by your logic, native americans are not native to america either, as they didn't originate from america... No one that exists originated from america, you are native to wherever you are born "Native: a person born in a specified place or associated with a place by birth" If people born in america are not native to america, where are they native to?
@Beurglessse
@Beurglessse 4 жыл бұрын
@@pixeled9683 Nope, you are wrong. "Native American" is one term, it can't be split and its definition is: "a member of one of the groups of people who were living in North and South America before Europeans arrived" Someone born in America is simply a "native of the US" (note the absence of the capitalized 'N').

+Vandal if you want to get technical, then you can say that about every body from everywhere, when you look far enough into history. countries are just areas of land that have been inhabited, usually by force, by a civilization defined by their culture. Any threat to their way of life was often wiped out, either through genocide, war, or simply over powered. Long before Columbus founded America, native americans had been living on these lands for many generations. , there was communication going on between land masses across what is now the Pacific Ocean. Indigenous inhabitants used natural sources for direction, such as the waves and the stars, instead of compasses, longitude or latitude. The point is, there was already people living here when our 'founding fathers' arrived. Indigenous peoples saw land as a free place, home to all living things. Europe was a place of wars, religious authority, persecution and oppression, ect. In fact, the 'founding fathers' and early settlers were escaping europe for such reason. Unfortunately, the "America" that is today was built on the genocide and forced oppression of the indigenous people. So yes, being born here does mean YOU are native to America, but there are still many people alive today whos ancestors were here long before the european settlement. They are Native to this land before it was "United States of America"

You get what you look for if you want to antagonize people that's easy it don't make you a hero. He accomplished what it truly appears like he was after you get what you ask for Had he wore a shirt that said I love all my brothers and sisters of every race, instead of a few standoffish people wondering whats he trying to do he would have had 1000 X the response, people of all colors races heritages and creeds would have ran up and hugged him and said man I love you too. Love conquers all things haven't we had enough of the stupidness and riots (violence is not protesters they are rioters) Look for love spread love and you will find the returns are much higher and far greater. Dr Martian Luther King set the example and accomplished great things doing just that. Why are so many reverting to such counter productive things, then acting like they are so shocked when they actually got just what they were looking for.??? Look at Dennis Rodman a surprisingly amazing diplomat he wasn't looking and won't listen to evil things when he is just out to make some friends and smiles, he helped to change the world in his words when he was in Singapore for the NK summit it's a great day baby. The entire world is a better place because all he looked for was friendship and smiles, not listening to any evil, and if you live in North Korea or South Korea or even Japan you know exactly what I'm talking about. Someone else's quote "Vikings, Pirates, Buccaneers, Patriots, Knickerbockers, Canucks, Celtics . . . All "Caucasian" (which is funny because white is a race and Caucasian is a geographical ethnicity) and they have cartoon caricatures for the mascots as well . . . So . . . Very . . . Ummmm . . . I personally believe that the name and mascot contributes to fans dressing like stereotypical Native Americans. You see most fans will dress to imitate the mascot of their favorite team when it's a game day, if the name and mascot is changed to something that isn't racist or offensive, fans more than likely won't wear racist attire to represent that team.

in the early 1900s, many white Americans whose ancestors came to North America before the 1780s referred to themselves as "native Americans" to separate themselves from the newly immigrated Europeans (who they did not like). Ironically this was also during the time when many "native Americans" aka white Americans wanted to remove actual Native Americans and deport Mexicans (who often had ancestral ties to the Southwestern area of the US - making them native to the lands they were being deported from). So not only is the use of the term not true, it's based on 100+ years of anti-POC racism in America

One of the many things we as Native people have to face being a minority in our homelands and having so much taken away from us. Like the lady said...do you know what it's like to be Native in this town. Not all Native Americans live on reservations. We are still recovering and going through intergenerational trauma. Our parents were the last generation to be in boarding schools, it was ok to own Native slaves 150 years ago. To the people who say just get over it. This is recent history. My ancestors didn't give up the rights to their lands, the U.S. government let white immigrants squat on it and then have the land for free. Don't believe me then look up the definition of what an Oklahoma Sooner and Boomer is. People who got free land taken from Cherokees while they had to watch. That is one example of racist mascots. That land wasn't taxed and now generations of those squatters families have farms and say this farm has been in my family for generations and now the government wants to take it. Welcome to being Native. Or those people who get so much money from things that their families have given them. Guess what...everything that Native families had was stripped away from them. My ancestors were forced to live on the poorest lands in the country, while everyone else got to live wherever they pleased. We had to fight harder and continue to fight just to be able to live our lives with the freedoms were are given. And all those treaties the U.S. government signed with Native tribes were broken.

