I love how you say this. Even the book of mormon (which I'm slowly reading) addresses how he speaks the same word now and he did then, meaning which is great bc a Christian looming into mormonism has to be certain that it is the same God and that he can be tested like how when the gospel was first being told, Berean would search the scriptures, and even Paul would admonish his spiritual son timothy to study to show himself approved. Thank you! I get SO tired of batting away this ridiculous argument based on misunderstood scripture. The Bible was not handed down from Heaven in one tidy monolithic block with the warning "do not add anything" tacked on to the end. In the days before "read-only" computer files, this warning at the end of the book/scroll of Revelation served to warn would-be editors or copyists thereof to not even think of tampering with the text. (Not that that necessarily stopped them.)

True. The Bible itself was compiled from a bunch of competing texts only in the 300s AD. Also, there are a lot of differences between papyri fragments of Revelation in existence, so the JST of Revelation is not a big deal, since it is an inspired translation of what Revelation originally said.

In my opinion, adding to and taking away from scripture may include simply explaining away God's word, misleading others as to its meaning, or substituting men's philosophies or explanations for scripture. But additional prophecy / prophets were specifically meant for the preservation of the doctrine and its correct understanding and interpretation. Ephesians 4. So we would expect to see further revelation in the church of Jesus Christ.

Also, Deuteronomy 4:2 says similar, 'You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you'. Therefore, if you take the argument the verses in Revelation apply to the whole Bible, you'd have to apply that to the Torah and say that not only should we exclude the entirety of the New Testament but most of the Old Testament, and only keep the first five books of Moses. This argument simply doesn't work and clearly refers to the individual books such as the laws contained within the Book of Deuteronomy specifically and the prophecies contained within the Book of Revelation specifically rather than the Bible which is a collection of books.

Time has placed us so far removed from the time it started, it makes the dividing lines even deeper. Hopefully as we all do healing for ourselves first, dealing with our personal shortcomings (bc we all have them right) before we go to one another (like the speck and the log teaching!) Matthew and John are writing down their own experiences from when Christ was here on earth with Matthew focused on the fulfillment of prophecies and John focused on proving Jesus is the Son of God. Mark is telling the story from Peters perspective but more focused on the words of Christ. Luke is taking eye witnessed accounts and writing it more as a history. None of that is at all similar to how the Book of Mormon was revealed. All four gospels in the Bible were from people's testimonies and The Book of Mormon was Joseph Smith translating what was said down that Nephi, Mormon and Moroni wrote down.

Revelations 22:18 let’s start with the scripture in Revelation 22:18-19. The words “this book” can only refer to the Book of Revelation rather than to the whole bible, since the New Testament wasn’t even compiled when Revelation was written. That concept is confirmed in the cited scripture by the words the book of this prophecy, which of course is the Book of Revelation. John is saying that if the Book of Revelation is altered from the way it was written, the person doing so would be punished by the Lord. Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you. (Deuteronomy 4:2) So, based on their logic, we should discard everything written in the Bible beyond Deut. 4:2. You might also direct them to the book of Amos where we learn that the Lord will do nothing without beforehand revealing it to his prophets. (Amos 3:7). If these prophets were to write his revelations to them it is hard to imagine that they would fall under the Lord’s condemnation.

From what I understand, what you have said is true. As much as I would like to think the early church leaders were fierce abolitionists, it seems that they were products of their time, wrestling with these questions as many people were. We in the Church today denounce any racist stances they held. (Joseph Smith did seem to change to a more abolitionist stance later in life). It should be noted that ideas about the curse of Cain and/or Ham being black skin did not originate with the LDS church, but were believed and promoted by many Protestant churches in the 1800s (even causing a schism in the Baptist Church), and such ideas apparently predate this time. I spent quite a bit of time a couple of years ago in a Lutheran church and they had a huge bible timeline/ family tree/migrations chart up on the wall showing plainly the descendants of Ham being Africans. But for sake of argument: what if the descendants of Cain were dark-skinned? What if the descendants of Ham were Africans? Firstly: does that prove that the "mark" was a dark skin color? I would say no. Secondly, in our church we believe "that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam's transgression." I think this can be understood in a more general sense that no man is responsible for the sons of his forbearers. So, even if Africans are descended from Ham (which there's no absolute proof of) this does not justify racism, slavery, or any kind of prejudice or bigotry or mistreatment towards them.

To single out mormons is a bit unfair. Also, re Enoch, do you remember what Cain's curse was ? "A fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth." It was God who separated the "seed of Cain" from others. The BoM is very anti-slavery, despite those people having the old testament laws on the keeping and management of slaves.

What the Book of Mormon clearly adds to the Book of Revelation, and takes away from it. Revelation says Jesus Christ is coming back. It says that he's going to defeat all of his enemies, and cast them into the Lake of Fire. And it says those of us who are True Believers will live on the new Heaven and new earth that God will create for us. It says that we will live eternally with him. It does not say that we are going to be gods of our own worlds that we will create. There's a definite conflict between the Book of Revelation in the Book of Mormon. And why would I want to trust a false prophet who says that he's a prophet, but brings no miracles. The things that Jesus Christ said and did prove he was a profit. He claimed to be God several times. So much so that people picked up stones to throw at him to kill him for blaspheming saying that he is God.

@@iroh8946 Deuteronomy 12 said to not “add to” or modify. There is a difference between God adding to His own word and mankind adding to or taking away from it. To know if God has added to it, one would need to know if the person adding to it was a prophet of God. If the person IS a prophet, one can know it the same way Israel knew that Moses was the prophet. Numbers 12-14 and Deuteronomy 18 are examples of that. Every prophet that came forth in the Old testament “added to” scripture revealed from on high because God commanded it. Also, since revelation was not the last book written in the Bible (though placed at the last part of the Bible over time) it would be an addition. But an addition that God Himself sanctioned.
