the Harley Service Information Portal. This is worth a dummy Fecesbook account. Get every manual and parts book matching and NEAR your year for interchange info. You'll thank me later: facebook.com/groups/1465028990466294/ Chop Cult is general and a great source of chop info but has major Evo knowledge and while a small forum has some very good wrenches. Most of vtwinforum is boomers with baggers but the FXR forum is an Evo goldmine. Evo big twins interchange but the FXR community are the most dedicated so even if you ride a bagger (similar frame so learn how to improve the swingarm and bushings) or a Softy go there: www.v-twinforum.com/forums/harley-davidson-fxr.124/ www.xlforum.net/ is the one stop shopping mother load of Sportster info. Get the manuals via the Facebook link above but xlforum covers everything else and affiliated Sportsterpedia is excellent too. It's fork section also applies to narrowglide big twins.

I bought a $3,500 2002 Honda ST1100 Two years ago. The guy said it was serviced and ready to go. I have put 25,000 on it in two years. All I have done is changed the oil, and filters a couple sets of tires and a set of rear brake pads. It now has 56,000 miles and I would get on it right now and ride it anywhere! I had two FXR’s back in the 90’s great riding bikes but I had problems with both, both of them brand new. But at least back then Harley stood behind their products and fixed them even after the warranty was up. Looking at newer bikes but sadly won’t be looking at Harley’s. The new Buell is cool but I doubt I will be dropping $30,000 on a motorcycle. Especially now that I’m older and realize all the nice garage furniture being sold cheap with no miles lol

I have only had one bike and I bought a 72 sportster in 74 i paid $800 was in a box in pieces. The guy torn it apart going through a divorce and she wanted it so he tore it down to pieces, she didn't want it so I bought it. I have rode that bike to all 49 state, Canada and down to Mexico City. I've put 524,000 miles on the fame. My great grandson wanted to restore it so I gave it to him. But i used to be a 43 years in driving a truck over the road so im going to find me an old bike and run the roads. I'm 63 I'll throw a tent on the bike. But even through all your repairs its still cheaper than owning a 4 wheel vehicle. I did my own repairs. But if you want a more throatyer sound look into 50 Cal slip one from TAB Performance, my friend put them on his and they sound good and you can get them in chrome or black. Thanks for sharing

Thank you for an honest review of your high mileage Harley. Or is it really that high mileage when it comes to a well maintained and looked after Harley?. . When doing a six months trip Down Under I met an Aussie couple named Kay and Peter Forwood. They where on a round the world trip on they’re beloved Harley. I met them at a Horizons Unlimited meeting in Ulmarra NSW. I think the bike at the end of the trip had some 610.000 km on the clock. Another Weltenbumler couple - Carol and Ken Duval -also Aussies, when visiting my place in Norway a few years ago had just passed 900.000 km on they’re beloved BMW R80G/S Paris Dakar. Major maintainance - off course. Just like yourselfe. Keep up with maintaining whilst enjoying your ride and you will be fine. My 1985 R80 G/S PD have 329.000 km and are in excellent condition. If you Google the above names you will find them att Horizonunlimited, Facebook etc where they state mileage and condition of the bikes. Appologize for my sloppy writing as english language is not my mother tounge. Thank you again for your review. All the best and safe riding. Helge

I have a 2010 Ultra Classic. I bought my first Harley last year (15 years with a Honda Shadow only changing tires and oil) with 92K miles from the original owner. He did a lot of work around 82K, big bore (110) kit, Woods cams, ported heads, power duels headers, variable clutch and a bunch more. I have almost 97K now and had to replace the jugs and pistons and a fuel filter housing in the tank this past month. Is it breaking the bank, yes, do I still love this bike, hell yes. I know there is more I want/need to do soon. Tires and wheel bearings, front forks and probably motor mounts and brakes too. I just want to ride, simple. I am in Daytona, but dad lives in TN and I want to make that ride soon. My wallet is starting to ache.

So, looking back over the past 5 years I can honestley say Should have spent more going in. Hind sight you know! Not just about the money, it's also the down time. Overall I always loved the bike, but yes upon reflection LESS miles would have paid off in the long term. Now, my next video will be on the bike I just bought and traded in the Ultra. 2016 HD Switchback with (are you ready) 14,573 MILES. I'll have it in a couple of weeks which I will detail in my next video.

