I was 22 when I sailed around the world. I didn’t do the southern ocean , I went the slow cruise way. I vividly remember a night in the ocean when the stars mirrored the sea in a fantasy of light. You could not tell where the earth started, It was magic. I have also experienced several severe knockdowns and partial rollovers. As well as being in a severe storm for days on end with rollovers imminent at any moment. Yachts can pitch pole as depicted in the movie and a drogue may prevent that. Yachts don’t usually retain the mast in a pitch pole, however a sideways roll is possible to retain the rig and be underneath mountains of water. All you can do is hang on and pray. I think the movies presentation of events was hollywood fiction, major rollovers are actually just as dramatic and like being in a washing machine. the exhaustion, boredom and moments of pure terror could have been stretched a bit more. However the emotion they created took me back to moments in time I will never forget. My heart was racing for quiet a while later. Well done one of the better storm sailing movies I’ve seen.

I happen to watch the movie right now, and I did not know anything about it or that it was based on a true story. After whatching that scene I paused and googled to see if that is even possible. EPIRBS are usually always located just inside a boats cabin right beside the door where you exit.where is out of the weather but easily acessable in emergency. So somehow enough water was in contact with it to activate it. Usually these are attached at shoulder height also and not on the ground. So yes a lot of water made this activate automatically. Now have you ever been surfing or body boarding. waves pressure force you down as crash down and if a boat somehow can't stay on top of the wave it will do the same to a boat. Boats are built with air pockets and boats of today are built to float if capsized and the hull isn't punctured too much and even a little can survive as have sections so if one is damged the other parts of boat won't fill up So yes believe they can go under and surface again if the boat kept itself sealed off

0:30 Logic is half wrong. Jessica actually was upside down and underwater. Sailboats can roll over and retain cabin integrity. Being temporarily upside down is not a factor, depth is (exterior pressure grows as you sink deeper) , what happened is not unrealistic. Not to mention there are 'unsinkable' sailboats that have two hulls, inner and outer, in case the outside hull is ruptured. The movie simply depicts, as often movies do, a slow down in time to enhance the drama.
@BilldalSWE Жыл бұрын
When sailboats capsize and then right themselves they are never completely underwater. They are upside down with the bottom of the hull and keel still partly over water. In the movie the entire boat is seen dropping of a 70-80ft wave, smashing into the water upside down and then sinking at least 10 meters before returning to the surface which is completely unrealistic. The reason it might still be ok for a scene like that to exist is that for Jessica, being the only person there and being inside the boat it might have felt that way for her.
@NomadSurvivor Жыл бұрын
Exactly as stated in my comment. The Intertia created by any water movement is going to bring the keel back off center and she'll right herself rather quickly and the air in the cabin will lift her up enough that you'll be afloat again All within 10-20 seconds

To understand what happened, you need to know a little about sailboats and a few things about waves. The portrayal in the movie was definitely wrong as most of us know. Sailboats like hers will roll over side ways, and that is what happened if she was upside down. I'm not positive, but I believe I read that the waves that night were 15 meters or more. A wave that size is over 48 feet tall. The parts of a wave you need to know are the crest, which is the tallest point and the trough, which is the lowest point. The center point between the 2 is sea level. If she was rolled by a 15 meter wave, she would have been 24 feet below sea level with the crest of the wave traveling over her. How would you feel knowing your boat was that far below the surface of the ocean in the dark cold wet and alone. How many of you making comments wouldn't experience the worst fear in your life.

Sailboats have whats known as a Capsize ratio. To most, anything under 2 is considered acceptable. The lower the # the better as this # means the given time it might take a vessel to self right , this number is in minutes. So a boat with a capsize ratio is say 1.43 literally means one minute 43 seconds. A c&c such as pink Lady has rated ratio of about 1.80 depending on particular . model model

imho it depicts the boat capsized for several seconds not several minutes. Depiction of time for the boat is in "slowmo", while her family is shown closer to "real time". Sailor here! (and filmmaking enthusiast) I get the "jump the shark" feeling but I think it was a good choice from the director since stretching out the moment is one of the only few ways to make the viewer feel the level of tension Jessica felt in real life. How much would you as a viewer be shocked or cared if you only saw the boat a couple seconds underwater? I think even more than the length of the scene, what really gives some people the "Jump the shark" moment is the simple fact that the boat goes underwater and then it's able to right itself back up. This is perfectly possible for a monohull sailing boat but if you don't know how a boat works it surely looks far-fetched. Kinda like how people think if the engine of an airplane turns off or fails, the plane will plummet down to the ground like a meteor... when in reality the aerodynamics of an airplane can make it glide for several kilometres. Because of this some people thought that the last scene in Dunkirk when a warbird loses its engine and glides for several minutes is impossible but nothing could be more natural. Interesting topics! 😂

1:24 a sail boat will and can float under water for a period of time, thats fact. And the way a sail boat is made might even help keep it upside down, as for water tight, sure why not. The presure of water is greater then the presure of air if the air has to escape upwards but if the boats upside down waters not going to rush into the cabin space unless air rushes out the bottom of the boat. Be it 5min or 30min the airs going to stay in the cabin. My bet is the way the hatch works is better then what was showen in the movie. My dad years ago built boats he was in his 70s and 80s about the time this young girl did this and he always wanted to sail around the world in a boat like hers. He had only used boats on fresh water, but he had read that a sale boat will roll In the water and it won't sink if the hatch is closed. Durring the movie I knew the whole time the boat was under water it would pop back to the surface, how it knew to right itself is beyond me but it must have something to do with the boats balance being the keel weights more then the mask weights. And the cabin was full of air helping to right the boat. I cant imagine the feeling of being in a boat sealed in as its upside down under water, has to be the worst roller coaster ride in the world feeling, because its totally out of your control. The beauty of being in calm water no wind no waves for 8 days, yes id be lonely but can you imagine the stars at night without and city lights to block the view, that has to be amazing to see yet nerving you cant move. I guess a solar powered motor would be cheating. Now dyslexia, well I've got it also, it took me years in school to deal with it, and I still after 50 plus years make mistakes, my spelling not great and my English is poor at best but you can still succeed in life with it. Some of the greatest inventors had it you can search for famous people with dyslexia its a pretty big list and a lot of our modren technologies were found by people with dyslexia. See the worlds differnt from a different view.

