Btw I knew of this case and it's definitely very suspicious. Thanks to your awesome video for helping me remember this case. I'm curious of when and where investigators 1st seen their car? You know the one they had to put the siphoned gas in! If their car was nowhere to be found in relations to where he was last seen then maybe there never was two cars there. Maybe they robbed and killed him. That's why the ignition was punched and why 6 hours had past before calling the authorities. They needed that time to stage the seen!

I’d guess they had some sort of other unknown affiliate set him up for a robbery gone wrong. I grew up around drug addicts. I had friends who were dealers. On multiple occasions, a “friend” of one of the dealers would orchestrate some sort of deal or meet-up where they would rob/assault them, either by themselves or with a 3rd party. When he died from an OD his "friends" showed up periodically throughout the day while we were cleaning out the place to try stealing his tools or anything else of value. They all claimed to be "like his best friend bro, I totally let him borrow that air compressor."

I think Earl's "friends" killed him, maybe over drugs. They then used his vehicle to go to a that remote location for whatever reason. One of them lost Earl's keys and tried to hot-wire the vehicle but failed. Freaking out, she took off. The others decided to make up a story about Earl disappearing. Since his body was nowhere near the area the cops never found anything. At least that is my 2 cents worth. I could be wrong but I am positive that they all know a lot more than they are saying.

This one just reeks of foul play. Although we don't have all the pieces to puzzle here I think it's pretty safe to say we aren't dealing with something mysterious here. In the frame of S&R this is a relatively small search area and nothing of the missing was unearthed. Earl simply wasn't there for this half-baked gold panning adventure. Every detail of this story points to foul play.

They wouldn’t have felt confident going through his home looting it in broad daylight - also, siphoning his gas, destroying the ignition trying to steal his truck, then stealing the cellphone and leaving knowing he had no way back etc - even addicts don’t do those things unless they knew he wasn’t capable of coming back. The only reason Jessica came forward was bc after her sister called 911 from the phone she thought they’d track it back to her especially if/when they found his body and she didn’t want to get blamed on her own or to insert herself to find out what the cops knew. They should have put the pressure on her - she’d have spilled like a stuffed Thanksgiving turkey 🦃

I'm of two minds. These addicts were a mess, so I can't see them being able to withstand vigorous questioning by the police. These were people that ran out of gas multiple times in one trip, these are not master criminals. Either they weren't involved in his disappearance, or they were not questioned sufficiently. Based upon what we have in this video, I tend to lean towards the latter. Sounds to me like the cops wrote this one off as soon as they could. In their minds it was probably just another junkie who went missing, and the only witnesses were other junkies, the cops probably didn't care to put anymore effort into it than they already had.

Foul play. They told police no booze or drugs but empty containers at camp. Said were panning for gold, but equipment untouched. Keys stolen. Gas stolen. Attempted car theft. Apartment looted. I'm guessing the victim died in a different location (medical issue? accident? homicide?) Then his "friends" (who needs enemies?) take his vehicle to the camp site. But the there is a dispute, so someone leaves with the car keys. - This would be my guess if something like this happened in my area. I don't know anything about this incident except from this video.

I don't know on this one, having known a lot of addicts, most of them wouldn't kill someone but would jump on their possessions as soon as he so much as let's his guard down. Add on that he is a bipolar addict in a state known for intoxicated people wandering off and dissapearing. It sounds really bad against his friends at first but when you add in the bias I am sure Alaska cops have against drug users it isn't a clear cut case of foul play as it may first seem, I mean if the cops had ANYTHING solid on them, even circumstancialy I am sure they'd be in cuffs.

Seems to me that we have a situation in which a junkie went missing and local police didn't care enough to really pull on the loose threads. There's no way that his friends are being honest about their involvement. First off, let's stop calling them friends. More than likely these are casual acquaintances that probably use together. I think it's likely that there wasn't the bond between them that most people would consider when talking about friends. This is important because I think it makes their actions even more suspect. It explains why the one girl was laughing when discussing his disappearance, at her core she didn't care about Earl because they weren't friends. Thing is, I don't think this group killed him. These are people that ran out of gas multiple times on their way back from the camp site, they don't strike me as master criminals. One wandered off from the camp site and eventually found her way to a homeless encampment, another was only found when they discovered him in jail, and the others don't sound like they have a sturdy foundation to fall back on. If they were responsible for Earl's disappearance, I think they would have cracked immediately. To me it seems most likely that these people knew that Earl was "gone", but were not directly responsible for it. They tried to take advantage of the situation, but because they're all a mess whatever plan they had fell apart. The cops are called in, and after a few weeks of investigating they decide that they have enough information and wash their hands of the case. It doesn't seem that the cops ever really put any of the "friends" under intense questioning, because if they had I can't imagine any of them could have withstood it. We'll never have answers to this case because the cops simply threw their hands up and wrote it off because of the people involved.

