In this video, I argue that the burial story in the Gospels is authentic and Jesus's body was not left as carrion and thrown in a shallow grave. Find more videos on my channel: kzbin.info/door/21I7qYVHPsOzL9ujxiRWZA

Good work, Michael. Obviously one can take a highly skeptical stance like Ehrman, but I’ve found his anti-Christian bias that appears more prominently in his popular works than some of his scholarship moves far afield from a healthy scholarship that takes account of all the data. I appreciate these observations.

@earlychristianhistorywithm8684 what are your thoughts on ἐτάφη in 1st Corinthians 15? Do you think it means proper burial or something else?
@elliotwalton61595 ай бұрын
As an uneducated layman, I'm guessing the only 'fact' about Jesus that really matters is his resurrection. Also, I know you're familiar with Andrei Orlov. I found his book, 'The Glory of the Invisible God', very convincing in arguing there is far more to Mark than meets the eye. Thank you for this video. It was perfect for a Sunday morning.

Correct. The only important 'fact' about this Jesus is his supposed resurrection. I haven't encountered even one _evidentiary fact_ that goes toward demonstrating such an event ever occurred?

Absolutely not! The Romans didn’t afford burial rights to criminals but left them on the cross to further their humiliation…hence the tomb was empty!
@elanordeal24574 ай бұрын
we literally have archaeological evidence of the heel of a crucified judean man being found buried in a rock-tomb. the Romans may have been strict, but it’s not unthinkable that a society built on Pax Romana (peace) occasionally grant allowances to keep the peace between the people. So far the archaeological evidence posits it as a possibility, whereas your competing hypothesis has no archaeological evidence.

No….the Roman’s didn’t offer burial rights to criminals, they left them on the cross to rot to further their shame….thats why the tomb was empty….no resurrection!

Before you conern yourself about whether or not this Jesus was buried, wouldn't it be prudent to first establish that he was a historical person?
@sndpgr5 ай бұрын
So edgy! Before you ask the question about Historicity of Jesus it would have been prudent to ask what scholars of that time period think about the historicity of Jesus
@Theo_Skeptomai5 ай бұрын
@sndpgr The "scholars" of that time period didn't write _about_ Jesus, and if the accounts in the gospels were true l, they ought to have. This would include the two most prominent historians of the late 1st/early 2nd century, such as Flavius Josephus and Cornelius Tacitus. FJ has two fraudulent entries, and CT mentions Christ only anecdotally.

@@Theo_Skeptomai No I meant scholars of history dealing with this very question. Don’t they mostly agree that a person named Jesus existed based on whom the religion Christianity is based.

Let's face it - the earliest Christian writers we have show no knowledge of an historical crucifixion story. Even the canonical epistles seem unaware of any such details. What about Paul? If the 1 Corinthian passage is genuine he tells us that he got his knowledge about Jesus death and burial from "scripture". It's amazing how a pesher technique of interpretation can lead to a great deal of nonsense. Garbage in - garbage out. Funny how Joseph of Arimathea, ostensibly a member of the Sanhedrin, must have voted to condemn Jesus in spite of being a sympathiser. He's a useful character in the story who appears then forever disappears from the pages of the New Testament. ( See Isaiah 53:9) The gospels were "historical" fictions - the beginning of a super popular genre of literature that the believers lapped up.

I think your rejection is a bit polemical, Craig Keener and others have published massively on Greco Roman biography, and how the 4 gospels were impressively early compared to the biography of Alexander the Great and other known historical figures. So much of what is cynically rejected as fiction is promulgated by “music minors” who lack standing in the field. A music minor is the guy who passes himself off as an expert because he minored in it. Furthermore I notice that rejection of gospels stems from church hurt more than merits of the case. If so, sorry for your church hurt, and check out Keener’s work on ancient biography.
@auldlangsign31795 ай бұрын
@@SibleySteve At least we know who the sources for Alexander's life were - men who were on campaigns with him. Also we have Babylonian and Egyptian inscriptions not to mention coins bearing his likeness. Also, we have the works of several Greek and Roman authors who detail his life. The other dozens of gospels are also "imressively" early like the Gospel of Peter, the Infancy gospel of Thomas, the gospel of Joseph the Carpenter, the gospel of Mary, the Acts of Pilate. Nobody (even believers) believes a word of them. Early does not mean veracity. That my contribution here is from "church hurt" is absurd and quite an ad-hominem. Please read someone other than Craig Keener and you might broaden your horizons.
