It’s move-in day for the Washington Senators, heading into Turnpike Stadium, on their way to become the Texas Rangers. WFAA. November 1971.

Second team Washington baseball lost. First one (also called Washington senators but also named the nationals prior) is now the Minnesota twins. That senators team was the one that won the World Series in the 1920s, had the tradition of presidents throwing the first pitch, and had one of the best pitchers in MLB history Walter johnson.

Yes, It Was, it was a very sad day. And it would be 33 years before DC would get another team.

The American League should have demanded a new stadium in D/FW by 1975 or threatened relocation (back to Washington would have been sweet). Bob Short was lucky this was 1972. Today, no new market would be allowed a major sports franchise with a shitty facility like Arlington Stadium.
