Can we just get one thing straight about the N64: the cartridges might have been a poor business decision, but they were a great decision from a gaming perspective. My lasting first impression of the PS1 and Saturn back in 1995 was that there was a lot of waiting on loading screens, and this at times made it difficult to enjoy. And although the N64's textures were low-res and blurry at times, I still prefer that to the unfiltered textures of the PS1 games sandpapering my eyeballs. Some PS1 titles still managed to look great despite it (Metal Gear Solid), but many have aged way worse than most N64 titles.

I... I have mixed feelings about the N64. It has a handful of standout titles for sure, and it technically had the better graphics compared to it's competition. On the flip side of the coin, if you didn't have friends or family to play with regularly the library really suffered, and those "better" graphics came at the cost of frame rate and clarity. Only SM64 is at 30 fps and only F-Zero X is at 60 fps, every other game is a 20 fps capped slideshow and every game looked like it had vaseline smeared across the screen, so it was a blurry slideshow at that.

if you keep up the quality of videos brother this channel will just grow. Great work man. N64 is one of my favorite consoles. Also Majoras Mask required the expansion pack to play. If it wasn't installed you would get an error screen.

The hardware was promising. Games were severely held back by primitive cartridges.

I heard a long time ago that Donkey kong 64 needed the extra ram due to a glitch that Rare employees didn't know how to fix, a glitch that didn't happen with the expansion pack. So they shipped the thing in every box of the game because it wouldn't work otherwise

Very well done! I did not have an N64 growing up. I had a Saturn but I had a friend who had an N64 and loved playing Mario Kart 64. Now I have an N64 and it is permanently hooked up to my main TV. I enjoy discovering new games I missed out on back in the day. I run an S-video cable to an HD upscaler and the games look great on my HDTV. The games are just fun an that never goes out of style plus the system is bullet proof and just works each time I turn it on and the carts are very durable and best of all I don't have to worry about downloading updates. Just plug and play. Keep up the great work!

It’s a great system! I also use an upscaler with my TV, but these consoles really look their best on a CRT TV.

As some called "primitive" cartridges but Nintendo knew that a system with no load times was superior at the time. They knew technology was not quiet there yet with cd-rom's for minimum loads times; hence why it took until game cube to switch over.

Everyone wanted ps one big reason was you could burn disc's with a chip installed to console. They were the good old days.

if you take a cartridge apart, there is a TON of room in them .... why did they not put more than 64? was it a cost issue? I know the system can run cartridges with more than that.. I have an everdrive with 128gb card in it.
@franciscoferreiravlogsКүн бұрын
That’s a great question. I also own an Everdrive X7. I think that it more than likely was a cost issue at the time.
@Supervocetubeia64Күн бұрын
Although 128gb (or larger) cards can be used, the maximum rom size is still 64MB on these everdrives. Games aren't loaded directly from the MicroSD. Instead, when you choose a game from the menu, it's loaded to the SDRAM chip which is physically limited to 64MB. If someone tried to make a homebrew game or rom hack that's larger than 64MB, it wouldn't work.

I remember they said on the news or something that it was designed like that so your parents could hold the controller at the same time. The untrust in gaming developers during the n64. lol
@franciscoferreiravlogsКүн бұрын
I never knew that! Didn’t realize that it could’ve been a secondary reason for designing the controller that way.

Nintendo64 cartridges can still be found in very good shape! Cd's are prone to scratches and datarot. So Nintendo64 games will survive
@jaredt259016 сағат бұрын
The systems to play them require drives with moving parts, cartridges are boards that plug into a master board and is just all electrical circuits. As long as a voltage that is too high doesn’t go through them or the circuit isn’t broken it’ll all last forever.

Majora's Mask needs the expansion pack to function. Would get you an error otherwise.

@jaredt259016 сағат бұрын
Wow, that’s bad. I know Castlevania 2 and some other 3rd party games need it but a first party game needing that is a real slap in the face to console owners. My family could afford one back then but if you couldn’t you should be able to play Zelda.
@danielordonez412Күн бұрын
quantity matters only to some. The Ps1 obviously has both quantity and quality, but if you plan to have a library of 10 to 20 games.. the N64 shines in quality and personality. Third party support? talk about Rare,Akklaim, Capcom and Konami.. not too many titles from them but enough of those that matter a lot to me. If Symphony of the Night has a cult of followers, No one will ever see something like Ocarina of Time ever rise again
@franciscoferreiravlogsКүн бұрын
Agreed! Nintendo 64 games (and GameCube games, even) looked very unique. I’d say Nintendo really made the most of their hardware by stylizing their games in ways that allow them to age much more nicely than those on other consoles.
@casualSeth21 сағат бұрын
A couple of things. 1st, you talk about the N64 analog stuck as though Nintendo shipped poorly functioning controls that were hard to use. Brand new, the sticks are very smooth and comfortable but unfortunately do not last over the years. 2nd- i had high hopes for this channel but you're just rehashing the same info that a million other channels have. If your format was unique or interesting that would be fine but as it is, it's at best a meh. Good production quality though.
@jaredt259016 сағат бұрын
The initial stick is bad, you can find after market controllers with good analogue sticks but the original one is terrible. It’s amazing to me that Hiroshi Yamauchi, the old head of the company let it go to market. He was known for having very high standards and striking down tech that wasn’t up to the level already established. The gameboy could have come out earlier but the screen to get the contrast that was satisfactory took until then.
@casualSeth11 сағат бұрын
Im not going to argue a matter of opinion with someone that probably wasn't even born when the N64 came out let alone experienced the controller on release. Time has not been good to the sticks but new, they're good.
@Whirlybird889 сағат бұрын
@@jaredt2590 Actually a lot of people don't like after market controllers because the original design is optical, and therefore much more precise than modern stick technology. The biggest problem is that the internal parts were never greased at the factory. They can last a very long time with a bit of proper grease.

To think Nintendo screwed Sony, but Sony had the last laugh!
@greenmachine548720 сағат бұрын
If you thoroughly research it, you'll find that Sony was trying to screw Nintendo, so Nintendo did the right thing by backing out of the SNES CD deal. Unfortunately, there was a stipulation that prevented Nintendo from making CD games for some time, which is why they had to use cartridges for the 64.
