I believe Malcolm X was a 100% straight man. That's an opinion. But what is a fact is that he put his life on the line for us. When I think of Malcolm X ( the man who taught me how to be a man from the grave), I think of his bravery and uncompromising, god-like orator skills that explained the systematic attack of this government that is still relevant and true to this day. He was a prophet who fought for all fronts who were oppressed, and anything outside of that is a footnote that doesn't matter to me. But for the record, IDC, if it was in Malcolm's 20s. If J Edgar Hoover (FBI) hadn't spread it publically in the '60s, I have a hard time believing it. That man had a file that went back to childhood on JFK, RFK, LBJ, MLK, and every other three-letter abbreviation person. And Malcolm was his #1 fear. So no... I don't think he was LGBT, but he was a human being fighting for the rights of human beings!

I've read both, Marable and Hailey's books about Malcolm. Manning Marable's book was much more solacious which is a literary tactic that draws people in with curiosity. Especially when the subject is a controversial figure (to whites) such as Malcolm X. I take it all with a grain of salt because one thing I know about white people and their telling and re-telling of truths is that they have no problem changing history or skewing it in a way to benefit them. How does planting a seed of Malcolm being bisexual benefit whites? you might ask. Well with what we know about how people feel about anything gay or remotely gay, it's a way of emasculating and changing the focus on his messages to more about was he bisexual. I'm a gay black man and I feel I was born this way but I do think that sexuality is fluid for most people and I wouldn't put it past Malcolm or any other straight identifying man to have engaged in homosexual activity at some point. That doesn't necessarily make them gay or bisexual if they did. Everyone should have the freedom to try things and determine if it's for them. Survival sex is definitely not to be confused with bisexuality. Humans have been known to do things just to survive and sex is an option for many, especially black men who are fetishized by whites and other non-black POC. I'm sure with Malcolm's good looks and long lean physique he was being approached by white men often and I'm sure the offers were tempting. I think most black men can relate because no other race of men is as fetishized as we are and especially by old white men who have the means to use their money to get what they want. If Malcolm was indeed poor and in desperate need of money, then by all means he probably did do some things with men but it was not due to an attraction to them. It was more probable that it was for survival. Nothing has really changed as today white men and even white couples are still secretly approaching black men just for sexual encounters.

To correct and add to your research, Malcolm's activism certainly did NOT begin in prison. His parents were active and prominent members of Garvey's group and had been sent to Nebraska where Malcolm happened to be born. Secondly, before Malcolm's Little Red days in NYC, he was attending Communist Party USA meetings with Party member Vicki Garvin, a Black woman. The Party thought so highly of him they invited him to join the Communist Party. Malcolm declined. This was all before prison and the Nation of Islam.

The demonization of queer men is what leaves young men vulnerable for exploitation. If Malcolm was in fact needing to offer his body for payment, I’m not sure he would be inclined to disclose that for fear of having all of his work overshadowed by his sexual experiences. I am still hoping for the day that men can be free to embrace all parts of themselves (given these experiences are consensual) so they don’t have to hide pieces of their identity to avoid scrutiny.

I appreciate your nuanced approach to this. I just don't see how being preyed upon and sexually assaulted as a child by an adult of the same gender or being gay for pay makes one gay or bisexual. There is no record of Malcolm X having been ATTRACTED to men. Absent any proof of that either out of his own mouth or through his demonstrable actions, one must conclude that he was neither gay nor bisexual. How I understood it, is that he did have gay activities in his youth, (he was probably bisexual). The point is.... what did they DO to him?? I think Malcom X later in life, saw his gay activities as traumatic events, where white adults took advantage of his youth and sexuality. He saw white men paying sexual attention too him as love, and then later in life, realized that it was nothing but exploitation. That trauma is something we should focus on, not his sexuality.

When I would study Black history in my adolescence and teen years, some information I refused to believe or consider. I was involved in a lot of Black history groups at the time while also attending racist schools. Any time there was something that I couldn't believe or made me feel uncomfortable, I would find an excuse. Any information that said differently felt like an attack. Now as a woman, I simply accept the undeniable facts or the possibilities without judgment. I basically take "It is what it was" approach with history. I have heard of Malcolm X being bisexual and if he was, then that's what it was. It doesn't undo all of the work he did or take away from the powerful things that he said. It doesn't make me see him in a different light. Whether he did sexual things for payment or that was how he swayed, I wouldn't want any other Malcolm X. I think the only person in history that I can think of whose actions made me disgusted with them was Frederick Douglass and the treatment of his wife. I like Malcolm X. The depression was much worse within the black communities urban and rural. We're still in depression and by 2050 the median black household will be 0. When you purposely girded to the bottom all expression of sexuality and pairbonding is impacted by your cast. ALL expression, even twerking (example) which is merely how impoverished girls signal that they are only available for procreation with males committed to fast money. Bi Sexual is a term that conveys deep thought and consent but I'm sure young brotha's with distended belly circa the late 30's would call it a hustle. Trauma makes people make all kinds of choices they wouldn't normally make if they were whole..and we still aren't.