I'm thinking exactly the same, from the police to the ppl involved not being competent to pull it off . It's a lot of ppl who really don't know what they're talkin about other than "the junkies killed him". And the scary part is when those ppl are are the jury in a murder trial. It sounds like the group planned on meeting a third party at the campsite as they had only enough fuel for a one way trip. More than that is impossible to say, and it is true that the next baggie of dope is the first priority of a junkie so the seemingly unusual behavior of Earl's peers is no surprise. Good luck trying to get to the bottom of this one without a fresh body or other witnesses.

I’ll admit, I was immediately wary of Earl’s friends especially considering the fact that they were all drug users and his suspected occupation as a drug dealer. They couldn’t have acted more suspicious if they tried. It’s extremely strange that they all decided to go panning for gold at night, with a small amount of gear, despite Earl’s health issues and the group’s general inexperience. But after thinking about everything, I think it’s more likely that they went out there to do something drug related. Perhaps Earl hid his supply somewhere on his claim and they all went out there to retrieve drugs. Maybe they were supposed to meet a potential buyer and things went awry? Or maybe Earl just got lost, possibly injured and was unresponsive to his friend’s search efforts. Eventually they knew they have to call the police. I can’t imagine them calling the police if they did something to Earl. The last thing active drug users want to do is encounter law enforcement. The groups suspicious behavior could be explained by nervousness due to having to deal with police unexpectedly when they likely had used drugs and/or had drugs with them. The backpack with empty pill bottles makes me think they waited to call because they were getting rid of the drugs before law enforcements got involved. They were likely panicking at thought of being arrested either for drugs or for Earl’s disappearance. If they had done something to Earl, why would they bother calling the police? Did anyone even know they were out there? I would assume that they’d try to get rid of the body and get out of there instead of calling law enforcement. Surely they knew they would be considered persons of interest since they were the last people to see Earl. The fact that the police don’t think they were responsible for Earl’s disappearance is another reason that I suspect the weird behavior had more to do with drugs and not because they killed Earl.

the plan was to kill earl, dump his body, go ''gold panning'', claim earl went missing. somehow they lost the keys to the truck. earl could not have "disappeared at that site, it was the road on one side the river on the other and about a 45 minute walk around the whole place. look at the aerial view. he could not have got lost. they took his dog with them after disposing of the body at another location. the arguments about what to tell police and the lost keys screwed them up, but their slightly different stories held together somehow.

They definitely killed him thinking he had money or drugs but was poor. They then came up with a story to dump the body and pretend he got lost somewhere else. They shoulda leaned hard on these people and played the "she already gave you up" game. It's definitely involved with that cell phone also.

Here's what I think what happened, they took him there stole his money or pushed him downhill and and killed him and then threw his body into the river and because they were stoners they forgot to take the keys to his truck out of his pocket hence the ignition being broken and the attempted siphoning of gasoline from his truck. A middles aged man guy with bad knees is never going to go down a steep grade to pan for gold. When you have bad knees its excruciating to attempt to walk down a steep grade let alone out in nature where the ground is uneven.

The mining equipment not being used is a big clue for me. And the Ranger pulling the dude over and him not tell him that a friend is missing; that’s why he is driving without a license. They went out there with the intention to disappear that guy. They had no plans on gold mining. They even syphoned his gas when they couldn’t get his truck to start and steal that. And then they went back to his house to steal more sh*t too. The changing of the stories too. I understand not saying anything about the drugs and leaving some stuff out so you don’t incriminate yourself for something stupid. But she had normal details mixed up. This is a case of foul play. Like I said, they went out there with the intent to disappear him.