Wow, 7 years ago this comment was written and not a single reaction under it! Is it the horrible but undeniably true facts that this person so eloquently stated? Is it the fact that it is indeed incomprehensible that there were and still are(!) people who don’t see how offensive the former name of this football team was? I think it’s very weird. Then again: I think the complete way Native people were AND STILL ARE treated is ‘weird’. And that’s one of the biggest understatements I’ve made in my entire life!!

How can someone be 1/12 of an ethnicity? Doesn't it have to be a power of 2 in the denominator?

all four of the grandparents could have different small quanities so that both parents together have a total of 1/6
@AvnishCPatel
@AvnishCPatel 7 жыл бұрын
But doesn't it have to be a power of 2 denominator though? If we take it back 10 generations, then that's 1024 people who can contribute to the ethnicity. If we assume that 10 generations back each individual was 100% of a one of two ethnicities, then their children will be either be 1/2 or 1 of a particular ethnicity. Suppose there exists only one pair of individuals that have different ethnicities. Then there is only one member of the following generation of 512 people that is (1/2). In the next generation of 256, there will be one member of (1/4-3/4) ethnicity and the other 255 with 1. In the next gen. of 128, there will be one person of (1/8 - 7/8). If we continue this analysis we get the final person with (1/1024 - 1023/1024) ethnicity which is consistent with our original generation with only one individual of differing ethnicity. My question is how can we choose ethnicity values that produce a denominator that is not a power of 2?

+Avnish Patel Hmm they way im thinking is: I have one parent who is 1/16 native and another who is 1/8th native wouldnt i be 3/32th native? thus a non power of two! and id theorize that with the right combo such as this you could produce a 1/12th over a complicated mix of different ppl over several generations.
@AvnishCPatel
@AvnishCPatel 7 жыл бұрын
Hello again. In that case, the denominator is still a power of 2 (2^5 = 32). So even though the numerator is not, it seems that the denominator must be a power of 2. If you look back at the example case, I tried to show that the individual would have (1/1024 to 1023/1024 nationality). So the numerator is a sum of pieces that have a power of 2 denominator. This means that the denominator will be a power of 2. I need a concrete example with a non-(2^n) denominator if you are keen to oblige.

06edmondsonl Let's not forget that the indians weren't the peace-loving angels they're often depicted as. They were constantly warring among themselves. Their great misfortune was that the Europeans were just plain more effective at it due to their technological superiority. If the Americas and Europe had been connected by land-bridge and indians had somehow stumbled across a technologically inferior hodgepodge of European nations, I have no doubt that today "Native Europeans" would be feeling sorry for themselves for having been driven off their land by the "red man".

antred11 So was most of Europe and that continued till WW2 and even minor skirmishes after that. The problem is that the history of America is distorted regarding the first time European explorers came. The fights could have been about anything and not necessarily an all season thing. But the problem with Most European conquest is that they say they brought stability , peace etc. Well we all know how that went for Iraq and Afghanistan. So yeah Native Americans may have been fighting amongst them selves doesn't mean White guy had to poke his nose and cause mass genocide.

Venkat G They didn't have to but it was bound to happen. It's just what Europe did for hundreds of years, all over the world. Regarding Iraq and Afghanistan, I would agree that we shouldn't have been there in the first place, but you make it sound as though we've made it worse. They were killing each other before we came and they'll still be killing each other when we leave.

So it's ok to have Native Americans as a mascot and a racial slur as a team name. But it's not ok to have a black person as a mascot that has outdated clothing, and the team name would be "Ni**ers? Do us natives look cool with all the feathers in our long hair? Do you think we're generous for "giving up our land". That's what most people think. But in reality, he had to earn those feathers. Every single one of those feathers On a headdress meant something. There was a prayer in every bead. It was very very difficult to earn a full headdress. Having a people group as a mascot is not okay in general. People would freak out if they had a team name named the N word with a black person as the mascot. People don't freak out when there's a racist stereotype Native American as a team mascot and the team name is called "redskins" for pride and loving meaning. If you mean to be loving and you didn't intend for the name to be offensive, then change it to something that's not fucking offensive. People don't freak out when there's an Irish person as a mascot because they think it's normal.
@elkeyaa1718

The fact that they are even wearing headdresses makes it even worse cause you don't buy them they don't get passed down you earn them and you have to earn every single feather
