Because we can run into a problem real quick with that train of thought. i.e. Unless Oda explicitly states that Mihawk is stronger than Brook, he isn't stronger than him. After all, he hasn't fought or defeated Brook. Now remove Brook, and insert every other swordsman we know and you will hopefully see how impractical it is. Him being dubbed WSSM is enough as it encompasses all swordsmen whether he's fought them or not.

Really he wasn't there for smoke but to tell Shanks about Luffy, so it seems like a way to get on track to what he wanted to discuss. I’m pretty sure if you follow the text mihawk stated he wanted to get even with shanks which typically means shanks did something to him and he wanted to get him back for it, but to mihawk whether or not shanks is stronger with or without the arm he feels like it’s a handicap to fight him without it. It’s a dishonorable win which prefaces the first scene he’s in where he respects zoro because he won’t allow a scratch on his back because it’s dishonorable. Whether shanks or mihawk is stronger will always be up for the debate because their battle ended in a stalemate. Through straight swordsmanship you can say he’s the best but he still hasn’t beat shanks and it’s proven he’s improved since his past battles with mihawk. The world’s strongest swordsman is a valid title but it doesn’t necessarily mean he’s the strongest person carrying a sword.

I don't think it's too big a s strech to say that Nusjuro could be in the same tier as Mihawk, since he has centries on experience, an awakaned mythical zoan devil fruit probably has a supreme great blade and is can regenerate. people gotta realize that luffy dodging mihawks slashes wasn't really that hard because in reality the slash had to travel REALLY far to reach luffy like id say 100 / 200 meters and we have seen luffy being able to dodge light beams ( that most likely travel at light speed ) so its not really that hard too say that he could have dodged the slashes pretty easily but getting a direct slash like up close and personal with mihawk would probably end anyone's life in the one piece verse at this point

honestly I can see Oda pulling out the cop out of Mihawk being the WSS because Shanks and him haven't battled each other in a while. Buggy and Shanks will be at raftel by the end of the series since they made a deal when they were kids meaning, Zoro and Luffy will fight Mihawk and Shanks before getting the One Piece which means that Shanks and Mihawk have to be equals bare minimum or Shanks is stronger than Mihawk. Mihawk cannot be stronger than Shanks or else it wouldn't make any sense why Zoro is fighting a stronger pirate than Luffy before the One Piece. Zoro definitely isn't fighting Mihawk after the One Piece because 1. It ruins the Buggy story and 2. It would make more sense for Zoro and Luffy reaching their dreams together since this was their mission statement from day 1. Additionally, I think what makes Mihawk the WSS is the Black Blade. I think that has some major implications to who has reached the pinnacle of swordsmanship and I also think that Shanks can simply use his conq haki to attack at range mixed with his swordmanship. Yes Shanks is a swordsman but I think Shank's fighting style isn't as straightforwards as ONLY swordsmanship. In b4 someone that says haki is apart of swordsmanship, yes it is, but we also don't know the full extent of ACOC and we have seen ACOC being shot off like lightning bolt attacks so I wouldn't be surprised if Shanks can rain down haki lighting which would be outside the realms of swordsmanship, therefore, could we really consider Shanks to be WSS if he is also using ACOC to attack instead of only imbuing his sword in it.

Let's see shanks vs mihawk Strength-mihawk he has an extra arm Speed-shanks Durability-mihawk Agility-shanks IQ- shanks (he has been planning to take down BB for years and supposedly knew about joy boy) Battle IQ- mihawk Skills-mihawk (he has an extra arm it may be sound like a joke but how good do you think someone with one arm is) Armament haki-mihawk (he's using a black blade) Observation haki-shanks (I'm not glazing but mihawk doesn't have that many feats on Haki and for now shanks has the longest future sight for about 10-50 secs if you asking why I said 50 secs if you watch the clip of shanks future from the beginning to the end it's 50 secs long but this is my headcanon tbh) Conqueror's haki-both Note:Haki is NOT skill the reason why mihawk would teach Haki to Zoro is for 3 reasons First of all to make his swords stronger second of all to make his swords more durable and third of all he saw Zoro's will and determination in him so teaching him Haki will come in handy if he's fighting someone stronger than him because Haki gets stronger during fights especially fighting someone stronger than you. Claiming that Mihawk has stronger haki means that if Luffy takes up a sword, he can’t have stronger haki than mihawk because he is not strongest swordsman. It means anyone with a sword who could have stronger haki than mihawk (shanks, Roger and wb) are lesser to him because of his title and you assume it includes haki but it doesn’t. Mihawk being the storngest swordsman is naturally acceptable, but him being the strongest over all is not. He has always been touted as the strongest swordsman with 'sword skill greater than even Shanks.' But he is never touted for his Haki. In terms of Haki, it's always been Shanks who is shown both feat and portrayal time and time again. Now I am not saying that Mihawk doesn't have crazy Haki of all three forms, he ought to have it, but unless explicitly stated that his Haki is greater than even Shanks (which has never once happened so far for HAKI) it makes no sense that he is stronger than Shanks. I have started to consider the possibility that they are somewhat equal with Mihawk's advantage being a greater sword skill, and Shanks advantage being greater Haki proficiency. Perhaps this wasn't the case 12 years ago during their regular duals, but after that, maybe not. After losing his arm, Shanks probably put more attention on his Haki to make up for the loss of his arm in order to not lose his strength which leads to current situation.

I forgot to mention the recent chapter about haki sealing but at that point is it really necessary to explain that in ancient times they used to seal haki. It was uncertain how blades could turn black but now it is almost certain that there was technologie related to haki and those blades were crafted in those times. Explaining why Zoro's Wado and Enma aren't black blades. Because those blades are far too recent since they were made by Kuina's granfather, so about 60-200 years ago. Explaining why those blades aren't black blades, because the tech is not discovered yet. like there's so many things I lowkey expected in 1122, I had a feeling about armament haki sealing but conquerors is beyond me and knowing there is conquerors haki superior to Shanks when we can easily say he has the strongest conquerors haki atm, wich puts into perspective the level of EOS Luffy, Roger was him when he was fighting Rocks, Whitebeard never touched that level
