Khalid's victories were based on urging fanatical followers with promises of Paradise, feints, lies, treachery, deceit, cunning and terror. At Yarmuk he led the Byzantine army into dangerous terrain that suited his lightly-clad guerrilla-style men but meant death for a heavily-armed disciplined army fighting in ranks. In the end, Byzantine soldiers were so exhausted and terrorised that they lay down to die. Did Khalid show any mercy? Of course not. He and his men slaughtered the dying men whilst screaming Allah akbar! We love death more than you love life!' At that it is interesting to note that the Byzantines, though Christian, were not fighting fanatically in the name of a god as the Muslims were. It was not until centuries later that the Crusades started and that was in response to the Muslim conquest of Jerusalem and the Seljuks preventing Christians from pilgrimages to Jerusalem.