I am very satisifed the with the bike. It is my daily driver, unless it rains. I try to maintain her best I can. I will ride her until I die.

Harleys have their own distinct look and ride. I’ve had a couple of old Sportsters and a couple of Heritages and the Heritage I now have is a 93 Evo. I’ve never had any real heavy expense but they all were under 60,000 miles. I like motorcycles of all kinds but Harleys are distinctive in that they have a huge aftermarket support for all their bikes old or new. I tried out a Road King a few years ago which was a one owner bike with 106,000 on it. It was in excellent shape but the dealer just wanted too much money.

All motorcycles need repair if they sit for too long, ALL HIGH milage bikes need maintenance. Fork seals, maybe shocks, wheel bearings, tires, brake flush, if you find your stator failing, you need to replace the stator, & the regulator. If NOT guaranteed your regulator will go soon after the stator. I worked in svc at a HD dealership, & independent shops.

Sounds like a lot of stuff. What about the cam chain tensioners? And I wonder if the crank might be out of alignment with that many miles. And 80% compression is not good. I'm surprised it's not setting off the check engine light. As for the primary chain tensioner, it is normal for them to have grooves in them. They only wear to where the chain rollers contact the plate, then stop wearing. It's the edges of the chain side plates that make the grooves. I have actually spent more money on towing bills due to breakdowns than I did on repairs. I don't trust Twin Cams. Especially those made after 2002, when they did away with the Timken bearing crank. I also don't want EFI or ABS. I like motorcycles, not computercycles. I currently have a 1989 FXRS Low Rider, and it has been the most reliable bike I've ever owned. I bought it with 29K miles, it now has 83K miles, and has only been towed twice. And once was because of the stator. I've had many stators fail on many bikes. The whole concept of a stator is bad. Unlike an alternator, where the output is controlled by the load placed on it, a stator runs at full output all the time, and any excess current is literally shorted to ground by the R/R. Literally cave man technology. I'm trying to decide whether to have my engine rebuilt, or get an S&S engine. I'm leaning toward doing a rebuild, because S&S doesn't make an 80 inch motor.
@dixieland5343
@dixieland5343 Жыл бұрын
There was motor work donby harleye on the bike before I bought it. I had the dealer pull the rockers and discovered the cam pla te was upgraded and the tensioners were at 80 percent. I know alot of people go to an S&S motor but to me it's not Harley. Just my opinion. As for the Evo, BEST motor by Harley for reliabilty. Appreciate the comments very much! Safe riding!

And for me yes it's worth it. When I got it I put new plugs, plug wires, battery, tires, oil change and filter. The rest has been cosmetic. I will have a second bike down the road. I bought an 88K mile 1997 FLSTF that was in pretty nice shape, outwardly, for $5K....I bought it knowing it would probably need rebuilt ASAP. Had one cam lobe wiped and a lifter with a trashed and seized roller. Did a new topend, lifter blocks, lifters, cam, cam bearing and bushing, steel breather gear, oil pump, rocker arms, pushrods, pistons, rings, valves and valve job, rear tire, pads and rotors, 2 into 1 exhaust, throttle cables. Everything else checked good including crank. New ignition was free from my brother. Motor looked fantastic inside except for the cam and lifters. I only replaced the pump and lifter blocks because I was worried about wear from the metal shavings off the cam lobe. Did all the work myself so I trust it.. Will need a clutch in about 30K more miles minimum I'm thinking but it's running fantastic and very reliable and I've put 6K miles on it since March. Needs a speedo cuz the odometer doesn't display. I love the bike and I'm in it for just under 10K and it's ready to ride anywhere. No regrets at all. I probably couldn't sell it for $10K right now but $8800-$9500 would be the resale value locally for a bike this solid mechanically with receipts for everything. The value of the trust I have in it to ride it 1500 miles away, is priceless.

