Spirit of the Game exhibit A: Bairstow attempted the exact same thing by trying to catch Marnus Labuschagne stepping out of his crease two days ago. Spirit of the Game exhibit B: England coach Brendon McCullum has three instances of identical dismissals. Spirit of the Game exhibit C: Broad edging a ball to slip but refusing to walk, an edge the English quick has since admitted to. Spirit of the Game exhibit D: England keeper Ben Foakes stumping Irishman Andy Balbirnie after holding onto the ball for a far greater amount of time than what Carey did. Spirit of the Game exhibit E: The MCC long room behaved disgracefully. Not surprisingly three MCC members are now suspended. Spirit of the Game exhibit F: The crowd chanting that Australians are cheaters. Actually the only person convicted of cheating in this series is England's Moeen Ali. Spirit of the Game exhibit G: England bowling 'Bodyline' on day 4, for a record 98% short balls. Also extremely boring to watch - the opposite of so-called "bazball" entertainment. I won't add Duckett not walking re Starc's catch, because we respect that rules are rules. I also won't add England's controversial win over New Zealand in the World Cup final involving Stokes himself as there's been no shortage of comments about that.

He was constantly leaving the crease and as a professional wicket keeper he should be aware of this and be responsible in the crease. No excuses justify his negligence as a wicketkeeper. If he did the same thing, there were the same intention ie to make batsmen out but he was not as lucky. Now it happens to him and it’s well under the rule, so he is clearly out. He needs to learn from it and be careful in future particularly as a wicketkeeper and since he has tried it few times as well. Bdw, I’m not Australian fan nor English. Long-time cricket fan and writer/editor here. The "spirit of cricket" has always been a noble lie. Think about it: when did it actually enter the game? It wasn't there at its inception when Spofforth was punching Poms on the proboscis and Grace was steadfastly staying at the wicket even after being given out. In the 1930s this elusive "spirit" of unknown provenance was being invoked by the Aussie press as Larwood tactically tore the Aussies apart at Jardine's request. For a while, bowling bumpers at tail-enders was frowned upon because it violated the fabulous spirit of the game, but this "unspoken law" was soon dispensed with if that tail-ender was presumptuous enough to flout that "spirit" and score a run too many. Once, Lindwall knocked a man out with a bouncer because he insultingly took block outside of his crease. Trueman was hardly a paragon of puritanical rectitude and was proud of it. "Mad" Jack Flavell didn't protest his sobriquet. He wanted to destroy every man be bowled at. Let's test the spirit. What exactly has been the greatest threat to it - just so we know its location? What was the boundary situation? Was it the abovementioned Bodyline series? What Jardine did was within the rules. It was mainly the Aussie press who demonised and denounced him and Larwood, using the "spirit of the game" as their high horse. Was it Vinoo Mankad in 1947-48, who noticed non-striker Bill Brown backing up too far? Instead of releasing the ball, he stopped and broke the wicket. He’d sufficiently warned Bill, having already dismissed him likewise in a tour game, yet the huffing press almost labelled it impertinence, ensuring his name entered cricket’s lexicon as a byword for dishonesty. But do you know why Mankad was so "impertinent"? Because he was sick of his own countrymen deferring to the Aussies and the English. Those who dusted off the "spirit of cricket" back then actually had their pens at the ready to criticise ANY bowling from those funny little Subcontinental people that amounted to more than a mere tribute offering. Was India's decades-old doctoring of pitches a violation of this "spirit"? What about the West Indies' real and implied threats of on-field, and sometimes off-field, violence to batsmen all over the Commonwealth when they were at their zenith? It seems that this "spirit" includes acceptable cheating. Adam Gilchrist was actually criticised by many of these same upholders of cricket's "spirit" when he decided he WOULD walk, despite being the only man on the field to know he'd nicked it. A batsman was actually somehow acting within the bounds of this amorphous thing called cricket's spirit when he never admitted he was out. It's rather indefinable really, isn't it, old chaps, this "spirit"? Honestly, Piers and Geoffrey and the Lord's members look and sound like dribbling, drivelling privileged Pommy prats when they long for a fantasy bygone era and talk about tarnishing a game that was never exempt from human nature, and ceased being some kind of pastoral idyll the moment men like Spofforth and Grace entered the scene, bringing spectators with them. 1 Reply
@paulpiper9696 Жыл бұрын
One of the oldest cases of cheating I have ever read about in the entire history of cricket was during the third and deciding Test in the 1882-3 series in Sydney, which you alluded to..... So that's my earliest recorded acts of cheating and were acted out by Australia. Australia’s number one bowler, Fred Spofforth, went to the incredulous lengths of inserting metal blades in the heels of his boots and ran down the pitch in his follow through. Cutting up the wicket from one end he then brazenly switched ends and bowled into the rough which he had deliberately caused. England were incensed: their captain the Honourable Ivo Bligh wrote a letter to his father saying Spofforth “cut up the wicket more disgracefully than I have ever seen done before” and “our fellows were naturally very angry about it.” Officially he made no complaints as he did not wish to antagonise his hosts, the Melbourne Cricket Club, who had funded the actual tour. The Australian players claimed the England bowler Dick Barlow had started this practice of cutting up the pitch during their tour of England the previous summer but this was proven to be completely fallacious and mendacious. After England won that Test in Sydney and the inaugural Ashes series 2-1 the Australians then engaged in 'heavy pushing and shoving' which was led by Spofforth. Throughout the pages of history Australia have gone far beyond the envelope and no longer understand the essence of integrity and sportsmanship. Australia aptly has the tag as the world's worst winners and the world's worst losers. And still today it's a county that refuses to even look at the toxic levels of racism that it allows to flourish ostentatiously on the pitch and in the stands.

