I've lost count of how many of these engines I've worked on. Seemed half the town owned these cars at one point, lol. That one there likes to pee coolant out of the timing cover - did 2 of those jobs. Just about every one I did a coil pack on.All the bodies had severe rust. The DOHC always seems to need intake gaskets, and coil packs (and plugs). Love how the radiator has to come out the BOTTOM on that one - that threw me for a loop years back! I actually fixed an issue with one of these having a "hooting" intake, after watching your video with the EXACT same problem! Been subbed ever since. 👍👍 My neighbor had the Mercury version (Sable), same color too, and about the same miles. When he complained of a misfire, just a quick glance in the engine compartment, I saw the rusty plugs - told him to grab a set. He didn't believe me that this was the issue. Well, when I got the plugs out, I found they were OE!!! 177k! I could only measure the gap with an allen key! A 3/32" fit a little loose! Almost ONE TENTH of an inch gap, HAHAHA! 😂 You can see this car (just before it's demise) in the first 9 seconds of my "FACE MELTER" KZbin video. :) It was stripped clean in preparation for the local demo derby. Thing did pretty good, even with all the rust! None of us thought it would make it 1/4 the way through the first round, lol. When I winched it up on the trailer (still running, but not able to move under it's own power), I saw the fuel line was nearly kinked in HALF! No clue how the thing kept running! 🤣 Great vid, as always, brother Paul! 👍👍
@SmittySmithsonite5 жыл бұрын
@Jimmy S - Ha! Yep, familiar with the spring issue - that was the last problem my neighbor had before entering the car in the derby, lol. I had never seen anything like that happen ... except on my '94 S10 plow truck, where the sway bar broke and carved up 3/4 of the sidewall, lol. Every single one I worked on had blown rocker panels, but luckily never had any issues with the engine cradle (that I know of - most are long gone now). The rust crept it's way backward all around the rear door on most of them, too. I had to completely remove a rear sway bar off one since it was bouncing around, and there was nothing left back there to mount it to, hahaha!

Same setup, Ranger 4.0l. CEL 3 times in 2 years. Could feel & hear the miss for months before the last time. Parts Store free scan: Cylinder 3 Misfire. Watched about 30 videos on injectors, plugs, wires, & coil packs, including all the ways to check, verify, confirm, test, remove, bench test, clean, and replace, plus which brands to buy, upgrades, gapping plugs, and which brands to avoid. With all this new found knowledge & confidence I went straight to the coil pack looking for cracks & a part #. No visible cracks, but hard to see the firewall side at 5'3" even standing on a milk crate. Thinking about going to get a mirror while wiping away dust & discovering cyl. #'s printed between each set of connections, I turned the cyl. 3 connector a little to better see the numbers. When i did, the plastic fastener went sliding down the plug wire. Hmph. I gently pulled up on the connector & it practically FELL OFF. Looked inside the end, and saw pristine shiny metal & connector lube / grease that looked like it had it just been put on. I put it back on pressing down firmly. It looked level with the others so I slid the fastener back up, and put it where it belonged. Although it didn't really "fasten," but neither did any of the others. Silently praying the universal 3-word prayer of "Oh God, Please." I climbed in & started it up. Drove to 7-11 & back. YAY!! NO MORE MISFIRE!! Lastly, but out loud this time, I gratefully said the other 3-word prayer, "Thank You, God."

Dead coils are a great deal of the time a consequence of poor spark plug or high tension lead maintenance, even a wide gap on the plug over an extended time can be the cause of coil failure, it doesn't necessarily have to be an open circuit.

I replaced mine on my 2005 Ford Taurus not too long ago. I was having a pretty nasty misfire after a short hot soak (shutting the car off to go into a store and starting it back up 5 minutes later) it always happened when it was raining I noticed. The one that was on there was aftermarket with "China" stamped on it and the epoxy on the bottom had started to separate from the plastic housing. My guess is that moisture was getting into the coil pack shorting it temporarily but I replaced it mainly because it had china on it. Never had that problem again with the Motorcraft one. I think it was like $65 on Amazon.

Hey SD, I'm trying to look at secondary ignition patterns with my Verus on a 3.8l Monte Carlo with a waste spark system. In trying to set up my scope, it's asking me for the firing polarity...have you covered this before? How would I determine what it is on this vehicle and others?
@opexo5 жыл бұрын
Hello, i have two wasted spark Ford ignition coils and both are working, but for example if i wanted to measure which one of the two is better, is measurement of the resistance of the output coil(s) the right way and which one should be the better one in this case - the one with the higher or the one with the lower resistance. In short, the question is, if both have equal primary circuit resistance, which one will give higher output voltage - the one with higher or the one with lower resistance of the secondary coil. I mean if the difference is in the range of 1-2... to 3kohms maybe, as if its bigger there must be something wrong obviously. Thanks
@ScannerDanner5 жыл бұрын
resistance testing ignition coils is a waste of time unless you have an open or completely shorted coil. I've seen many bad coils measure good resistance.

It doesn't the energy created from the field collapse is looking for somewhere to go. It can build higher than 50,000 volts on the open plug wire side. Eventually this is what "burns out" that side of the coil, or the entire coil in some cases. I should also say that half the coil still fires only because there is a return path, it's just not the other plug wire anymore (when its open)
@jaydrums92625 жыл бұрын

you shouldn't see any resistance between the primary and secondary of a waste spark coil. The ohm test is poor, you could still have a short the the spark can find but the ohmmeter cannot, due to "stress". The ohmmeter put's out 1v at most. That's not much of a load.

1 coil fires two cylinders at the same time. One cylinder is always on compression while its companion cylinder is on exhaust. And they flip every 360 of the engine. Each cylinder gets spark on compression and on exhaust strokes. The exhaust one is "wasted" because it does nothing other than a return path for the spark.

When in doubt, film it! You can always trash the footage that you don't use, and you can never show the footage that you don't get!! How many times have you said "I wished I had filmed that"? Nice one. Back to basics for us NON EDUCATED BACK YARD TECHNICIANS! A.K.A parts changers!! ;-{|}

Is it me or that car has more severe problems with suspension rather than engine? There a worrying loud thump that got my freaked out.

If you don't like Fords keep it to yourself. It's like someone throwing politics into a conversation. People get turned off. As a technician, I see more GM garbage than Ford. Other than that I enjoy your videos.
