Nothing like a painted double yellow line for the drivers to totally ignore. Ugh. That route has always been iffy. I take A to 28th or beyond which is not only quicker but a much safer to get to Rad's or Kindred on Beech.

I'm curious about the bike you're riding in this video. I get a glimpse of the front rack, bag and what appears to be a cable (bar end shifters?) Touring bike?
@RidingBikesinSanDiego

This bike is an old Novara Verita. I got it for free around the neighborhood, and the SRAM double-tap was all beat up, so I swapped with some bar end shifters (friction), and that front rack is a Soma Fab thing they were selling cheap because the welding is a bit off. Technically, it's a "light touring" bike. It's my beater. Frame's all dinged up and it's ugly, but it's great to ride and lock up just about anywhere!

Thanks, @serafine-y8v! On the second page of the slides, second bullet point says "Initial scope included widening of Golf Course Drive between 26th and 28th Stret to install additional travel lanes, bike lanes, and sidewalk." Now, I don't know if that initial scope has changed, but on page 3, it says "Install new pedestrian cart paths," and I wonder if that would also be paths people on bikes would take. So, I see the reference there, but it's definitely not clear. :)

One thing that's really lovely about this area is that it's relatively flat. A resident of North Park, South Park or Golden Hill will have a bunch of hills to climb depending on what they want to get, but in Hillcrest and Mission Hills (for the most part) it's much easier to get around on a bike...if the roads allowed it.

I live just off of Calgary's version of El Cajon blvd. Some spots have on-street parking, but most don't. Basically every business has a parking lot either underground or in front/behind it at surface level. It's Canada though, so a lot of the street parking takes up much of the driving lane. If they got rid of all street parking , they would have room for a bike lane going north and south. But businesses with large parking lots fight against losing THREE street parking spots. The city needs to just grow a spine and be like "too bad".
@RidingBikesinSanDiego
@RidingBikesinSanDiego Күн бұрын
What gets me about those parking spots in front of businesses is that they're hardly ever for perspective customers; rather, the owners/employees park there and have their cars sit all day. It's got nothing to do with convenience for customers.

@RidingBikesinSanDiego
@RidingBikesinSanDiego 2 күн бұрын
Different roads are used differently. I think it makes sense that we'd treat each stretch in a way that works for the way people use it and for the conditions that are present. I don't think anyone expects bikes lanes on EVERY street. But they should be on the streets that have the destinations people go to, and those streets should reasonably connect to where people live. El Cajon Blvd has miles of places people want and need to get to, and should have infrastructure to help folks be safe.

So, San Diego Ave isn't bad, but it becomes one-way at California St, making it difficult to get to Washington. As for climbing on California and Henry, that's pretty damn steep! On an ebike, maybe, but it's a little too brutal for me on a regular bike, especially loaded with bags from travel.

Indeed. I take Ft. Stockton to Eagle (I think) where there is a short bike lane. Left on Washington (where the sensor did not work and I had to ask pedestrians to hit the beg button for me but the City says it has implemented a temporary fix for that. Anyway, left on Washington to Dove where I can get into the Vons. One block which is pretty wide and not too bad most of the time. Getting OUT of Vons is terrifying though! The choice once in the Vons is: Bad bike racks in the garage with signs warning you not to use them or decent rack out front but you cannot use a cart to get your groceries to your bike because anti-theft devices on the wheels cause it to lock up when you go out the doors to the bike rack. I do real grocery runs on my bike and carry about 25 pounds of groceries sometimes. It is not safe to leave the cart and carry bag by bag to the bike, then leave the groceries in the bike unattended while I go back to the cart for the rest of the groceries there. Need to use my cart! Another choice to get to Vons from back in the 1970's is to stay on Ft. Stockton until it ends at Dove. Then snake through the parking lot that serves the US Bank. Harder now than all those decades ago because people park across the old parking lot skirt and there are now permanent posts preventing cars from going through like that any more. But if you can fit, it's the safest route.

OMG, I hate that section of Taylor. I cross Congress at Taylor and take San Diego Avenue to the right, which is pretty much just a dirt path to the parking lots at that point, over to Mason and then up to Jackson and Presidio. Juan street is terrible, just terrible. San Diego Ave to Bandini is another grind, so is taking Pringle, but at least that way come out near Washington and Goldfinch. Wish this and the Jackson/Cosoy circle could be one way each. That would leave room for both bikes and pedestrians to get through this park safely. Jen Campbell and Steve Whitburn are the council members who should see this video. (Also noteworthy: There is no bike parking for normal users in or around Old Town. One staple in the new park at Taylor and Juan, but nothing else I could find. There is limited secure parking at the transit center for regular commuters for a fee and if you qualify as a person traveling to school or work daily. I ride up and down the other side of this hill (Cosoy/Jackson) 4 x each week. My husband goes down 5 days but prefers Juan for going up. (We ride e-bikes because of the hill killing ability.) Lots of people go up and down on bikes and walking on the Cosoy side. It's heartstoppingly dangerous for pedestrians. Especially anyone trying to get a kid in a stroller down. Thank you as always for bringing attention to these things.

Like you said at 9:55, it is a drag that you have to be impressed by this but since this is what I'm used to riding...I guess I should be glad I don't ride where others ride. The problem with the bike lane being forced onto the sidewalk along Madonna (3:50) is that drivers coming out of the hotels and gas stations to your right don't stop their vehicles until they are right at the edge of the road. I've had to slam on my brakes and skid numerous times because of drivers cutting me off while they try to get onto Madonna. This is also where my closest right-hook occurred while a driver turned from Madonna into that Shell station. I refuse to use the sidewalk through there and will only ride in the road taking the far right lane. Next time you're up this way, check out the bike-specific traffic lights at the following intersections: California & Foothill, Orcutt & Laurel, Orcutt & Sacramento, Santa Barbara & Osos. There are sensors specifically for bikes that will trigger a green bicycle light to provide safe passage for cyclists. All vehicles will have a red light and there are large, illuminated no-right-turn signs for the vehicles. Cyclists are allowed to travel through the intersection in any direction as well as diagonally if needed.

But I ride in regular cloths most of the time, and I tend to dress in colors. I don't run my lights in the day time. I'm not saying this is "the right way," but I cant stand having to constantly charge batteries.

Yeah, why is that bike lane so far from the curb, when that part could be a buffer, I mean, the part that wasn't was still decently wide and not all entirely in the gutter or anything. Also, at 2:35, why do they do things like that, like only have a crosswalk from one sidewalk and not that one(though I guess both are technically legal to cross from) and have those shark teeth there, honestly, in Europe that would imply that you yield to cars on the side streets which there have stop signs.

He's headed South going toward the airport which is the correct way to get toward Pismo. The end of his video is around Broad and Lawrence. About 5 miles farther down Broad, take a right on Price Canyon Road then bike for another 5 miles on that (no other turns) and you're in Pismo. Just be aware that Price Canyon is a 55MPH road though with nothing more than paint to protect from vehicles.

If that stroad was around here it'd still have only a speed limit of 30-35 instead of being like the speed of what is here a smaller scale rural highway/roadway. Now that side thing you turned on would be like 35 probably as far as the sidewalk stretches and then become like 40 or 45, though it mostly depends on the town limits, there is a road with a sidewalk that is in an area that is unincorporated that still has a 40 mile per-hour-limit that crossing(with traffic and especially if you're in a wheelchair or something) would be deadly and there are no lights for a long stretch which is nuts.