Funny how a legitimate stumping isn't within the 'spirit of the game', but 'booing' the opposition for it is. Ill-informed, lagered up louts who only care about the 'spirit of the game' when it suits them. Hypocrisy in the extreme. As for the champagne-sipping silver foxes in the long room - they are beyond contempt.

The rule says he is out. But if this is the rule the keeper should throw the ball at the stumps after every ball. Who knows if the batter will leave his crease of lift his bat up by accident.

you don't bowl a Yorker everytime, you Bowl it when you think there's an opportunity to get a wicket.

Thought this was fair enough although still a bit 'unsportsman' like). We used to play a 'Trick' in School Boy Cricket in The 1980's where I at first slip would run to Boundary pretending that Wicket keeper had missed the ball. When Batsmen ran Keeper would take then bails off. "Officially Run Out or Stumped" Worked Everytime ...... Now that was a Dodgey Play. LOL. Although I as Captain usually called the Dismissed batsmen Back. We were just playing a joke, which worked everytime.

Worked every time? You must have gone to a special school champ, that wouldn't have worked once at my school. We were taught to watch the ball at all times until the keeper throws it to a fielder.

"Whinging pommies, can't play cricket" " Whinging pommies ,always whinging" . What a bunch of hypocrites, ok for Bairstow to try it,against the spirit of the game when Australia try it, and like cricket are better at it.

When lyon came out to bat with one leg then England also should ve bowled him slow half folly’s but they didn’t. In some way they also broke the spirit of the game . Spirit of the game is pretty subjective. Either it should be mentioned in the cricket rule book before each and every law otherwise it will always be used with convenience

Incredible that this caused so much bitterness. Bairstow lost concentration. When you lose concentration as a batter, you tend to get out. That's it.

What is this "Spirit of the Game?" Cricket is a professional sport. The players are paid a phenomenal amount of money, and therefore should know the Laws, and Rules, of the game. If you are out of your crease, and the end of the over has not been called, and the ball breaks the wicket, you are out, end of story.

What about a time in India when Rahul Dravid was given out caught behind by Adam Gilchrist off the bowling of Andrew Symonds how can that wicket be claimed when it clearly shows that Dravid NEVER hit the ball and his bat is behind his pad. So double standards Aussies claiming wickets they know they should never have got. And another example of that waa when Kumar Sangakkara was given out caught by Ponting close to his double hundred in Adelaide the ball clearly hits Sangakkara on the shoulder without it touching his bat. So what do you all have to say to that then.
