Jean Lafitte was a French pirate and privateer who operated in the Gulf of Mexico in the early 19th century. He was known for his politeness and smuggling skills, earning him the nickname "The Gentleman Pirate." He was hired by the U.S. government to fight against the British in the war of 1812 and also worked for other governments as a privateer with the permission to capture and steal the ship and cargo of their enemies. In 1817, he established a smuggling outpost in Galveston Island after being driven out of Louisiana. He found an already established colony, which he quickly took over and turned into a colony of over a thousand people. During his time in Galveston, he was involved in the illegal slave trade and the forced removal of the Karankawa indigenous population from the island. Lafitte's Galveston operation had an annual income in the millions but came to an end in 1820 when he was forced out by the US Navy. The whereabouts of Lafitte after he left Galveston are unknown. He is known for his thirst for riches, involvement in human trafficking and his shroud of mystery.
