Carrick and Fletcher were the players I respected most of Man United who I absolutely despised (and still do tbf) they both did the unheralded jobs and the dirty work and didn't get enough credit for it. One thing this video didn't mention was that Carrick was signed at the same time as Owen Hargreaves. I always assumed that Fergie meant them to play together with Hargreaves being the hardworking, aggressive, ball winner and Carrick being there to provide vision and passing ability. Sadly Hargreaves injury problems meant this never really happened, but it's interesting to wonder whether Carrick's role would have been slightly different if this had panned out.

I love this video. Your content and the way you've presented it is fantastic. But most of all, thank you for putting some respect on the name of one of my favourite and without question the most underrated english midfielder in history.

The one player that United actually missed. The missing key to another great era.

His passing, reading of the game and ability to make interceptions, vision and balance were all elite. Add to that, he was pretty strong, not a bad tackler, had a good touch and scored the occasional screamer. Great player. The epitome of a deep-lying playmaker. Absolute metronome. No English CM of that Era dictated tempo like he did. Not Gerrard, Not Lampard, maybe not even Scholes.

Yes he was a straight up baller

Agreed with basically everything except the Scholes one. No player dictated play like Scholes

Carrick was ahead of his time playing in England. At that time, he would get into most big European clubs in my opinion as they had more fluid formations and knew how to employ the Regista in their squads whilst England were stuck with flat 4-4-2 formations which translated into the national team. He may have got some more recognition if he were a free kick taker/penalty taker. I'd love to see a video like this to Frank Lampard. I always felt that Lampard offered less to the balance of the national team at that time compared to Carrick.

The only stat that favors Carrick is the only one that truly matters. United's win % with and without him shows just how important he truly was. He made United better every time he's on the pitch.

Watching this now as Ten Hag just completed his first season, and a Carrick is what we are so sorely missing in the midfield. Easily one of the best PL midfielders of all time who doesn't get mentioned as such nearly enough.

I never appreciated him until the twilight of his career, midfield is probably the most difficult position on the field to play, the game can just pass you by. Now I know that i was wrong. Michael Carrick was an incredible player.

Carrick had an ability uncommon in British players, he understood the tempo of the game and this combined with his good vision and pure clean striking of the ball meant he could find a safe pass or a penetrative killer ball at the right moment. Unlucky he came prominence amongst a so called "golden generation" of English midfielders and a preference for shoehorning star players into the first eleven by England managers at the time.

He was a star….missed him at West Ham. Definitely underrated

To be honest, when he was in his pomp, I was too young to understand the more complex aspect of the game. I didn't rate him at all. It's only now I realise what a player he was

Carrick made more accurate long distant passes for United from midfield than anyone in the modern game. I always remember thinking Carrick has the ball and expecting him by the end to loft an accurate pass to someone ....He was relentless at it of keeping an accurate flow from the centre.

He was very much under appreciated by England coaches but for us(United) he was very much appreciated by the majority of fans. Only people who didn't class him as a quality player were the people who didn't understand his position and importance to the side or those who expected hollywood type performances, passes, skills and goals. He is exactly the type of player we are missing right now

England could have made it much further in tournaments, if they would have used him an Scholes more.

Michael Carrick in my opinion is one of the most underrated players in world football and I have no apologies for my opinion. His passing range was brilliant. He knows how to orchestrate play from deep in midfield. The number of long range passes he created for the likes of Rooney and Ronaldo (during his first stay at United) was incredibly impressive ! How I wish the current United team has a player that plays exactly like Carrick....they would be almost unstoppable. His short and long range passes is exactly what United needs. He made United's midfield tick by being a deep lying ball playing defensive midfielder. Carrick had the ability to turn defense into attack with one visionary long range pass. No wonder Sir Alex Ferguson kept picking him in his Team. I will like people to go and watch the best moments of Carrick when he was still playing for Manchester United. Anytime I see Fred and Matic performing badly for United in that midfield, it makes me miss Carrick the more. Carrick rarely loses possession and most times makes the right decision. Unfortunately Fred and Matic are the complete opposite of what Michael Carrick was in his playing days for Manchester United.