That was one of the first things I commented on after seeing, obviously unrealistic but I get the dramatization. I still recommend this as one of the better sailing movies I have watched. The other gross offence that movies always make is getting the sails down in the midst of force 8+ winds. No real sailor does that, everything is battened down before the storm gets there, we have this thing called weather reports. If you are just taking down the sails in the start of the hurricane you shouldn't be out there.

In can understand the need to magnify the event in order to capture the feeling of being capsized. Most monohulls with a ballast keel will right themselves quickly. As others have mentioned it just felt like the scene was in slow motion rather than it actually being under water so long. This is further emphasized by when the boat does finally resurface the speed a which it rotates and surfaces is much faster, as if time is returning to normal. That said, the part that really took me out of the moment and felt absurd is that when she submerged she was being tossed by a gargantuan wave at the peak of a massive storm. Then as she resurfaces the water is flat and the storm is nearly clear as if she spent the rest of the storm underwater.

It's just a Hollywood way of telling the story of a pitch pole event, when the bow gets buried in the trough of a wave and the stern get pushed over. This is the worst sort of capsizing event possible, as everything in the boat not nailed down, is sent flying. It's also extremely rare. Even so, ballasted sailboats are designed to right themselves. Few sailboats however, have perfectly watertight hatches and seawater would be pouring in while the boat regains her footing. Most sailers have sense enough not to venture past 40 degrees south latitude or sail alone. And no, the boat was certainly not submerged like a submarine.

That's not really what jump the shark means.

Admired the real life achievement, didn't bother to watch the movie past that scene though.

Good film, but that scene was so ridiculous that it devalued the whole story. The director clearly knows nothing of sailing or reality.

That idiotic scene makes the claim of it "being based on a true story" seem absolutely absurd. That scene puts the film squarely in the fiction realm.

the movie extended the duration as it went to family scenes, i think you may have jumped the shark about this...

Great show but, she initially said she had a "Knock down". Any sailer will tell you that means your mast touches the water and your ballast brings you right side up. If you "Turtle" you go upside down... Laura Dekker is the youngest Person to circumnavigate the globe. Just sayin :)

Conta que ela teve 7 tombamentos naquele temporal. Se este não foi tão terrível, a quantidade certamente foi!

Well the falll upsidedown from that high, jees that boat is strong. Must been a scary rolercoaster ride. Yeah if the current is still going, then indeed she was riding the underwater wave upsidedown. This boat is made from foam, cant sink

You’ve got to be so American to not get that these scene reflects time slowing down. Take everything so literally!

Great movies exaggerated the most emotionally powerful points to exentuate the story n give impact! I thought it was amazing! Brought me to tears :') im not that judgemental but ya for the movies they make today i thought it was spectacular n now im interested in sailing n am uncovering this deep longing to be an explorer, so YA for me good movie aha. When you're in a bad spot mentally some times all it takes is one conversation or awe-inspiring movie/life event! Yk?

What was silly, was that just before the pitch pole she had the door boards to the cabin out so you could see the waves. So yeah huge shark jump just with that. The cabin would have filled with water even before the flip and boat would have gone down like a rock…… Being pitch poled and under for even a few moments would have been a pants filling event- no need to carry it to the silly level.

If you want a history lesson Hollywood is the wrong place, sadly school has become a place where historical accuracy also has little value.

it pulled me away so bad that i came to watch this video. xD Fucking hate when they break the immersion like this. They could have made it feel long somehow that we still know that it just felt long but it wasn't. .

This scene was absolutely ridiculous and really pushed the whole movie over the top for me. I think the story could have been just as compelling with a more realistic knockdown scene, or even a complete rollover scene, with waves and whitewater rushing over the boat on its side etc without having to resort to ridiculous and unrealistic theatrics!

I DONT THINKNK THE MOVIE STRETCHED IT OUT I FEEL LIKE YOU COULD HEAR THE SLOW MUSIC IT WAS JUST LIKE UM KIND OF IN HER HEART THAT IT FELT LONG LIKE I CANT EXPLAIN IT BUT LIKE THEY WERE JUST SHOWING THAT SCENE THEY WERNT TRYING TO GIVE JESSICA CREDIT OF STAYING THERE LONG THEY WERE TRYING TO EXPLAIN HOW SHE FELT DURING THAT TIME YOU KNOW PUTING IT IN SLOW MO TO JUST LIKE FEEL IT IF YOU WATCH THE MOVIE TRUE SPIRIT YOU WILL UNDERSTAND WHAT I MEAN BECAUSE IM NOW SURE IF IM REALLYY MAKING SENCE

I hate films that do crap for dramatic effect even in fiction, its even worse when its based on any kind of reality, its just bad writing and insults the intelligence of the audience, Its not quite as bad as Fury which at least was fiction, but it does indeed disconnect the viewer from the story, its that horrible habit producers and directors have in thinking its ''entertaining'' when in reality its the exact opposite.
