Washington sports history fun facts: 1. George preston marshall is from Washington dc, but started his nfl team in boston because at the time football was known as a northern sport, there was no market for football in the south. Yes DC was considered a southern city with segregation (had slaves) and southern industries/agriculture. He was a laundromat bussinessman and had a professional basketball team in the 1920s called "Washington laundrymen". Marshall was convinced by his wife to move the team to his hometown, dc. 1933 marshall bought the folded newark tornadoes to build the boston braves. Its said he end up not even paying any money for the team. 2. The boston braves became the boston redskins as a gimmick to attract boston redsox fans since the redskins played in Wrigley field. 3. The redskins first dc home was Griffiths stadium named after washington nationals (senators) owner, calvin Griffith, which had a section for black audiences. The first Washington baseball team was both the nationals and senators, most of their time in Washington their offical name was nationals but local fans called them senators. The reason for the name change was because the baseball team changed beer sponsorship from national bohemian beer (a staple in baltimore today) to senate beer (no longer exsist). This is the same Washington baseball team that won 1922 world series and had the traditon of the president throwing the first pitch. This team is the Minnesota twins, not to be confused by the second Washington sentators which is the texas rangers. The current Washington nationals is the third Washington baseball team and came from Montréal. 4. The Washington wizards also changed their name in the late 1990s from the bullets because of its association with gang violence. The team took a public poll and wizards won. The other alternative names were, Washington express and Washington seadogs. The team was previously the baltimore bullets named after bullet trains. 5. Jack kent cooke and virginia govenor, doug wilder made a public announcement to the press that the redskins would be moving from RFK to an old train yard in alexandria virginia. In the early 1990s. The plans were set, construction companies contracted. But Alexandria residents fought rigorously to prevent the teams move. And their efforts worked, hence why fedex stadium went to landover maryland. 6. In my opinion the greatest athelete to play for Washington was sammy baugh. He was literally a game changer. The forward pass prior to baugh was an offesnive play out of desperation, seen sort of like a punt. It was rarely used outside of 4th down sometimes 3rd down. At the time 1900s the forward pass was mandated onto football even by president teddy Roosevelt at the college level to make the game safer. Over a dozen deaths in football every year in the early years. Sammy baugh was able to take this aspect of the game and use it to give Washington mulitple championships. He was also a football celebrity, staring in movies. He not only held records for passing but he also broke records for interceptions (defensive) and punt distince (special teams). He was in the inaugural first nfl hall of fame class. His punt record stood until less than 10 years ago. Some Australian punter in the nfl (forgot who) was interviewed about breaking the baughs record. 7. Joe gibbs invented the trips offensive formation. He left the redskins to work for nascar. And came back a few years.

Ok, I'm not a Washington football fan, but the team who chose the "Commanders" nickname straight up blew it. Here's my two cents. RedTails! Infamous World War ll squadron who flew protection for aircore bombers over Germany (and other locations). I am totally biased as my father was a navigator on a B24 Liberator. He told me that their missions were very successful and it would have been a complete disaster without the presence of the Tuskegee squadron clearing airspace for them. Of course, the RedTails moniker is closely associated with that squadron. Dad's eyes welled up during the one discussion we had about this. He knew, as do I that his life and family may not have been possible without the Tuskegee contingent. A missed opportunity here to correctly honor an important part of our history. RIP Dad. RIP to all those who sacrificed.

Tbey could have came up with so many proper and prideful native American themed names they could have switched up, I don't like that they completely got rid of the native American heritage itself associated with that team. It's kind of sad to see those people being erased from history.

I'm a skins fan. Redtails is worse than commanders. You ask your nfl team to change their name to that. But to be honest all options outside redskins suck.

Time and especially winning helps a new name settle in. For example, for Los Angeles the names Lakers and Dodgers don’t really make sense. But lots of both time and winning made those classic names. As for the Washington Nationals aka the Nats, that’s not really a powerful name at all either. But they won a World Series and they have a history now. Commanders truly and strongly relates to D.C. and Maryland and Virginia. From General Washington, to all branches of the military, to the Commander-in-Chief. Winning will make any team name strong-even plain ones like the Browns or Packers that sound good now because of years of tradition and people growing up with them. Also, think about it: a Commander makes a name like a Cardinal (a small red seed-eating bird) sound like a weakling…

Commanders and Patriots are unique in being military-related names in the NFL. The game is a war on the gridiron so it works. The military represents power and courage. There was a professional football team called the San Antonio Commanders that reflected Texas military history. So there is a precedent for this name…

How could you leave out the addition of Bobby Beathard? Beathard is the one who suggested hiring Joe Gibbs. Big oversight. You also left out the fact that the '87 team with only replacement players beat the Cowboys who had almost half their regulars playing. So much history you left out. Very disappointing.

Ima have to find a new team .....this is helluva dumb and there was near zero real effort put into this. At this point .....im okay with dan moving the team and in a few years we get another franchise. We not gon win anything in the next ten years. Mark my words : In 5yrs...we'll suck so bad that we'll have almost a whole new roster and coach. Chase, Montez, Allen, Terry and Gibson will all be gone...some will request a trade and we won't get any new good coaches or free agents. In 5yrs ...out of 85 games, we'll win 17.

Dan Snyder has done something I never thought could be done. He has driven me away from my Redskins. None of those championships belong to the Commanders. If you look at the name on those championship trophies it says Redskins, it doesn't say Commanders. I hate the name Commanders. I call them Commies for short. This is not the same team I grew up with. They don't have same owner, they don't play in the same stadium, they don't play in the same City, they don't have the same name, they don't have the same personality. Personality begins with ownership and Dan Snyder has a terrible personality. I have heard it said that they will win back disaffected fans if they win. No way. I don't care what they do. I have stopped watching the NFL altogether. Though I grew up in DC, I live in Philadelphia now and my son is an avid Eagles fan and I am happy for their success for his sake. They remind me a little bit of my Redskins. 😥
