It is wrong, but these are the times we live in, where if Johnny were to make one racial comment directed at one person, then suddenly that means his hatred is directed at an entire group of people!. I'm guessing he didn't have issues with Jews as both Joey and Tommy were Jewish and Tommy's parents were both holocaust survivors and even after leaving the band, Tommy continued his friendship with his fellow Ramones and continued producing their albums!. This is merely one video and one man's commentary and since Johnny is not here to defend himself, it's one-sided!..

It's not only wrong, it's lame. super lame. and cringe. In fact, what I'm about to say might be wrong too, but: I'm glad Johnny isn't around in this day and age to see how irritating, cringy and lame the post-Ramones world is. They're typically just people overcompensating to hide their own problematic pasts.

Johnny was also friends with Joe Strummer, on the opposite side of the political spectrum. Johnny Ramone was a very strange person, admirer of both Hitler and Charles Manson but also a Disney and a Baseball fan; racist to the bone, a woman beater, a former juvenile delinquent who claimed for televised public executions for thieves; and an Elvis fan who alleged that blues wasn't all that important in the development of rock 'n' roll (?). He was also a proud bully who bragged about having beat Malcolm McLaren just because he didn't like him talking to his girlfriend, among other things.

I think Marky was trying to be calm and avoid the question for many reasons. Johnny was a far-right republican and Reagan fan. It's hard to say whether he was some abject racist, but regardless people need to stop shitting on Marky. He was simply holding his tongue there. What we know for sure was that Joey was your run-of-the-mill hippie liberal while Johnny was mister big-time conservative.

@MemphoWrasslin1 Yep. The interviewer was trying to get a headline, trying to sensationalize what was actually said. I read Marky's book. There was nothing sensationalist in the book. That Johnny didn't get along with Joey was well known information before the book came out.

I'm 6 years late, but I just got this in my feed today. You don't know the meanings of the words you're using and I can almost guarantee that you're the type of person who paints with a broad brush. You said he was a "Far right republican Reagan fan." Anyone truly on the right does not identify as a Republican, and wouldn't consider themselves a big Reagan fan. I have a feeling that, to you, being a Republican puts you on the far right, and that "far" right is the only type of "right" you think exists. I'm pretty far right, many of my friends are too, and I can legitimately say that none of us are racists or fascists. And definitely don't consider ourselves Republicans.

I saw Johnny kick the shit out a young girl at a show because she reached up and touched his guitar while he was playing. I was standing right behind her. He kicked hard in the head 3 times and then motioned to security and had her and her boyfriend thrown out of the show. I'm not defending anybody but being just a few years younger than the Ramones, I can tell you growing up in the 60s and 70s as a white kid you were very much surrounded by prejudiced thinking and language towards most minorities. Particularly in a lower middle class setting probably. But it was pretty much all just talk, and certainly as the times wore on began to fade (as they are still fading). I'm sure in the black community there was a lot of salty racial stereotyping. I think it's all sad and wrong, but in these days of painting with the broadest brush possible it may be helpful to add some context and reality.

