Sorry folks!! I never posted the video where I used the petals in another "recipe". Many roses from stores are sprayed with a scent to make them smell like roses. That was apparently the case with these roses, so they weren't good for the project. Fresh cut roses with a strong natural scent are needed.

My mother in law did this with a bouquet and ended up transplanting to the yard. That bush is healthy as anything. She put it in the yard over 2 years before she died and she has been gone for 10 years,her roses are still going strong. My father in law thought he killed it one year and tried to pull it up. Well low and behold he did not get everything and her rose bush grew back just as big and beautiful now as ever,lol

if you haven't got any rooting powder around, dipping them in honey instead works well too. :-)
@monsoongirlnyc7 жыл бұрын
Straight up honey or a dilution? I had read honey and water, or spit. Would love to know from someone who has done it successfully. Thanks!
@DavidButler-ox4bv7 жыл бұрын
honey - straight out of the jar. I make a 4cm hole first with the thick end of a chopstick, dip 2cm of the cutting end in honey, then place it in the hole. That simple! From the18 cuttings I planted 5 weeks ago,12 of them are sprouting (it will be Spring here in Oz next month). It really depends on the rose and sturdiness of your cutting, some roses grow from cuttings much more readily than others. Just give it a try! it's the perfect use for all your leftovers once you've cut your roses back for winter.

thank you so much! This is a great help!

you're welcome... unfortunately I've never had any luck doing this technique on shop-bought rose bouquets - I think a lot of those roses are either raised in hot houses and/or their stems are too spindly to get established as cuttings. But still worth a try...

Remember, that leaving at least ONE leaf, you'll get the needed nutrients pulling from the sun Ms. MeeMaw. :) just be sure and keep it MISTED several times a week inside the bag for greenhouse effect and warmth while being covered. I live in Alberta Canada and received a beautiful bouquet of roses from my husband for Christmas. They are already rooting in the vase. I’m going to try this next week with my Folgers coffee container I used to return my chemo treatment bottles to my cancer treatment centre. I just received a clear CT scan before Christmas. No more cancer! Would like to plant a rose bush in the spring to celebrate a new beginning. I’ll have to figure out how to keep it alive next winter! Lol

I watch on HGTV yrs ago a old Black gentleman in the Southern Ga. near Savannah how he grew Roses and other shrubs he wanted to propagate! He had sandy clay soil, he put water in his soil and formed a ball out of his Soil put the clippings like you just demonstrated for View's! That was his technique, he just put them in a box grouped together and kept them watered until they sprouted! Then you plant the whole plant and soil Ball! I have propagated roses just sticking them in the ground, try 6 cuttings in half sun and see what you get! 💓

TY for this video as I am old and in poor health and gave my wife of 35 years a dozen red roses for this valentines. So I am aiming to put some cuttings with roots in our garden. She knows I love her but hopefully she will have a summer reminder even after I am gone. If they do not take root then I will buy some hybrid tea rose. Plus show her how to winter with fall leaves and a cloth cover. Then in the spring uncover them so they do not rot etc.etc. Gardening and cooking has become a shared hobbies of ours. I worked in several garden centers around the USA so I know a thing or two even after that stroke three years ago. So I needed a refresher course on these rose cuttings. Smiles

For 20 years, in the winter when I cut back my roses, my spouse has taken some of the cut off pieces, dipped the end in rooting medium, and poked them down in a 5 gallon bucket of wet sand. He put it under the carport so it didn't freeze, and in the spring he'd dump the sand, and the cuttings would have rooted. He'd put them in the yard, or give them away. They always grew into a rose bush. He did keep the sand pretty wet.

I occasionally buy roses from the store for the table. Ive tried to root them without success. Recently I bought a bouquet and it was a two toned rose. White and dark pink on the outer petals. The beauty of it took my breath away. I decided to try again. This time I just did all the regular things. I cut the roses. I removed the rose...I I removed the leaves at the bottom and sliced and cut the bottom. I stuck it in the water and waited. The leaves fell of so I thought I lost it...but I notice it started what appeared to be a shoot at the top. It stayed the same for so long I thought maybe in was my imagination. But I waiting. I also began changing the water daily. When it started looking like it was growing one tiny root...just one...I started taking my egg shells and throwing them into some water and putting a little in the water when I changed it...also a tiny bit of coffee. It started a second tiny shoot half way up and the root is still tiny but a litter bigger with what appears to be a shoot coming out just above that tiny root. I admit my method sounds crazy...but I really wanted this rose in my garden. I pray it makes it all the way....Ill just keep trying.
@maddams61095 жыл бұрын
I have been successful with this method. Started this process Feb 15, 2019. They are sprouting new growth. Today is March 1, 2019. I look forward to planting them in the garden after April 15, 2019. For my area after last frost, zones 6/7. I live right in the area where both zones meet. I will also watch for the soil temp to average about 70 degrees before planting. Thankyou, for your expertise Jen, I feel like a master gardener in the making.

You shouldn't dip the stem directly in the jar of rooting hormone. it will contaminate the contents. Better way is to take out what you will need and place on some wax paper or a paper towel. then roll or sprinkle the rooting hormone on to the stem.

@@marinehmc Of course you have to make it difficult to remove, more trouble than its worth, because you yourself will take them off and lose them! Try using aluminum crimps on wire, that worked to defeat even my own desire of wanting to remove them to use them elsewhere more than a few times. But over all those years I thanked myself numerous times for going to the trouble of securing a pair in that drawer! I also put a set of screwdrivers on an aluminium wire and while difficult to use, I still have them like that after 20 years about!

Apparently, when Wellington saw mounted soldiers coming over the he said, “They are war horses”. But the helpful geordie by his side said, ‘Na, tha’ ours.’ Even Geordies have trouble reading Geordie, ha-ha. Appariemntly, it isnt a slang dialect. It is a real language originally from Freezland Germany. I can hear a child in the background of your lovely video. Well child in Geirdie is, ‘Bairn’, in Freezeland it’s exactly the same. A baby is simply ‘Babie’.

S B I looked all over as well. No luck! ☹️ I have a sneaking suspicion she forgot 🤔. I mean it’s only been a few years....😏

Read her pinned post at the top. She didn't make the video. But I wish she would now. She's bound to have some nice roses by now to use.

She said some roses don't have the natural rose scent so they put fake stuff on them. She discovered that's what happened with the orange ones so she didn't do the video :/

Omg.. I just found this video 4 yrs later and what a sweet gem!! I wish you were my neighbor.. oh the fun we would have!! I've learned a lot.. thank you for sharing.. my grandmother's and my momma all taught me how to regrow almost anything from just a leaf.. a simple leaf.. well.. they thought they taught me.. cause all I've grown is mold and deceased leaves.. this was a wonderful tutorial.. so fun!! I want to buy a bunch of roses now to treat misslf to picking them apart and regrowing.. I need a good fun project after these last 3 yrs.. hubby & I both had C.. then we split up.. oh my the wild wind roller coaster ride my brain & body have been on.. I need rose therapy asap!!!

I'm so glad Amanda at the fundamental home mentioned this video. I still have flowers left over from my daughter's wedding. I'm going to try to do this so they have a special gift whenever they purchase their first home.

What a beautiful idea!! Good luck! be careful that the plastic bag doesn't touch the stem. i think that's why some of mine didn't make it.

+Farmer MeeMaw thanks for the tip about the bag. I'll let you know how it goes. I'm gonna go get the rooting hormones tomorrow.