I would guess they had some sort of other unknown affiliate set him up for a robbery gone wrong. I grew up around drug addicts. I had friends who were dealers. On multiple occasions, a “friend” of one of the dealers would orchestrate some sort of deal or meet-up where they would rob/assault them, either by themselves or with a 3rd party. Addiction skews your moral compass

Janet probably killed him from her surprise attacking him while he was relieving himself. After that she became frantic and tried to quickly leave by hot wiring the car. They probably disputed about drugs and wanted a hit. I’m guessing his dog didn’t do anything cause the others were distracting it? It’s really a puzzling case

@@nightheron5892 I think a search for a missing person in the wilderness isn't checking under ground. If he was killed and his body buried, the search wouldn't have found him, because they aren't turning all the soil of the whole forest over, they are just scanning the ground and trees/bushes for an exposed body. His skeleton could be out there in a shallow grave in that forest just waiting to be found.

Did he actually have a claim out there? Wouldn't there have been a record of that somewhere if he did? I suppose it's possible that this was some drug thing and they took him out there to dispose of him and apparently forgot he had his keys on him when they buried him, but the sense I get is that they were probably camping out there to do drugs, with the gold panning being their excuse if any authorities happened to come by, and that they had a freak-out when he went missing. Probably they took 6 hours to call the police to try to get rid of any drug evidence since they were probably incapable of doing much searching themselves. And one of them stole his phone out of opportunity. Very suspicious that they were moving stuff out of his house, though. More drug evidence maybe?

Good theory, but the dogs never picked up his scent. If he was out there at all it seems like he was picked up immediately by some other vehicle. Maybe he went out there to meet a supplier and got in their vehicle where things went south. He never returned and the friends started freaking out doing irrational things because they’re paranoid on drugs. They can’t tell the cops Earl left with someone else because it was an illegal deal.

in my opinion the possibilities are 3: either they went there and then for some reason they killed him ..... or he never got there and they killed him elsewhere ........ or while he was staying back someone picked him up (this would explain why the dog was there and he wasn't) and his friends are innocent

Great video (again :-) )!! This one is perplexing for sure. I cannot convince myself to lean either way - either foul play or strange disappearance. With the high potential of drug use happening with the people at the site, I have zero doubt they were trying to hide something. Even removing items from Earl's apartment suggests hiding drug paraphernalia, if not worse. But why call to report him missing? It's not like they did not try to leave (I assume) after the police arrived. Drug Addicts lie. I lived with one for too many years. Trust me when I tell you that you will find them going through your wallet, but when you ask them what they are doing in your wallet, they will tell you with a serious voice that they were not in your wallet. They will stick to that story until you almost believe it yourself. Addicts do not think clearly either. They are focused on meeting their immediate need, whatever it is, only. However I do not know if these individuals were addicts or just occasional users. But I still have to think if they did something to Earl, why just not leave? Why call 911? Why bring all that attention directly to themselves? If they wanted to take his pup, then they take the pup with them. If you consider he did "go missing", they may have been partying and just did not think or care to stop to go look. They also may have waited to sober up But again, where did he go? Perplexing. Another question and possible theory: Where are the keys to Earl's car? Was Earl also a user? I am curious to know if Earl was treating his mental disability with Wellbutrin. I have been told by an addict that Wellbutrin is known as "the poor man's cocaine". Taking a lot of it at once apparently provides a similar effect to cocaine. The additional negative to this type of drug use is that too much Wellbutrin can easily cause seizures and / or hallucinations. If Earl was treating his condition with Wellbutrin, did he use it to get high and died as a result of a seizure or hallucination that caused an extreme reaction? The drug use by the others may have caused panic and, of course, very unclear thinking. They could have disposed of his body, forgetting the keys in his pocket, cleaned up the drug paraphernalia, and then called the police.. To me, this one makes the most sense with all the known information, but it hinges entirely on the medication Earl was prescribed.

Yes, can you imagine if they dumped the body down a deep ravine or underwater and then realized Earl's keys were still on his person?! I am guessing this murder was not planned but the result of some kind of argument en route?

I don't think his friends did it, Im an addict and know plenty of fools who would act this way. They tried to hotwire his car because they didn't want to be stuck in the woods, I'm going to assume that if they killed him they would have had his keys. I think all they're thinking about next is who they're going to cop from, and the phone thing is because they didn't want to be implemented in other crimes when the cops got into the phone.

Would be interesting to know if Earls claim on the area of gold real or not. It seems the group were out there but its not really known if panning for gold was their motive?? Both vehicles didn't have much gas even to return home?? The whole story doesn't sound truthful.

I get the feeling the three women with him planned to kill him. He may have bragged he have more money than he did (owning land with gold on it) and they took advantage of this sweet old man. Maybe meth was involved. But the dynamic immediately put a bad taste in my mouth.
