Washington DC Transportation Guide for Visitors and Tourists

Our normal trips to DC have been by car. We always select a hotel with on-site parking and leave the car parked until our departure date. We walk, use Metro, or the buses to get to our destinations while in DC. However, this past January, we found that Amtrak operates a NE Corridor Train from Roanoke, VA to Boston with one of the stops being DC. Because the train only has two departure times from Roanoke (very early AM or mid afternoon) we stayed overnight in Roanoke and took the early AM train. That train got into Union Station in DC around noon time. Gave us the opportunity to have lunch before heading to our hotel via Metro to the Dupont Circle area. The Amtrak train was a great idea to reach DC and other than our return trip involving our train engine colliding with a car stuck on a railroad crossing in far out suburban DC, we will most likely use Amtrak for any future DC trips.

DC Metro has the most comfortable seats out of any mass transit rail system I have been on.

Hi. I used many of your suggested trip hacks a couple years ago when I visited Washington. The hacks were great (especially using the circulator bus) and my family had a wonderful trip. Heading to Boston at the end of the month. Do you have any suggestions for that town?

Another reason not to mess with the car in DC is DC has some hard-core car Jackers.

My husband and I are coming to DC in three weeks, we’ve read soooo many negative reviews about people being charged hundreds of dollars for bikes that were docked, or docks being broken and people unable to dock bikes and ride around until they find a dock that works. It doesn’t sound like capital bikes is reliable… what’s your take on all the negative reviews? Thanks for all your helpful advice!!!

I've used Capital Bikeshare for over a decade and never had this issue of being charged. Push the bikes in hard. Use the app to confirm it's docked.
