Not necessarily. My dad is a professional guitarist and I grew up in a house full of guitars. But I was never thought I would be able to play until I picked up rockband in highschool. That motivated me to start playing and nothing has torn me away since. Some of the best young guitarists I know have the same story. Despite the bad rap they get, those games inspire the young generation more than they ever could have in the past.

with SRV gone I lean towards Eric Johnson's Texas style to carry the standard. Joe is great but more of a copy in my view. I don't get Beck's out there jazz and Tommy Emmanuel I see as a great talent as well. Versatile but I am drawn to soul and innovation like Santana. British groups blazed some trails as did Jimi Hendrix. Southern rock had Duane Allman, Dickey Betts and Gary Rossington, feel-good but derivative. Who will bear the standard of soul sacrifice in the coming ages? We miss the greats.

I may be stating the obvious, but Joe at 12 is much more interesting, and dare I say, better guitar player than the Joe 20 years later. Reminds me of the arc of Shuggie Otis' career. At 15 years old, cutting a record with Al Kooper, (Kooper Session) Shuggie was one of the greatest blues guitar players in the world, IMO. The most melodic yet soulful blues guitarists I've ever heard. Then 30 years later I saw him in Tacoma, WA and he had nothing left to say, IMO. Where is Shuggie now?
