Wasgamuwa National Park Elephant Safari (Sri Lanka Travels, Dec 2023)

So, in our travel planning we - Ash, Lilla & I - decided we wanted to see elephants in a national park. As we were piecing the trip together on places we had in mind to visit, and we were booking things a day or two in advance (travelling flexibly!) a national park in the central plateau fit nicely in our itinerary from travelling from Sigiriya/Dambulla to Kandy.
Welcome to Wasgamuwa National Park in Sri Lanka, the place where the elephants roam free - about 150 - and the wildlife is so diverse with an assortment of birds (including witnessing peacocks flying), deer, lizards, and monkeys.
If you are looking for a worthwhile, short safari experience amidst some adventure travel, Wasgamuwa is the place to be - you are guaranteed to see Sri Lankan elephants in their natural habitat. The herds appear healthy, and we were surprised by the number of baby elephants - the national parks have been doing a respectable job in nurturing these herds. While there was more wildlife to be seen, in a 3-hour afternoon tour (compared to a multi-day experience required in East Africa) we managed to see lots - including a broad variety of migratory birds who winter and breed in the wetlands of the park.
So, if you're ready to swap a mundane zoo visits for a front-row seat in the wild in a rough and tumble jeep, pack your camera, and your sense of adventure amidst Sri Lanka’s iconic World Heritage sites where Wasgamuwa National Park is a lovely stop - where the elephants are the headliners, and you're a witness to their grandeur
