@@cachedreamer far better? perhaps not. But certainly better. Carrick was one of those strange cases where he was undervalued during his playing days, but overrated after retirement. He was a good solid player that was not appreciated like he should have been, but no more than that. Montolivo is in that same category. The difference between them is that Montolivo was very dynamic, he had everything that Carrick had, but he had a bit more going forwards. And that was perhaps his downfall. If he had stayed back and played safe like Carrick, dictating play from deep, he would have left a better legacy for himself, but he was asked to push up and dictate attacks from further forward, because he could, but he sometimes failed to do so. It's something that would never be asked of Carrick, because he didn't have the ability to do so. It's why Pirlo says that Montolivo was a better footballer than Carrick. He was. But he wasn't used by his coaches in the same way.

This may get buried, but I think if Scholes had focused on the deep CM role his entire life, he would be regarded as the best in that position of all time. His post 30 play was truly incredible, but if he had focused on that from a younger age, he could have hit that point far younger and just imagine how terrifying that would be. There's a story about Scholes and Ronaldo that used to circulate United fan groups. It's likely not true but here it is: When Ronaldo came to United, being his high-flair and super confident self, he took up all the attention on/off the pitch and would boast to his team about how good he was. Then one day during a training session Scholes came up to him and said "You see that tree over there?", as he pointed to a tree that was over half a pitch away, "I can hit that tree dead on from here first try" and then he did exactly that on his first try. Ronaldo picked up the gauntlet and tried several times without hitting the tree. Which humbled Ronaldo and helped him on his way to become a legend. True or not, I think it perfectly encapsulates Scholes as a character and player. A player out of the spotlight relative to his teammates, but a confident and composed master of the game.

Just for some context. Roy Keane and Scholes are two football players that United have STILL not been able to recreate. They got peak Hargreaves, Veron, Schweinstager, Pogba, VdB and many more to try and fail miserably. Even a 39 year old Scholes would start for most teams in the PL, certainly United and even Liverpool and Chelsea right now. City perhaps not, that’s just about the only PL team I feel he might not be a sure starter for. He’s better than all the players they have in the midfield, but the level of competition is too high for him to start week in week out. Great video man!

Hey I'm a second striker who people think should play as an 8 because of my passing! Someone I can relate to
@RichO1701e3 жыл бұрын
Definitely underrated. It says everything about how underrated he was by the comments you read from the greats of the game that get all the plaudits, Pirlo, Zidane, Iniesta, Henry. Mainly down to his own humble, salt of the earth persona, when compared to the football celebrities he was surrounded by, Beckham, Giggs etc. He was often overlooked by the media, but he also shied away from the limelight, so there's that too. He was a big fish in a big pond during Utd's most successful years as well, whereas Gerrard was the main big fish for LFC and similar with Lamp's at Chelsea. He did the right thing with England, retiring early to prolong his club career. He failed with England as much as every other England player did during that time. Best volleyer of a ball I've ever seen.

The only people that call him overrated are those than never saw him play. Best passer I've ever seen.

He was never underrated by other professionals.,only by spectators. He was pure class one of the best midfielders ever. If you dont agree take it up with guardiola, cos what does he know. The fact Alex Ferguson spent a fortune on players in every other position throughout Scholes career whilst Scholes was still there never needing to be replaced because there was nothing better than Scholes.

The further we get from Scholes actually playing, the better he becomes. The same happened with Pirlo, who was good, but not revered until he moved into the Regista role for Juve towards the end of his career. You're starting to see the same happen with Michael Carrick as well (inc. on this channel) There's a reason these players weren't hyped at the time, and it's because they were being rated WHILST they were playing, rather than with the benefit of nostalgia.

@@FootballIconic 11 out of 40 vids are solely about ex Manchester United players... with man United players referenced in several others. Your first upload was also. The Majority of your videos are on general premier league players... but specific clubs players... 3 arsenal, 1 Liverpool, 2 Chelsea... 11 Manchester United. I'm just waiting for the CR7 special. If you aren't a Manchester United, fan, what club do you support? The bias comes clearly through on your opinion peices. The who was best out of Scholes, Gerrard lampard was scandalously biased with specific unusual stats forced to suit your agenda. Its a shame because your production quality and delivery is top notch. But the bias puts me off so much.

@@christor2907 I'm sorry you feel that way man. I am a United fan and have been open about it in the past. United have won 13 out of the first 21 PL titles and my videos are mostly about the 90s and 2000s. It is impossible to not make reference to United and United players. However, I'm a massive fan of football in general, not just United. Which is why I make videos on every team and player. Even more so, 90% of all my content is facts and no opinion. My longest and most detailed videos are not even about United. But perhaps bias creeps in every now and then. Apologies if that puts you off. All the best, bro.

I know his passes and crosses is spot on, but what i love about scholes is how he shot a long ranger with little effort. I envy that

Its ridiculous that this is even a debate. English football culture never truly appreciated technical players like him.

Scholes is enormously underrated by fans and pundits... but mysteriously, most of the greatest players of the last 30 years put him right up there with the best.

One of my favourite assists was the one against AC Milan at Old Trafford to Rooney who scored . That game finished 3-2.

More skill in his wrong foot than Lampard or Gerrard in their whole bodies. The whole world recognised him as the best midfielder in Europe, including the Spaniards, yet we played him out left!

that goal at 11.34 wowsers. against bradford city, beckham corner direct to the edge of the area, a rampaging scholes meets it perfectly and it's straight in the net. the ball didn't even touch the ground lol.

He was mint. A lot of people take the piss but for me it goes, Him Gerrard Then lampard. Lampard scored a ridiculous amount of goals but had the attacking freedom to do so.

Underrated. Ginger kid from Salford who disliked being in the spotlight. Did his job and went home. Best long passing foot in Premier League history, best ever in the PL to control the tempo of the game and packed a punch. People will claim Gerrard was better solely due to his shine in a poor Liverpool side. He scored more goals because he had to step up. That was not Scholes´ job. It should not have been Gerrard´s either, but it was. Simple.

Another good video once again, feel bad for Scholes, not only did he play for England which meant he didn't win any trophies there as usual and he got stuck on the wing for no reason, he also missed out on the iconic once in a lifetime treble winning game due to injury and also had asthma and vision problem for a large period of his life, the man was really unlucky.
