That electric razor/buzzing sound the Breda cars make are absolutely gorgeous to listen to (especially from the inside as it rolls along....really soothing after a long day of work !). A beautiful sounding train from braking to take off !!

The buzzing sound I believe is the dynamic braking. The electrical current is reversed to the motors on the car so the motors are generating power, that power is pushed to resistors, or back to the 3rd rail. This caused the train to slow down. The air brakes don't engage until near the end of the stopping sequence (except emergency when they apply immediately).

I miss the whistling transmission of the rohr-1000's and the buzzing of the unrehabed Breda-2000's and 3000's. As the 5000's are retired. I will miss the howling noise it just makes rolling on the tracks. My favorite series as of now are the Alstom 6000's. They are the last series to bear the unique Livery, Shape, And even the sound of classic WMATA. And since the Alstom 6000 is the second most recent EMU, it will be around a long time. :) It only turns 10 next year (2019).
