Wasteland 3 - What's the Story?

"Dear diary, today I spent fifteen minutes pretending I was a talking car. What am I doing with my life?"
Today we take a look at another giant crowdfunding project - Wasteland 3! The game's still years from release and they've barely revealed anything about it so far, but somehow I still managed to talk about the story and setting information for almost fifteen minutes straight. Enjoy!
I did back the crowdfunding campaign on Fig, but I'm not otherwise affiliated with InXile or Wasteland 3 in any way.
I just love turn-based tactical role-playing games, especially ones set in bleak, post-apocalyptic landscapes.

I agree. That's probably the most painful part about some of these crowdfunding projects. You get all hyped up about a new game, then realize that you won't actually get to play it until years later.

Unless they break the pattern they set with Wasteland 2 and Torment: Tides of Numenera, it's probably going to be later than that. Much later. My money's on Q2 2021.

True. It's definitely a unique experience. Your technically more law enforcement than a single individual who can delve into any direction along the spectrum. All your choices, no matter how good or bad, are designed around policing the various neighborhoods and communities that have sprouted up. Without crowdfunding, this concept? Would probably have died by the wayside as nothing more as chicken scrawlings in a developer's notebook. Hope we get a steady set of strategy games until then. Pillars II looks good until then.

I would much rather have a amazing game and have to wait for it, than have a rushed, half-assed, piece of trash with a sixty dollar price tag.

@poopynuggeteer These assets that InXile showed on Fig didn't seem like asset flips to me. Unity is not the issue here. You'd be amazed if you could see what Unity 2018 is capable of. It's simply a tool, with a very low barrier to entry to n00b developers. In the hands of professional game developers the results can be very different from the asset-flips, which people are used to nowadays.

It definitely looks pretty promising so far. They just released a bit of information about the vehicle system, but I'm hoping we'll hear more about the game soon!

I backed this one up to the point where I could get access to the early-alpha too. Currently the game is about to reach Alpha by the end of this year. I wonder when this Early Alpha will be available for backers. I my self would be happy with a January or Febraury of 2019. I'm also hoping that this time we will be allowed to test the whole game instead of just half of it as it was done for Wasteland 2, where the Arizona part was extremely polished, but the second part in Los Angeles was basically messed up starting from balance issues, quest issues and even the story was cut down and joined. The twist at the end was just too predictable and half assed. I was hoping that we could get separate endings for both end game baddies. Hopefully none of these issues will arise in Wasteland 3. I'm very interested to see what the quest system and weapon balancing will be like? How vehicles will function? Which parts of Colorado can you visit by car and which by foot? I wonder what the size of the world will be? What will the combat be like? Will there be survival elements introduced to the game due to cold and snowy climate?

Colorado Springs is also home to Fort Carson and Peterson AFB, so it sounds like the Patriarch will have his hands on tons of military equipment. That being said if both bases weren't blasted with fissile material then what were they using the nukes for?

Well, I didn't comment on it in the video, but I did find it interesting that the leader of Colorado Springs is the Patriarch and The Gippers are essentially led by a matriarchy. I have to imagine that those two groups don't get along very well.

I agree, the long wait times are the worst part of most crowdfunded video games. It's even worse when the estimated release date ends up getting pushed back, as so often seems to happen. At least we'll theoretically be receiving an early version of the game some time next year!

Interesting stuff, i hope WL3 will be more balanced then 2, even the DC version on the highest difficulty suffered heavily from the game getting tediously easy approaching the half way point

I agree. I liked Wasteland 2 overall, but the game balance really did seem to suffer once you got past the halfway mark.

My only problem with the game is that for how important the marshals are to the endings there’s like only 2 opportunities to gain rep compared to the rest of the factions such as the hundred families and refugees

Yeah, I get the distinct impression that the whole reputation system was originally intended to be much more robust. A lot of content ended up getting left on the cutting room floor, so I imagine there were originally supposed to be at least a few extra opportunities to gain favor with Sheriff Daisy.

Can't wait for this game, but the ending of the previous one and some of the contrived plot points were just so depressing. Case in point, you mentioned the ranger team getting decimated - of course they did. The previous game is just full of the rangers getting slaughtered repeatedly due to coincidences and ambushes, it started getting a bit ridiculous

True, I'll admit - the story in the first game felt a bit rushed. I thought it started very strong, but got weaker once you got to the second world map. A lot of the pieces didn't seem to fit together, and there were a lot of things that just went completely unexplained. The Rangers themselves definitely didn't come across as being very competent. Since the developers seem intent on making Wasteland 3 a more story-driven game, I'm hoping they put together a much more cohesive story!

@@RetconRaider I had the same feeling about the Los Angeles part. It felt so rushed, empty and unexplained. For Dugan I had hoped for a very different ending and a crazy boss fight in an abandoned port in LA. Other quests and maps felt very unpolished, such as the Scorpitron boss fight, Santa Fe Springs and the base of the God's Militia. I really do hope, that this time the alpha and beta testers will be allowed to go through the whole game and make suggestions to change stuff that feels rushed or inconsistent. Those balancing issues were very bad and the Power Armor vs. Energy weapons missery was just the icing on the cake.

Looking forward Wasteland 3 had a lot of fun with 2. I only found Wasteland 2 because of the video TB did on it and Miracle of Sound made a song for it. 2 had a problem I hope they address the best way to use the skill system to open locks was to save scum which I hate. 2 was good game but it never was the best imo its combat was not as fun as Xcom 1/2 ,and companions where not as fleshed out as Pillars. I hope 3 will give us a improved combat system and interesting companions or the journey.

True, Wasteland 2 was a good game but it did have a lot of annoying little things that kept it from being a truly great game. From looking at the vision document that InXile released for Wasteland 3, it seems like they're hoping to improve on a lot of the mechanics they used in Wasteland 2. Hopefully that will pay off.

From what I'm reading, it sounds like you'll still be able to create a squad of four custom rangers. It sounds like you'll only create one at first, for the game's introduction, and then create more once you establish the new Ranger headquarters in Colorado.
