The dichotomy of I want to get to my destination without the fear of death vs while i need somewhere to freely park my car at public expense.

We need to build our cities beyond the personal car drivers' desires.

From Ft Stockton I almost prefer risking Washington from Eagle to Albatross or even 1st street than that stretch of University. Drivers tend to be too aggressive on that section.

Isn't it telling that people riding bikes have to make all these negotiations and discuss which backroads we feel like are least likely to kill us?

Indeed. I take Ft. Stockton to Eagle (I think) where there is a short bike lane. Left on Washington (where the sensor did not work and I had to ask pedestrians to hit the beg button for me but the City says it has implemented a temporary fix for that. Anyway, left on Washington to Dove where I can get into the Vons. One block which is pretty wide and not too bad most of the time. Getting OUT of Vons is terrifying though! The choice once in the Vons is: Bad bike racks in the garage with signs warning you not to use them or decent rack out front but you cannot use a cart to get your groceries to your bike because anti-theft devices on the wheels cause it to lock up when you go out the doors to the bike rack. I do real grocery runs on my bike and carry about 25 pounds of groceries sometimes. It is not safe to leave the cart and carry bag by bag to the bike, then leave the groceries in the bike unattended while I go back to the cart for the rest of the groceries there. Need to use my cart! Another choice to get to Vons from back in the 1970's is to stay on Ft. Stockton until it ends at Dove. Then snake through the parking lot that serves the US Bank. Harder now than all those decades ago because people park across the old parking lot skirt and there are now permanent posts preventing cars from going through like that any more. But if you can fit, it's the safest route.
