During Tony's HUD business scam, Carmine Lupertazzi and John "Johnny Sac" Sacrimoni became jealous of his lucrative scheme. Because of this tensions rose between the two families resulting in negotiations and lots of lost money on both hands. It was clear that Sacrimoni was losing money quickly and something needed to change in order for him to become more financially stable. His solution, to whack Carmine and take over as boss. But this never panned out thanks to Soprano bailing last minute due to high risk high reward situation. Which brings up the question, why was John so eager when it came to taking out Carmine. Was he setting up Tony and going to frame everyone in New Jersey?

One thing I found funny about this situation was when chris was just out of rehab, Tony put the carmine hit on his shoulders. And Chris tells Tony that that Johnny is sneaky and could be up to something. Tony writes him off, but Chris was pretty insightful at times, especially during the rare moments when he was sober

The thing that makes me think he was tricking Tony is that he was very, very ready to give in to all of Tony's demands. He didn't even try to bargain or negotiate. That suggests to me that he knew that deal was not going to be upheld.
@levy9595
@levy9595 10 ай бұрын
Good point, but it's also possible that he was fully aware that all of Tony's demands were pittance compared to the windfall he'd gain as boss. He'd presumably get to take complete control of construction plus all of Carmine Sr's other money makers, which as the show explains, were very significant.

You could tell as the series went on that Tony was starting to see right through John. Hence, why he pretty much stopped doing John favors. Personally I think John’s intentions were to get rid of Carmine and weather the storm to become boss, and would try to protect Tony. However as we’ve seen throughout the series, John was like a master chess player who would adapt to the situation and if needs be, and his hand was forced, he’d definately have a plan to convince the other families that Tony was solely responsible for Carmine’s death

The funniest parts of the series it Tony pretending he's going to go to war with the largest strongest family in New York. He got 30 men mabey 60 with associates. Lupertazzi got over 200 soldiers alone. They had to almost break the story to give Tony a chance those last few episodes.

Didn't break the story. Phil was a pain in the ass and the Lupertazi fam had enough of it. Besides it seemed like Phil might take out Butchie later on with the phone comment he made and so Butchie might have been trying to save his own ass. In the end they didn't have to fight 200 soldiers, if they went all out on a murder war the cops and Feds would have stomped them. So all they had to do really was kill Phil.

I feel like a lotta people just really don't understand the complexity of these schemes, the real size and power of of the DiMeo family, and how difficult it is to swap one boss out for another, especially in Tony's situation where he's both taking kick-ups and has a ton of his own things running. The Lupertazzi family relied heavily on the Sopranos (and in many ways Tony in particular) rather they wanted to admit it or not. And despite the arrogant talk in back rooms, it was pretty obvious nobody actually wanted war with em either cause their family was much bigger than we ever get to see (we only see T's inner circle, but almost none of the other, bigger crews, up and comers, wannabes, young guns, associates who can't technically be made, etc) and with the outside help from Naples, other families in other parts of the country, and other syndicates entirely, they punch well above their weight as it is. It's easy to see in how the NY guys were always tryna keep em on their own side or neutral in conflicts. That's why I feel like someone, or even a group (like Patsy, pre-snitching Carlo, possibly even Pauly) had to have come to em (Butchie) at the end and sold em on their ability to pick up where Tony left off since there was no way the public execution of a boss could ever be let stand. It took several extremes and Phil gettin emotionally invested for anything to ever go beyond threats and indirect strikes. For that reason, no, I didn't think he was actually tryna set Tony up. I think it was more that there was already tension so his alibis was right there and if he never pressed a button it could be assumed that Jersey did it and acted alone. But at least up to the Billy hit, maybe the Joey Peeps hit, and hell, maybe all the way to the end, he'd have rather had Tony as boss to work with than anybody else. He just knew he needed someone from outside to pull the trigger and should the other families get really upset and do something about it Tony would be the target instead of him. I think it was more that it was a potential cost he was willing to pay more than what he wanted. But mostly I think he just wanted his own hands clean and the blowback headed somewhere else should it come more than anything. Indirectly I guess it could end up being a set-up either way, but I don't really think that's what was intended. It was just an acceptable possible outcome that was preferable to a replay of Costellano.

Ehhh. The Lupertazzis definitely could have crushed Tony’s family outright if they wanted to. It was said throughout the series they had over 200 made men, the DiMeos never had nearly as many, even if counting associates (which the Lupertazzis also probably had exponentially more than 200 if counting their associates too). Would Naples really be willing to send over their soldiers to partake in a WAR? We saw how reluctant they were to allow Tony to take Furio, and the only other time Tony can get their people over are to do isolated hits.

