Paranormal Activity Movie Description:
Soon after moving into a suburban tract home, Katie (Katie Featherston) and Micah (Micah Sloat) become increasingly disturbed by what appears to be a supernatural presence. Hoping to capture evidence of it on film, they set up video cameras in the house but are not prepared for the terrifying events that follow.
Paranormal Activity is a 2007 American supernatural horror film produced, written, directed, photographed and edited by Oren Peli. It centers on a young couple (Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat) who are haunted by a supernatural presence inside their home. They then set up a camera to document what is haunting them. The film uses found-footage conventions that were mirrored in the later films of the series.
Originally developed as an independent feature and given film festival screenings in 2007, the film was shot for $15,000. It was then acquired by Paramount Pictures and modified, particularly with a new ending that cost an additional $200,000. It was given a limited U.S. release on September 25, 2009, and then a nationwide release on October 16, 2009. The film earned nearly $108 million at the U.S. box office and a further $85 million internationally for a worldwide total of $194 million. Paramount/DreamWorks acquired the U.S. rights for $350,000. It is often cited as the most profitable film ever made, based on proportionate return on investment, although such figures are difficult to verify independently as this is likely to exclude marketing costs.
The film is the first entry in the Paranormal Activity film series. A parallel sequel, Paranormal Activity 2, was released in 2010. The success of the first two films would spawn additional films in the series: the prequel Paranormal Activity 3 in 2011, and sequel to the second film, Paranormal Activity 4 in 2012. The fifth installment and spin-off, The Marked Ones, was released in 2014, and the sixth installment, The Ghost Dimension, was released in 2015. A video game, The Lost Soul, was released in 2017, while a seventh film, Next of Kin, was released in 2021.

Fun Fact: This film was made for $15K, and it made over $194.2 million at the box office. It’s the most profitable film ever made.

Well, kinda, I guess. It may be the most successful movie when it comes to return on investment, I don't actually know, but it sounds reasonable, but there are plenty of movies that have made more than a $194 million profit.

@@TheOdMan movie profitability is typially ranked with respect to budget (roi), as opposed to highest grossing rankings which is just a ranking of which movies made the most money regardless of budget. Paranormal Activity is indeed #1 in profitability, having made 12,946x it's budget, as opossed to the highest grossing movie ever, Avatar (2009), which made less than 10x its budget. Which means Paranormal Activity was over 12,000 times more profitable an investment than Avatar.

Mica was the most absolute ANNOYING character ever in a horror movie. She may have had that ghost around her her whole life, but because she never tried to antagonize it, she lived. It wasn't until Micah kept poking the bear and not taking anything seriously that shit hit the fan.

@@ShaunSum49I don't know if it was a video I watched, but I remember something mentioning that the entity transferred to Katie's house. I don't know the timeline of these events and the other paranormal where you see Katie's sister, her husband, daughter and baby boy. I think the video mentioned something about Katie's sister transferring the entity to someone else, but it went to Katie, and then since the entity wanted a baby boy, but Katie and her sister had been all girls. The deal where the boy was going to be taken started to fulfill (?). So, the entity haunted them. I don't know if they (Katie and her sister) were being haunted at the same time. Also, weren't Katie's parents k1l|3d? I think they were also kidnapped by the woman (WHO I think made the deal with a demon) that was part of the cult or a witch.

I noticed that you have one of the original alternate endings for Paranormal Activity in the thumbnail. There were two other endings the filmmakers originally filmed for the movie. The first has Katie killing Micah in the kitchen and then returning to the bedroom alone with the knife in her hand, sitting on the floor next to the bed until morning when the police arrive. When the police enter the house and find Micah's body in the kitchen, Katie awakens from her trance as the police enter the bedroom. She begins to scream and ask where Micah is while the police order her to drop the knife, but when she approaches them they open fire, killing her. The second version shows Katie returning to the bedroom with the knife in her hand after killing Micah, then looking into the camera and slitting her own throat, killing herself. Both versions are available in the DVD deleted scenes. It was Steven Spielberg himself who suggested the ending the filmmakers ultimately settled on.

What I loved about this film was the tension. The fact that things aren't escalating right away, the fact that scares start off subtle, is what I found disturbing. In m opinion slow build tension is much scarier than constant jumpscares and "action", that passes in a second, but the lingering feeling of something not being quite right, of looking all over that room wondering what is going to happen (if anything), is what heightened the tensions for me. I in no way found this film boring, as I like the slow burn in a genuinely scary film. When I went to bed the first night watching this every little noise in my house had a different meaning, and I am someone who loves horror films and rarely gets scared of them. The atmosphere of this film is what did it for me.

Part one and part two are really good. It's not a scary movie, but it left me thinking, "what really happens when I'm asleep?" That's what these types of movies do. SPOILER ALERT FOR THE SEQUELS: Buuuut, I never notice that Micah makes the joke at the beginning, "shouldn't let your mother come over anymore..." but their mother died at the end of the third film, while they were little girls. So it was strange to rewatch and hear that joke because wouldn't he know her mother is dead, and thus, that joke wouldn't be funny? Or, was it a continuity error?
@beautifulbliss5883

I'm thinking continuity error, I don't think they had planned to make a sequel much less a franchise. They just wanted to make a small film
@Cute_PurpleRose

They did kinda fix that error in the ghost dimension by saying they were brain washed to forget about what happened to their mom and another woman took care of them and they thought that was their mom
@acerbictriangle987
@acerbictriangle987 Жыл бұрын
@@Cute_PurpleRose Thanks for clarifying that ... I only saw Ghost Dimension once, and basically forgot the whole thing because I thought it was so bad. But that definitely explains it. Makes sense that they'd been brainwashed, as they were so young when she died, and I think their grandmother raised them within the coven after their mother was gone.
@nataliedunn5239
@nataliedunn5239 Жыл бұрын
In my opinion (and it is only my opinion) horror is not the jumpscare, horror is the tension built before the jumpscare. The jumpscare is the release of that tension. Anyone can make a horror film with jumpscares, but a film that has genuine tension is harder to come by.

Also glad you're not going to subject yourself to the rest of the Paranormal Activity films -- this one was the best and yeah, it's a lil boring at first, but it does a great job ramping up the tension. It's so fun to hate Micah -- he is effortlessly hateable.

To answer one of your questions, I do believe in psychics! My mom unexpectedly passed away last year, and I went to a psychic. And the details that she told me, that only my mom would know was insane. The way she would phrase things, details that she told. It was amazing. And it was 90 minutes of it. 100% believe in psychics.

Honestly? For me, Paranormal Activity movies are the most boring movies I have ever seen. My bestie said it is scary so we watched together years ago, she freaked out while I kept giggling seeing her reaction and deadpan bored seeing the movie. Maybe it is just me.

My favourite horror movie is one that pretty much nobody talks about and nobody (that I can find) has EVER reacted to it. “Mama”

It was kind of like The Blaire Witch Project. It was a different point of view. It was slow starting off and the horror gradually grew

"have you ever been to a psychic?" I'll do you one better, I AM psychic lol I've had to do cleansings to get spirits out of my family home.. I moved away, came back, and there were like 4 distinct spirits and some roamers everywhere on the property lmaoo

I always thought Micah burned the ouija board. Turns out he burned the cross, which was extremely stupid. However, it turns out he also burned the picture. Should’ve burnt it by itself

This one is petty good. Part 2 has good scare. Part 3 is really well written. Marked Ones has some amazing acting. I haven't seen any of the others.

Yes I'm a reader. I read tarot and enhancing my psychic abilities. All abilities are different. Many get their ideas about everything in life through movies, but movies are entertainment.
