How to wire a washing machine universal motor and control the speed using a SCR Voltage Regulator. As it says the regulator controls the voltage, it does not control the speed directly, so if a load is applied the motor will slow down, you can compensate for this by turning up the voltage and the speed will rise. I also show how to reverse the direction of the motor.
This motor is a welling hxgn2i from an Indesit WIA111 washing machine.
I have used a scr voltage regulator to control the speed, you can find one if you search for "220V AC 5000W SCR Voltage Regulator Motor Speed Control Lamp Dimmer Thermostat" or similar on ebay, I paid £10 for 2 of them.

But at last a video showing the same number of wires (although different colours) and an explanation I can follow with the added bonus of speed control! Well done! I've looked at many videos covering this subject (several Irish?) but they drift off the subject by saying things like 'and dis one goes to one of de uther ones...' that's no good for beginners, we need it in definitive terms all the way!!

Hello Very nice video with great explanation Just a question about "more field winding" in my case I'm having a motor with 8 wires, 2 for tacho, 2 for brushes, and 4 for field winding (connected 2 by 2) so in order to run this motor should I connect two wires of the field winding and use the left ones, somthing like connecting the wires to make one field winding !
@bootsowen
@bootsowen 7 жыл бұрын
Bearing in mind that I haven't seen the motor, nor do I know the model number. For your 4 field windings imagine that one of the 4 wires is one end of the coil, another is the other end and the remaining two are intermediate taps. the motor will run with different torque/speed when any two are connected up in the way that I have shown. I am not sure if what you have suggested will work. It might. you could do some experiments. You sill have to experiment to find the best speed combination for you.

Hello what will happen if I use the variac variable in the electric motor DC for continuous use?? will cause problems? 2) If I use the speed controller with two conductors and one of the grounding to the electric motor, it will cause problems? (that's your speed controller in the plastic white box) 3) can I use the speed control on the heater of the washing machine without a thermostat? I would love your answer!!! :)

A variac is an autotransformer, so will not work on dc.# 2 I don't understand your question The SCR speed controller will work on a heater element, but the wattage on a heater element is high 2 or 3 kW, so you will need a big controller.

Hello again, you helped me before get my motor to run. Could you help me now. I would like to use the motor to turn a trommel (basically a circular Sieve for gravel and soil) I made from bicycle wheel rims and mesh. I think I need a fan belt large enough to go round the cycle wheel rim and the W/m Motor. Is there a specific type or style of drive belt that the motor would turn and where could I find one long enough (probably 2.5 metres long) If you think something else would/should be used to drive the cycle wheel rim please advise.
@bootsowen
@bootsowen 4 жыл бұрын
You could make the belt out of anything, but i would use 2 washing machine belts, cut and then sewn together to make a longer one. use good strong thin cord, maybe dental floss, and stitch so that the stitches are well hidden in the grooves of the belt. You might need to make guides, like the front derailleur on a bicycle, to guide the belt onto the pulleys. That might work. Or you could use an old leather belt, cut carefully into strips and then sewn together. Charity shops sell cheap belts.

Hi Again, After lockdown I have got back using my trommel to sieve my gravel from dirt. All is going well but the problem I have now is speed. I have a voltage regulator like you described but when there is a load the motor needs more voltage to turn, then as the load decreases (i.e. the sifted gravel falls out the other end) it speeds up until it is throwing gravel out quite dangerously. Right now I have to control the regulator manually adjusting the power to keep the speed safe. Is there any way to use the tacho wires to control the speed? My other alternatives are to find and use a tumble drier motor (i.e. slower) or construct some form of gearing to allow the motor to run faster but turn the trommel slower. Thanks again for your help.