The real life mob family the DiMeo Family was based on (DeCavalcante Family), was a somewhat "unofficial" sixth family and treated as such. NJ was a huge moneymaker for the mob as the majority of NY contractors actually reside in NJ and not NY. The DeCavalcante & Gambino Family were pretty much joined at the hip and the Lupertazzi family is representative of the Gambino Family in the series. The DeCavalcante family had around 100 total members (made men & associates). The Gambino's had around 150-200 made guys plus over 1,500 associates so you can see how a war between the two would turn out in reality.

After the Castellano hit took place, the Gotti/Gravano faction told the other families they didn't know who did it, but were investigating and would find out. The Lucchese's and Genovese were the only families to move against Gotti and all they did was plant 1 bomb that took out Frank DeCicco and maybe one could argue Gaspipe's hit on Eddie Lino was partially due to the Castellano hit, but for the most part it was 'The King is dead, long live the King'. So Johnny Sac wouldn't necessarily NEED a fall guy. Its family business, if there's no evidence leading to who did it and if the whole family is ok with following a new boss, then that's probably good enough for the commission.

Certainly plausible. Given that Tony was also very useful to John over the years, however, one could argue that John would rather have kept Tony alive while he proved useful. But that goes against another character arc of John, that he slowly shifted from being a "pragmatist" to being a greedy hardhead, and I think John as the latter would be more willing to throw Tony to the wolves to engross himself.

At the end of season 5 Johnny and Tony are talking about putting an end to the Phil and Tony B beef and Johnny feeling Tony's apprehension tells Tony that he's not going to do anything to Tony while Jeanie is in the house. If John moves to take out Tony, the next jersey boss would be unable to trust him and it causes more friction. Johnny best case a scenario is to keep Tony where he is. Same, I never really saw him any more “weasely” or slimey than any of the other degenerate characters on the show. Man was just out to get money and not get whacked, which he did fairly well, considering he died in a hospital with his wife and daughter. The worst thing he did was threaten to torture Tony B. I would even argue his morality with how he loved and stood up for his wife, and didn’t rat when he got arrested

This was definitely a set up because if you want someone to do a favour for you, you would want to make the deal worthwhile for that person to do that favour for you. All John said when asked by Tony "what will you do for me?" was "I'll take a sad song and make it better" and Tony himself had to bring up a proposal that future construction projects will have to be done in his favour even though John is asking for help. In addition, John still wanted to whack Carmine after he settled the matter which makes no sense because why would you whack a guy even after a matter has been settled? If Tony actually went through with whacking Carmine, John would then talk to the other bosses and get them to think Tony acted alone in regards to whacking Carmine and then Tony would be hit because in that life, "dead men tell no tales" and this mentality would surface because John doesn't want to risk Tony ever letting the 4 other families know that John conspired to whack Carmine.

It wasn't a setup but Tony was right when he said he was "taking all of the risk". If things worked out and there was no retaliation from any of the other families then Johnny would be the boss and profit financially as would Tony. If things didn't go well and the finger got pointed at the North Jersey Family then Tony could be whacked by the other families and Johnny Sack could play the fool and blame Tony as well. And he would still likely be boss if Tony was killed. The risk was all on Tony.

I love these sorts of presentations because you see from them how deeply people regard what could just be dismissed as a TV show. I think that ultimately Johnny and Tony were pals because they made up just before Johnny got pinched by the FBI and thus began Johnny's downfall, but it was a 51% situation -- just 1% over an even split and 2% beyond going the other way.

Makes sense after the scene where he and Tony are in the hardware store and Tony basically calls all the shots to where he would be making major money off of their shared ventures while John would be making less than half and in the HUD scam, nothing at all... John was one of my favorites, still is, but after seeing this series like 6 times over (on S6 of the 6th watch) my views from johnny being cool and collected and stand-up faded and I saw he was really just greedy, hot headed, overly emotional, and a sneak (but he sure can smoke a cigarette cooler than anyone else... Well, idk, Michael Madsen as Mr Blonde in Reservoir Dogs is up there too). However, I never thought of the Carmine hit as a set-up against Tony, but given all the money he just simply have up on when negotiating with Tony in the store, it seems probable that John intended on seeing Tony and his glorified crew vanish in the near future, thus irrigating all claims to Tony's HUD business back to John; good video and a good theory. Throughout my watches I've also had a change of opinion about Paulie too, but that's for another time.

I think he just wanted to keep his hands clean learning from the gotti takeover, although there weren’t really any repercussions of it. It also would create some dissent with tony and little carmine which would give John a leg up on any issues that would come up money wise with tony as he wouldn’t have a strong ally when it came to decisions or a buffer. It’s more for power although that could have definitely backfired and showed a weakness on his part not stepping up and with the pride a New York family has in leadership. I definitely thought tony should have stayed out of it period. Maybe consulted John by allowing use of his out of town (Italy) connections and making it so tony knew, but his hands were clean thus strengthening his bargaining chip on any and all ventures going forward.