There appears no definite proof that Malcolm X was homosexual or bisexual. Now, in his youth, as he himself admitted in his autobiography he engaged in such lifestyles in the past, after he converted to Islam he appeared to have led a morally upright life afterwards. In his lifetime, even his closest associates did not infer or hint that he led such a lifestyle either overtly or secretly as a devout muslim, not even when some of them turned on him did they ever bring his lifestyle up. It has only been in the decades following his untimely assassination that these allegations have supposedly 'come to light', which has cause some prurient minds to speculate that he was gay or bisexual, which to this day has not been unequivocally and conclusively proven.

I know you had to do a quick overview of Malcolm X’s life for those who may not know but - I would say his political upbringing didn’t commence in prison but rather his childhood with both of his parents being Garveyites - folks that believed in the message of Marcus Garvey that shaped his tremendously

Your commentary was fascinating, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I must admit having curiosity about whether or not Malcolm was bisexual. At the end of the day, however, it doesn't change what I think of him as a historic figure.

because of our history? because of the centuries of oppression and persecution of queer people by european christianity and colonialism? people literally try to say we invented queerness a couple years ago like the nazis didn't burn academic research on sexuality or put pink triangles on people.

People are weird and act the same towards Barack Obama when he talked about his past life. People forget him and Malcolm X were regular people before being important figures to the black community. I grew up reading so many books of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King. I am Canadian too.

I'm less interested in the man's sexual practice, and more about his sexual politics. In his accounting of homosexuality in his youth, what was the attitude he had? That information is alot more useful to us all, I think.

MX was probably adjacent. But queer or not he did so much more beyond just sexuality. 25:18-25:40, I'm with his fam. From my queer (ace) perspective, sexuality is part of you but it isn't all of you. Also, we need to really let go of sexualising people and fantasing of what they coulda/woulda/shoulda done (including how people fantasise about being sexually involved with them yourselves). We need to see and read history as is. Definitely ask probing questions to get a better image and understanding of what was but we can't be out here creating narratives and writing history based on *_OUR_* own POV and desires. That being said, being entirely removed from the subject and objective/impartial is virtually impossible. The best we could probably get is having people from different backgrounds and POVs all research the same topic, and the rest of us looking at their results to find the middle ground/harmonies.

This was fascinating. I’d never heard about this possibility. I’m queer myself and am interested in seeking more truth in the history we taught. It doesn’t matter to me if he was or wasn’t, but I really loved how you went beyond the question of his sexuality to discuss the implications of the backlash just at the speculation that he might have been queer. I really learned a lot and have all kinds of things to think about. It’s sad that even now, for most people the idea that he could have been queer would “tarnish” his legacy. We still have a ways to go.

From a comment from a review of the book.. not an accurate depiction of Malcolm’s life Based on his speeches, interviews, and written beliefs. I don’t find most of the information accurate as the source is not someone who who was fond Nor a fan of Malcolm’s perception of white 🇺🇸👍 I concur as historically any strong Blk man who has ever posed a Nate turner threat to 🇺🇸what have done… not only 🇺🇸 Google Dr Amos Wilson rim ❤ Let’s do this

Malcolm X's bisexuality and hustler background would be more plausible if the biographers had interviewed his daughter or had declassified FBI files proving it. If he was, I as a bisexual welcome him as my role model for a still further reason! I like your attitude about his possible bi-life!

I'm bisexual so My opinion is no he wasn't bisexual, what is shocking is in my 50 years of living , being a NAACP truth teller and a Black panther party member, Malcolm X did have affairs on his wife Betty with White Women , hilarious and Martin Luther King Jr., and this is what was hidden in the 70s until recently.

this thought exercise is fun. I also love to think of Ancestor James & Ancestor Malcolm as being pen pals/ besties. was he bisexual? idk. the energy is giving. the historical accounts not so much. but he was queer. queer as is activist. queer as is Black. queer as in care full. queer as in deviant. queer as in existing in spite of the status quo. that's all the queer I need.