Here's A breakdown... Johnny was a Staunch Conservative with a dark sense of Humor. Joey was a Hardcore Liberal...... And Conservative's LOVE to get Liberals in a Panic. It makes their Day. And i think, especially after the problem with Linda transpired, that Johnny REALLY became a Fascist in Joey's eyes. Joey wrote THE KKK TOOK MY BABY AWAY.... even poor Monte Melnick has said on record..."read the lyrics, listen to the song...". ( Johnny was also reputed to carry a KKK membership card in his wallet, but i think it was just something to freak people out with, though if so... It's a pretty lame way to do so.) What Marky doesn't seem to answer is the direct question... Did Johnny collect Nazi stuff? Johnny doesn't seem the type, as he was more interested in Horror movie posters and baseball cards. I honestly think Racism was MAYBE there, but not something he dwelled on too Seriously. The person who DID collect Nazi stuff WAS Dee Dee. He grew up in Germany and has said on record that that was just something kids did back in the days when you could scour areas of battle and find and trade things. But i don't think that this made Dee Dee a racist. Dee Dee's Major concern was getting through a full day of being Dee Dee. At the end of the day? I think the Fascist card was just something played out between Joey and Johnny for WHATEVER reason only known to them. I think Johnny viewed a Black RAMONES Fan no different than a Latino Fan ...or a Jewish Fan ...or an Asian Fan ...or a White Fan. A RAMONES Fan is a RAMONES Fan. .....unless you were a Commie. Right, but as it turns out was not written about Johnny. I can see how you could see the lyrics that way, but otherwise it’s apparently a mistake by monte. Johnny is famously a huge dickhead. I don’t think he was out to get Joeys goat as much as it annoyed him that Joey was into what he was. they relied on each other for their living and I assume the animosity has way more to do with Johnny marrying Linda than anything else. But being prejudiced isn’t really surprising or something that needs defending. He lived unapologetically, and we don’t need to apologize or make excuses for it. He just was what he was.

Its human nature to discriminate in general (ie types of people or things, that one likes or doesnt like). So what if Johnny was a "racist", murder and theft are worse behaviors than racial slurs or "racist" thinking-- yet in todays world many are far more shocked by differing views and opinions, than by theft or murder. I dont agree with everything that Johnny believed, but I actually admire the fact that he was "politically incorrect" (so few are in today's world). And it actually makes me like Johnny even more. DG

I usually hate it when someone says that about not being sensitive about things, but you do have a point in this case. It was what it was. It gave us the great music we have now, even if Johnny was a Republican. He definitely WAS a Republican. He made no bones about that, said it himself. Marky basically says no but doesn't answer to sell his book. So not technically throwing Johnny under the bus but I completely blame the interviewer for trying so hard to paint Johnny like that.
@Godloveszaza Жыл бұрын
Johnny used the hard r before and Marky spoke on that as well. He never ended up saying he was he just asserted how irritated it made him since he grew up in a family who preached that color didn't matter.

Nah, fuck you. Big fan of them all, despite their beliefs, because to me, it's about the music. Yet, they were all getting along, a band, I doubt that was his intention at all. Marky told it how it was. This was common knowledge among fans even before the book, and before this interview. Johnny was a racist sack of shit with good music. Leave it there.

Johnny was racist though. He frequently used the n word as a racial slur according to marky, his ex gf and his tour manager, a black and chinese bassist auditioned for the band and johnny made names for them such as “spook ramone” or “LiLi Ramone” which was used to make fun of them.. he also said many more stuff racist things. Stop pulling the “marky is calling him racist for disagreeing with him card” johnny was clearly a racist. I’m still a big fan of the ramones and respect johnny but he indeed was a racist guy.. thank you for those who read this whole paragraph!

No you´re not a racist then...but saying ´the war was cool and it´s a punk thing´ is one of the most ignorant things I have read in a while. Don't believe everything Mark says. He talked shit about everyone. I heard first hand the shit he said about the other guys. After they retired, I met him and asked him to sign my jacket. CJ had already signed it. And Mark told me I shouldn't have CJ on my jacket because he wasn't a Ramone. At another time, me and a friend of mine were talking to him about what all the other Ramones were up to. He said Joey is just getting fat and can't sing any more. He just doesn't have good things to say about anyone. He just wants to build himself up. Even talked shit about Jerry Only and the MIsfits after he played with them. I'm a big Ramones fan but that shit just sucks. By the way, CJ and Richie are cool as shit.

There is an interview with Johnny Ramone where he talks about being a fan of Little Richard. The Nazi memorabilia thing sounds a bit weird but the same can be said of Lemmy who definitely was not a racist. I imagine Johnny was probably quite a mean person with good qualities, and the other band members recognised that. Ultimately you have to separate the art from the artist, and none of the Ramones' music condoned racism.
