Here is the thing about March madness today. It is not 68 teams. It is well over 300 teams. The reason for that is conference tournaments. A conference tournament winner gets an automatic bid to March madness. And most conferences every team in the conference makes the conference tournament. So in theory, the team could go winless in the regular season, when all their games are March and April and become national champions. As a result, the college basketball regular season means absolutely nothing.

Yeah, The original Baltimore Colts of 1950 disbanded and their players became part of the New York Yanks in 1951. Then the Yanks disbanded and their players were transferred to the 1952 Dallas Texans, who lasted 7 games in Dallas before going bankrupt & becoming wards of the NFL (practicing in Hershey, PA and playing home games at the Rubber Bowl in Akron, Ohio). They disbanded, and some players (Buddy Young & Art Donovan are two players that come to my mind) became part of the 1953 Baltimore Colts, and that's the Colts franchise we're familiar with.

The Seals were a semi-disaster, they then moved to Cleveland to become a bigger disaster. The Gund family wanted to keep the lights on more nights in the Richfield Coliseum to supplement the Cavalers. It was an edifice in the middle of a sheep pasture, now part of a national park. San Jose was a better place, with a dedicated building for hockey. Not as much competition with MLB, NFL and Warriors. But San Jose still has that dense No Cal population. They also benefited from Gretzky in So Cal which made the KIngs much more NHL profile entertainment in California.

Looking back, it's strange to think that the Dallas Stars hold the histories and records of the North Stars, Seals and Barons. But if they're not going to do anything with the old logos and colors, why not give them to the Wild, Sharks, and Blue Jackets respectively?

Growing up in Arizona I never saw a hockey game despite a cousin who played for the Toronto Maple Leafs (Ron Ellis). My first ever exposure to hockey was a TV game in '67 when the Seals played someone (foe long forgotten) to a 1-1 tie. I thought hockey was the dumbest game I had ever seen.....until I moved several years later and became a fan of the Rangers. To this day I love hockey above all other sports. Unfortunately, Arizona just lost the Coyotes so apparently the NHL's instability is still around.

I just saw on the CBC that Ron Ellis passed away yesterday, May 11, at the age of 79. I'm a Torontonian and watching Ron play for the Leafs was very much a part of my childhood. I believe he started "Teen Ranch" on Hwy. 10 as a place where underpriviledged kids could have a summer vacation. This must have been at considerable expense to himself, as he played most of his career before NHL salaries began to skyrocket. By all accounts a very decent man who gave back to the community. My condolences to you and your family.

Nice story. I grew up in that area and went to at least a 100+ games between 1972 to their leaving. They had poor teams but it was still great. The last year they started to win more and have some good young players like Denis Maruk. I still have 3 game used sticks from Ivan Boldirev, Joey Johnston, and Dave Gardner. Final fun fact. During that era their was a phenomenon called, "streaking", where people would show up out of nowhere...naked. Through shopping malls, stores...anywhere. Even a hockey game. Somehow a lady "streaked-skated" on the ice. No lie! I was maybe 15 years old.

Since then, of course, the XFL has merged with the new USFL to create the UFL. The one thing I was disappointed about was that there are still only eight teams in the merged league. What I thought would happen is that they would merge and create a 16 team league. With one NFC team and one AFC team Providing players to each league. Another words, a true minor league. This could still happen in the future. But I’m glad that the UFL exists because it gives players a chance to show what they can do in real game conditions. To either make it to the NFL or try to get back in the NFL. Also is great for players who have used up their college eligibility so they could keep on playing the game that they love at a decent level.

You missed the part where Irsay purposely ran the team into the ground so he’d have an excuse to move the Colts. In that expansion, only Charlotte and Baltimore 1 and Baltimore 2 came to the table with their homework ready. Charlotte was awarded on franchise. Meanwhile, Memphis and Jacksonville weren’t ready. They were told to come back in two weeks to make their pitches. The two Baltimore bidders were asked to combine their bids and were also invited to return in two weeks. Which they did. Jacksonville of course got their franchise and when the combined Baltimore team complained, Tagliabue saw fit to insult Baltimoreceven further. First he told them that they should take their money and build some libraries. Then he told them that the NFL was not in the business of expanding into failed markets. If they wanted a team, perhaps Baltimore could get a team the way other cities had. You know, like Indianapolis did. Nice. Art Modell, a member of the expansion committee, saw what Baltimore and Maryland were offering. He took that proposal to the city of Cleveland asking for something similar. They told him there was no money to build a new stadium but here’s some money for “upgrades” to the ancient cavernous Municipal Stadium. Modell, unlike Irsay, at least had the grace to give the mayor Cleveland notice and did not sneak out in the middle of the night in a snowstorm. After the move was made, outrage swept the country. Even President Clinton put in his two cents. The result was that the NFL expanded into the failed market that was Cleveland even helping them build a new stadium and vilifying Baltimore for grabbing the Browns away like other cities had to get their teams. You know like Indianapolis and St Louis. They let Indianapolis keep all the Colts records and memorabilia and they let Cleveland keep all the Browns records and memorabilia. Two big middle fingers to Baltimore. Then, when Houston Oilers moved to Tennessee, they once again expanded into a failed market and created the Texans. They did not tell Houston to get a team the way other cities did like, you know, Indianapolis. So you missed a big part of the insulting way the NFL treated one of their premier cities, one that pretty much put them in the map in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

I think Gilles Meloche was a great goalie, kept them in games. Used to watch on tv , when Seals were on or against Blackhawks on radio. Too bad what happened. Why the Sharks have no problem with attendance but the Seals did ? Thanks, greetings from Wisconsin. Is Milwaukee ever been considered an NHL town ? I think we are too close to Chicago, this is Blackhawks territory on the northern fringe, and we have the AHL Admirals. Too small a market.

It drives me crazy that Milwaukee is never seriously considered as an NHL expansion city. They support every other sport, it doesn't make sense to me.

@@AllSportsHistory I think that we would have to pay compensation fee to Chicago. This is the northern part of influence of Backhawks territory fan base, as there are some here. But there is Wisconsin Badgers hockey, with great tradition. and Milw Admirals of the AHL. We're just too close to Chicago, but being a smaller market, can only support so many teams like Bucks, Brewers, Packers, Admirals, college teams. That's my guess. Lloyd Pettit tried once , but no go. Thank you for your reply, keep up the good work, I enjoy it.

I hate the Red Sox as I'm a Yankee fan, but I can't deny that I'd hate to see a brand new stadium built in its place. I was torn when the Yankees announced they were tearing down Yankee Stadium and building a new one. I literally grew up in old Yankee Stadium and it was beyond historical. But a new stadium WAS needed. So many great childhood memories there. And Fenway has that same hallowed ground status behind it.

I have to say that owners are known for being stingy a-holes who care little about their players. But I gotta give credit to the Dodgers for not turning their backs on Campanella. Also, there's been a player named Andrew Toles who played four them and hasn't picked up a ball in YEARS, yet he's still under contract on the inactive roster. Andrew Toles was a promising player who suffered a mental breakdown that prevented him from playing. He wound up in a schizophrenic state on the streets. His family eventually found him and are helping him get the help he needs. And the Dodgers are keeping him on the team so that he has access to the insurance needed for that help. Much respect to the Dodgers for that.
