That weapons officer bugged me. A flagship bridge crew are going to be experienced top officers who are likely future command prospects. On the flip the UEE is in decay after the Messer era and was flooded with lots of incompetent people and lately budget cuts. The UEEN is not as respected as it was in its early days and the battle of Vega broke the fleets back and the civilian casualties on the surface were massive and dark day for the UEE. I thought maybe they were playing that up for the change that happens next in politics or just the old trope of that one person in every group that cracks under pressure and becomes a liability. It was pretty good with a few breaks of military form in wild situations. Bishop called Captain Maclaren Rachel because she is also his daughter. That was dad talking the second time lol. Way back in her mocap docu reel she was doing that scene and called him dad in that exchange. I hope the whole game looks this awesome.
@Billy-bc8pk
@Billy-bc8pk Ай бұрын
Yep, that guy annoyed me too, which is good, because it means he was written well in that exchange, and it made Mark Strong come off as a much stronger leader by comparison. Any game that can get you to dislike a character with such little screen time but not in a nonsensical way shows a lot of promise. I just hope the Vanduul are written just as well -- from what little we saw they seem to have great interactions, and hopefully Andy Serkis gets to really chew into his role, because that will make or break how well players feel compelled to fight them.

During my whole time in the Navy, I never ran into anyone who would lose their "stuff" during battle. Not saying your experience is invalid, but I don't think you would be able to get an accurate measure of who would break in a situation as dire as what is depicted in the game: humanity constantly being on the back foot against an existential threat, being the literal last line of defense between that threat and "2 billion souls," and (due to Hollywood/video game space combat rules) having that threat barreling down on you in close visual range.

I was a Sergeant in the US Airborne Infantry, I was obviously thinking the same exact stuff as you on my watch through. It’s fun seeing someone else’s take on it, and how closely it aligns with my own, even being in a different countries military. I did some work with the Canadian military when they came down to train with us, nice group of guys. Edit: I disagree with you on that last part about the Captain addressing the Corporal. Without going into detail, I’ve experienced a scenario out in the “field” where it was only myself and a high ranking individual, and while I obviously maintained decorum he very much just acted like a normal person and treated me as if rank wasn’t even a thing. Obviously once we regrouped with everyone else it was back to normal, but certain leaders can handle a situation like that differently

Yes, and like you said, without details, but yes, that interaction actually seemed normal to me as well. That weapons officer though... Mark Strong should have asked him "Lieutenant, is there a reason I'm still doing your job?" and if he flummoxed around biting at half responses the captain should have sent him to engineering to help run damage control crews until after the battle, then Captain, XO, and Lieutenant should have a long discussion about career opportunities at a Xi'an listening outpost on the ass end of nowhere... but maybe they don't do that in the far future?
@FlynnStrider

Good, strong leaders often inspire even the weakest of soldiers to do their duty to the best of their ability. The fact that the weapons officer had not one but two strong and confident leaders next to him led me to believe he would not have hesitated. The weapons officer has undoubtedly had nearly a decade or more of training throughout his service to be in such a position as to essentially control the 4 massive railguns, and command and control over all of the PDCs and probably had several chiefs under him in charge of other lower enlisted as gunners and loaders of the larger guns. That's honestly why I agree with Noobifier's assessment that in a normal situation, even if he was hesitating, would have said "Yes, sir." and carried out the order. After all, we all know the outcome if we refuse an order or hesitate in a situation like this.

He will show up again somewhere, but not necessarily given an redemption arc. The most likely outcome for him is a quick court marshal resulting in him being thrown out of the navy and jailed, or shipped out to the ass end of nowhere to oversee something totally inconsequential as punishment. Then again he could be a political appointee for all we know, with the political backing necessary to survive. The government in the lore is more akin to ancient Rome than modern governments after all.

Being a former serviceman myself (German Fallschirmjäger) it felt well written, apart from that useless weapons officer and the usual tropes. One note about the call from Bishop to MacLaren and the player is that, the reason why Bishop goes to first name basis, and it hits her so hard, is because she's his Daughter. Outstanding assessment, Noobifier! I concur 100% As a fellow vet, I agree with pretty much all of your points, but there are some things I'm willing to forgive if I can find a way to place them in a different perspective. For example, the weapons officer is young, but if I overlook that, I can easily interpret his reticence and fear to panic. One never knows how they will fair truly until under combat stress and I could see this young man there for whatever reason simply not mentally prepared for this scale of threat. Otherwise, yeah! no argument from me! 🙂

I'd be incredibly surprised if the story throughout the game isn't good. The concept, that we know of, is solid. It's a great foundation for many stories. They have numerous highly regarded and capable actors on board that can deliver. And they have had at least a decade to refine every single aspect of the narrative. It's good to hear there's a solid level of authenticity to this demo. I enjoyed everything they presented and my only complaint is that I won't get to experience it for the first time blind. But that's kind of the nature of following all of this so closely for so long.