Hello, Thanks for the great videos, I have salvaged an ACC type 20584.603 motor to use. I have identified the Tacho wires. the two brush wires and four winding wires. Connected as you described using the 2 brush wires and 2 of the windings, but no response from the motor. Should I just try the other winding wires in various combinations? OR is there anything I can check with my multimeter, if so what am I looking for (Bearing in mind I do not know if the motor was working when I salvaged it) Thanks for any advice you can give.
@bootsowen
@bootsowen 4 жыл бұрын
you could check for continuity between one brush wire and the other, if you get continuity it means that the brushes are probably working and the windings that the brushes connect to are probably ok. then you want to find a pair of the four winding wires that have continuity, it could be that there are two pairs and that you got them mis matched, it could also be that there is a overheat sensor in there (unlikely unless a high end machine) that has blown, again, a continuity test will tell you. so to recap, check for continuity between the brush wires, and continuity between any pair of Stator armature windings (a pair from the 4 you identified) don't worry if you get it wrong, it will blow the fuse on your consumer unit or trip the switch. let me know how it goes. Post a video?
@royeslough
@royeslough 4 жыл бұрын
@@bootsowen Thanks, after checking carefully as you described the motor now works (must have been either loose connection or RCD not reset properly) Can you offer any advice on which winding to use? It is an ACC type 20584.603 which shows 480/15000 RPM on the label the wires are as follows: Pin 1 Light Green - winding Pin 2 Yellow - Brush Pin 3 Green - Brush Pin 4 White - WInding Pin 5 White - Winding but linked already to Pin 6 via loop wire Pin 6 Brown Winding Pin 7 & 8 - Tacho Pin 9 Orange - WInding I put live to pin 1 and neutral to pin 2 then linked 3 to 4 - worked at a fast speed I left live and neutral and linked Pin 3 to Pin 9 - Worked even faster? Do you have any info on which combination of winding will give which speeds? If not then I will use trial and error once I have the motor linked to my tromel and purchase the voltage regulator if needed. Once again thanks for all your helpful videos and advice.
@bootsowen
@bootsowen 4 жыл бұрын
What I usually do is try the different combinations for what seems loudest, not very technical but usually accurate enough for my purposes. I have never done this but you could see if you could wire two windings at once, like: neutral to brush, brush to pin 5 and then either 4, 1 and 9 to the live. (or some other combination. I have no idea if this would work. It could break it!! I wouldn't use the voltage regulator in this video, I have got a better one from ebay based on a TDA1085c chip, there is a ebayer from russia selling them, I have posted a video on my channel with it. Search for TDA1085c. they are more expensive, but they take the tacho readings so can keep a constant speed, i guess it depends on what you want to do with it. Also, the speed ratings may be achieved by this washer motor, but only when it is connected by a belt to the pulley under load and with a tacho sensor, when you hotwire the motor like you have done with no load then it will always overspeed. Even with some load.

@bootsowen 3 жыл бұрын
Good luck with that, you should really not do it the way you have suggested, Typically these motors go up to 15000rpm, bit fast for a belt sander when you could spend £5 on a controller, or just use a big resistor in series and that should hold the speed back a bit.
@temporecustos5722

@@bootsowen I understand that. I tried your wiring method and it works fine, it's just that the motor isn't labelled with the speed. I was considering reducing the speed with a system of pulleys rather than the controller method.

Hello, I would like to thank you for this detailed video. I am wondering if there is a speed control inside the washing machine since it works with different speeds
@bootsowen
@bootsowen 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Ziad, the washing machine uses a tachometer (pulse sensor) in the end of the motor to monitor the speed. How it does this depends on the model. In a universal motor it is an IGBT transistor that switches very quickly to control the speed. Newer machines using an induction motor run on three phase electricity and are brushless, they regulate the speed by varying the frequency of the electricity using an inverter. In my experience it is too complicated to reuse the control parts from the machine. the short answer to you question was yes,

@bootsowen
@bootsowen 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, two cables to tacho? two cables to brushes? and 3 cables to windings? Then there should be some combination of two of the windings in the configuration that I have shown will get you going, using other wires from the windings should give you different speeds. The system in the washing machine would only ever use two winding taps at a time. Wash speed, spin speed. Let me know how you get on!

Motor started humming then started to spin at low after I rotate the rotator. The red and yellow was connected to a capacitor so I figured that one of it should be neutral. Hello, I'm not sure if you are still following/replying to questions, but I'm a little stuck. I have a washer motor but I have 4 wires, 1 of which just grounds to the frame, so I've got 3 wires to figure out. I don't have brushes, stator, or anything else visible. The 3 wires appear to just be the ends of windings, now I'm in the US, so Hot/Load is normally black and neutral is usually white. The wires going into the motor are red, yellow, and white, ---- There is a capacitor with red and yellow leads that clip onto it. (I have the full wiring, but have not traced anything yet). My guess is White is neutral, and the red/yellow from cap mate with Load, and then ground everything? Sound about right, or no? I have a different motor that was wired fairly similar, (it was a squirrel cage microwave motor, I'll have to double-check the way I wired it). I had some trouble figuring out, but finally found out that one wire was neutral, and one of the other 2 that went to the cap went to load for one speed or the other to load for 2nd speed.. I'm just trying to avoid sparks or smoke!! Thanks,
@bootsowen

Hi There, It is very hard to diagnose without a photo or a link to a video you have made. Is the capacitor wired to the motor? if so it may be a type not covered by this video, by your description, if the capacitor isn't attached to the motor, it may be a 3 phase type motor, see my other videos for how to wire these, and why not to bother! Good luck.

