Yes football wasn't the same in earlier eras, often footballers of those earlier eras.Had to face far more rough and dangerous reckless tackling from the opposition faced.And played on worse quality pitches, had to wear heavier boots, and played games with footballs that had no waterproofing and had an outer case that had what looked like shoelace keeping the inner blader in place.And when those footballs got wet they also became heavier too.I am of an age where I used to play with such a football back in the early 1970s, as a young boy.And a modern football is easier to play with in matches.

Brazilian local newspaper reports dating back to that day testify that fact that Pelé in fact did score by flicking the ball over 2 defenders and the goalkeeper before heading it into the goal. You can find pictures of that news report in a video called "Pele goals de placa". The video shows the two best goals in Pelé's career and sadly neither has video footage. You can also read about the goal in an article called "The greatest goal Pelé ever scored" by a publication called Game Of The People.

Imagine thinking Pele was overrated. There are too many contrarians running around these days. When people talk about Puskas, Charlton, Esebio, Di Stefano, Best, Garrincha, Moore, Cruyff etc they are all universally adored regardless of what era they were in. There were a lot of people who got to witness some if not all of these guys play during their lifetime and Pele was almost always considered the consensus best of the lot. Shit it wasn't until Diego Maradona hit his prime that people even entertained a better football player ever existing and even then a lot of those guys put Maradona as 1b to Pele's 1a. And people haven't put anyone alongside Maradona until Ronaldo and Messi came along. Pele is sitting at the greatest players to ever live table. It's hard to choose the definitive best ever but he's at that table.

And Pele in the 58 world cup (when he was a kid) and in the 1970 world cup was phenomenal. He didn't become the most famous player in history just for fun. All the great players from history called him the GOAT because they either watched him play for Brazil or played against him when he was with Brazil. Garrincha was there too. He also gets his flowers from these guys but Pele is the one who got the most adulation because he was the best. He's started getting more love now that he's dead but for years he was in that rare status of greatness when you become so great everyone just has to call you overrated 😂 People do it all the time with band's like The Beatles or people like Mohammed Ali. Once your greatness becomes so vast that it becomes cool to hate you, you know you've really made it 👍
