But what he meant but articulated poorly is that NBA Champions are not World Champions because in as much as it is the best league and the NBA Champions are arguably the best team in the world, it is still a domestic competition except for a few teams in Canada instead of a global one. The Olympics are a indeed an international competition with athletes to representing different countries. So that makes the winner of the Olympics in effect world champions.