While I get the irritation at the weapons officer - I think it was there for a reason (even if a little clumsy). The UEE at the Battle of Vega is a depleted force wracked with nepotism and gutted post the Messers. Pre-regeneration its unlikely anyone with a better option saw it as a pathway to citizenship and there was still lingering displeasure from the public. I think the idea is that even here on the command deck of the Admiral's ship there is incompetence and lack of backbone. Whether that is meant to contrast with the arrival of SQ42 and their rampant execution of prowess or just a general theme through the game we'll need to wait an see. The "Old Man" would seem to be 'that guy' throughout the start of the story at least :D

Visually exquisit and far from being boring but my point is that a cinematic experience as promoted for this game is a bit struggling with gaming. Having a global overview of a battle suits well to a movie, but being part of the battle prevents you from knowing what actions are other than your immediate surroundings. A game like Crysis had a very good visuals for the time and was always glued to the player, even in cutscenes. For sure there is a place for other visions of the narration but playing from time to time may seem unconfortable for a videogame. The shortests parts of your video are the gameplay ones. We quarantined a few hours away at an army base in wisconsin which was weird because we went through part of the process when we arrived and then quarantined for me it was a month 2 weeks and then another 2 weeks because in our pods of 5 one kid tested positive and so we weren't to another quarantine and he went to isolation, what was further strange was my friend shipped a few months before me and he stayed in a hotel for the 2 weeks with 1 other person.. I don't know what changed there but a lot did. After that we arrived on the weekend they werent' processing pday recruits on weekends anymore either like they apparently were before hand i don't know it was a mess in all honesty, they kept changing how fast we were pushed through basic, first it was 4 weeks then 6 weeks back to 4 weeks, the standard time was 8 weeks and after I left I read it went up to 13 weeks or rumored to, I don't actually know now but yeah. Was quarantined a few more times, by the ring of fire we called it, one kid popped positive with covid and anyones rack within 6 feet of eachother which many were all had to quaratntine.. my first division 096 started at 104 recruits, I have no idea how many graduated or dropped due to covid and quarantine, because quarantine on base was different. The drillhall/graduation hall was setup as the quarantine zone, split down the middle one side male the other female, we had 6x6 foot boxes we stayed, because we werent isolation and just quaratine we still followed the same rules and regulations, though revelry was at 0600 for us and 2200 you had to be in your rack, we were not allowed to be in our racks so we had a metal chair we could sit in. We still had watch and food was delivered a cold sandwhich and fruit and drink usually and then dinner we were given random mres, we weren't supposed to leave our little box unless it was going to the head during the specified times or we had watch, some RDCs were more lax so to speak and ignored when we would trade some items from our mres with other nearby recruits so long as we kept quiet, to which speaking was also pretty much not allowed you could whisper sometimes to other recruits right next to you or across from you but it had to remain quiet. After graduation we waited for when we could be sent off to our respective schools, my rate was IS so west virginia for A and C school... anyways im rambling but one thing I learned being in was that certain things definitely changed what would normally happen, we always heard how the army had access to their phones at times, wasn't allowed for us we had to purchase cards with minutes on them and outside of the required calls which was less than a minute for when we arrived when we graduated. We also heard they were allowed to go back during Christmas I don't know how true most of that was to be honest, but considering my thanksgiving and christmas were in a 6x6 foot box...well.. you can imagine.

My problem is with some of the radio comms. I know in the US Army 2 decades ago when I was in we didn't ask "Whats your SITREP?" It would just be shortened to, "Callsign, SITREP?". I didn't understand why Bishop had to whisper in the middle of the fight. In the middle of a fire fight you can't hear shit, whispering is stupid, even more on a ship IN SPACE!

My biggest criticism is that they stopped the MAV’s from moving on the hornets in the opening sequence, sacrilege!! 😂

I think that Chris Roberts' time in Holywood has definitley helped in the development of Sq42. He may not have had massive successes in the movie side but the experience and lessons he's learned over the years in both industries are certainly apparent.

I think, if it was our modern navy who hadn't seen ship-to-ship combat in like 70 years, I would find that officer believable. But a military like this that has been fighting Vanduul hordes for a hundred years wouldn't tolerate that. They wouldn't be able to afford it. I think it didn't pull me out so much because I was thinking "I believe that", but then I realized my mistake: this isn't the UEE Navy's first battle of the war after 70 years of lapse. Then it bugged me more. I'm a combat arms vet. That shit doesn't fly in combat arms, but I see it all the time in garrison troops, especially since Iraq cooled down, but in a world like SC, navy isn't the garrison post that it is now.

Actually you just explained why it likely happened. It is because at this point the UEE was basically gutted in terms of funding and support, most were very young here younger than they should be generally speaking. It is likely desperation to fill empty seats, granted its a minor scene

Exactly what I thought about the lousy weapons officer! But loved that whole prologue nevertheless - that's what I've been waiting for since 10 years now and at least two more. 😎👍

Jebus Cripes NOOB! After Chris watches this, he's going to want to reshoot the whole interaction with the weapons' officer and the captain (so as to have him removed from his post and sent to the brig). Now Squadron 42 is going to take another 2 years after the 2 years they just announced last week! So because of you, we're into 2028 before repolish is even going to start! :P Good vid and apt anaylsis. Canuck

@TheNOOBIFIER1337 U gave me a random thought. I would love to see a scene where a DAY ONE new recuit fresh from basic. He was in a similar fleet falling apart fight scene and seeing how others in the fleet would treat the new recuit.

Excellent synopsis. That Weapons Officer should have immediately been relieved, pending disciplinary action, and a replacement ordered to the bridge. That bit upset my suspension of disbelief, and almost ruined the story for me, though the Captain was otherwise very professional.