Thanks for replying. I re-read what I wrote, and I'm sorry for the confusion. It's weird, I can find pics online of this motor, but no wiring instructions. Let me see if I can clarify the description, and I'll add the links to the online pics, Idk if they will go through though. Ok, the clip attached to the motor has 4 terminals/tabs/wires... 1 of those wires is green/yellow (ground). In US green or g/y is ground so it just connects to the motor frame, leaving just 3 wires to deal with, and they all look like they go into the windings, it's a little hard to see. The 3 wires are red, yellow, and white; in the US white is normally neutral. The red and yellow come off the motor, run a foot or 2 and come to a Y, or splice. The red one splits to 2 wires, one line to one side of the 47mF cap, and a red that must have ran to the control panel. The yellow also splits like a Y, it continues to the other side of the cap, (they are attached to a clip still that only snaps into the cap one way), but it's an orange wire that Y's or splits off from the yellow. So the white should be neutral, the red and yellow both go to a 47mF cap, and both (red/yellow) split off just before the cap. I hope I wrote that in a way that makes since? I used my DMM and checked the ohms of the 3 terminals, the red/yellow have 12.3 ohms, but either red or yellow to white gives me 6.2 ohms. Based on that I would assume that means Hot to either red/yellow and white to neutral would be low speed, and both red/yellow to hot would be high speed, but then what about reverse? I saw the washer along the street in my neighborhood and stopped to rip it apart real quick, (I don't have a truck so couldn't haul it and take apart as I'd have liked), and about 1/2 way through taking it apart the trash men showed up so I didn't have a chance to follow the Y's off the R/Y, I just had to cut the wire and go... It's a Welling W1006399, just that search does bring up pics of this motor but no vids on it. It's a 1/4 hp 120V 3Amp Thermal protected. (I hope it's a resettable but ???) It does say 40 Celsius max ambient. I'm going to attach a link or 2 of pics I found online, I hope they work. In addition to how to wire it, I'd like to figure out if this is a "continuous run motor" or not so I can figure out what I can use it for, like a lathe, table saw, ect. It does still have the small pully on the shaft, (I can pull it off if I want/need), and I was able to grab the bigger pully and belt before I had to grab and go. This is a link to a pic of the motor, www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fhttp2.mlstatic.com%2Fmotor-para-lavadora-whirlpool-part-no-w10006415-D_NQ_NP_726546-MLV26136199555_102017-F.jpg&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Farticulo.mercadolibre.com.ve%2FMLV-508214567-motor-para-lavadora-whirlpool-part-no-w10006415-_JM&docid=cpD1EZqkTr9SmM&tbnid=bU6LdDA5DD_bPM%3A&vet=1&w=1200&h=900&bih=495&biw=1093&ved=2ahUKEwjXw5TE2v7cAhVQG6wKHVqoBigQxiAoBHoECAEQGA&iact=c&ictx=1 Left to right is the Green/Yellow ground, then yellow, red, and white. And here's a link to the identical one on eBay, www.ebay.com/itm/WHIRPOOL-MAYTAG-AMANA-WASHER-DRIVE-MOTOR-WELLING-W10006399-YXB85-4H-1-4-HP-/222636789156 Any help would be greatly appreciated. If it was me, on the basis that I got the motor for free, I would just put live and neutral across any two cables and see what happens. But sometimes when I do that the blue smoke appears. I have a read a simple book, Electric Motors in the Home Workshop, £6 on ebay. It would be a better guide than I am, it will explain what your multimeter readings mean, etc. And you would certainly enjoy it!

I figured out the wiring for the particular motor I have. There's only 3 wires to figure out as the 4th grounds to frame, so just W, R, Y, and White is neutral (here in States) so I hoped I just had to figure out R&Y. It's so simple it's stupid! White does go to N, and Hot to either R/Y it spins one way, or the other wire to hot spins in reverse, but NOT both to hot!! Simple. I guess I just wanted to try and be sure, but the Voltage/Amps are on the motor, so I put a manual reset breaker half the Amp inline just in case. Without any load it shouldn't draw near the rated amperage, it worked. I can only assume that the Speed is controlled via a microcontroller on the PCB that I was unable to grab. I'm going to look up the book you mentioned, check it out, and possibly buy it for future reference. I do however have another question, would these be considered "continuous run" motors? I'm going to see if a search will provide anything, but I have found little info on this one at all?? Thanks Much,

Maybe the motor is a dud, I posted some videos recently of fault finding on a bosch machine motor. It had various failures. For instance a coil can be burnt out, brushes can be worn out, etc. Are you sure the motor works? I like the way you can hear power. Sounds to me like the motor is dead or you are not wiring it correctly or both. I enjoy that there is a mystery wire. How have you identified the others?

Great help in wiring my wadhing machine motor, I have an induction motor I believefrom an Electra AWM800 washer, it has nine wires of which two are for the tacho, any idea how I could wire this to drive my latest project which is a dirt trommel for my allotment

Hi Steve, are you sure its an induction motor? Does it have brushes? if it has nine wires including brushes it is quite unlikely to be an induction motor. Post a video of it and send us a link and I'll be better able to help. If you search my for "3 phase induction motor wiring" it might help. But really, if it has a tacho and is as old as the model you gave me I would suspect that 2 wires go to brushes and 2 to the tacho, leaving 5 to various tappings on the stator coil. wiring as I have described in the video, using any two of the stator tappings should make it work. Using others of the 5 tappings to the stator will give different speeds, under loaded conditions, if it is a universal motor. Good luck, let me know.
