I grew up just outside DC, so this is particularly interesting to me. The National Cathedral’s stone were all hand-carved by master craftsmen, and it completing the work was a daunting task. I was lucky enough to tour the stone carvers’ studio when I was a child. It was fascinating, and maybe my first exposure to large scale art studios. I’ve run large art studios for most of my career, so this visit may have planted a seed in my young heart.

My Great Grandfather worked on the National Cathedral. I got a picture of him at the topping of the bell tower/ steeple. He worked on many monuments, museums, the National Archives, and The Washington Mational Masonic Memorial, in Alexandria, Va.

My father worked in the WWI buildings on the north side of the Refecting Pool until the late 1970's.

My Dad was assigned at Navy Admin at Pentagon. We had a home not far away in an area called Fort Hunt , Va. He was assigned to the Pentagon for eight years during the 1970s: Nixon ( Ford), Carter & a bit of the Reagan administrations....so, among other aspects, we saw how nearly complete the personnel & objectives are upended if the presid. political party changes from one administration, to the next. I absolutely LOVED all the educational resources and some nature asoects at DC....one example is the Cherry Blossom Festival each Spring. Thank you for this insightful upload of descriotion & photos of early DC❤