I've lost my love of Harleys. It started after I gave $19,000 for 2002 lowrider new. Two weeks later the stator went out and they were on back order. I bought the six year extended warranty, which came in handy. After I called Harley corporate, I got a stator 4 weeks later. Can you imagine being excited to get your bike and spending so much money and then being told they didn't know when they could fix it. Anything you might say that I could have done to get it fixed quicker I did. Basically Harley has built the same bike for 100 years and the dependability has not improved. They've made very mild improvements in performance but no where near as much as other manufacturers. Equivalent bikes are far more dependable, powerful, and better in every way. I still have that 2002 low rider and it has had several big issues. Cam chain tensioners at 38,000 miles. Wheel bearings at roughly 20,000 miles. Yes the stator just went out again at 45,000 miles and yes it was on back order so I bought an after market stator and put it on myself. Took me the better part of a day. My buddy has a 94 gold wing with over 150,000 miles on it and 130hp. It has had a leaky radiator hose.

Harleys are NOT about performance. If you want performance, get something else. To me Harleys are about the experience, the sound and feel. That's why I don't consider the M8 a Harley motor. It has no feel. I test rode a new Street Glide when the M8 first came out. I was seriously disappointed. They got rid of one of the main reasons why I like Harleys so much. They put a counterbalancer in it. I couldn't even tell if it was running at idle. I have owned a couple of Goldwings, and the reason I got rid of them was because they were literally drop dead boring. The M8 felt like a Goldwing, meaning it had no feel at all. H-D did build reliable motorcycles once. The ones with EVO engines. Not only are they stone reliable, but when they do wear out, you can rebuild them over and over without replacing expensive parts. Newer H-Ds (I refuse to call them Harleys, they don't fit my definition of a Harley) are basically disposable bikes.

I'd just like to be able to take off on my Heritage, and be as confident that I'd get back home as I was with the Wing. My 77 lowrider problems left me with a"what if" feeling that I just can't seem to shake, but I'll keep on shakin' as long as I can, though at 67, it probably won't be too long! Ride free bro. Seeya

I humbly disagree with you sir. Many Harleys have critical flaws that cause major damage. I had my new Harley 2 weeks before it broke down the first time. The stator went bad. The break in oil hadn't even been changed and I followed all recommendations for break in as I wanted to take good care of my bike. The cam chain tensioners, a major flaw in all twin cam 88's, went out before I got 30,000 on it. No matter how well I took care of the bike it didn't matter.

My first service on 1200 Sportster was 500, thinking of getting a better highway bike, but around town a fun bike.Odd that stator did not short a fuse.

@@dixieland5343 I looked at direct esp but they were very pushy tried to get an extended warranty through Harley at the end of my factory warranty but it went back 2 years. So I’d only get a year out of a 36 month extended warranty. That won’t do me any good

I’ve had many kinds of Harley..the truth is anything mechanical is going to have issues..if you maintain it and don’t ride like a moron…it should be relatively failure free. Some require more attention.. if you own newer models with fuel injection and computer controlled systems.. generally there’s more to go wrong…those old Evo engines can’t be beat though!

Hey thanks for that. I did look at a Roadking but no matter what I could do to it, it would never be HD Ultra ltd. We've paid our dues and now I plan to ride my Ultra into the sunset. I did look at a Low Rider about 5 years ago and ended up with a Harley Heritage Softail Classic before this one. As for the money I spent on other bikes, I did get to enjoy them so it was still worth it.

I'm a first-time viewer. Can I make a recommendation? Your video is 17:22 about a bike you bought with 17:19 of you talking and 00:03 of the bike. It would better serve your monolog and viewership that you reverse that. "Watching paint dry" for 17+ minutes is far more interesting than listening to someone describing paint drying for that length of time. 1) position subject at angle you want it to appear in frame. 2) position camera and ensure subject is in frame. 3) light the subject so paint and chrome shine without creating hot spots (glare) or deep shadows. 4) intro subject of discussion in frame 5) exit frame for discussion 6) re-enter frame for close of discussion and farewell address I hope this suggested format change helps for future content creation. I did lots of public speaking for more than a decade (10-400 people) and am a photographer. Anything (props, etc) that can help people better receive your message is important and should be included in every presentation. Take care.
