You make everyone feel good about getting started on their art I guess you are best to just dive in feet first and fully immerse yourself in it and see what magic could happen Thankyou Nicholas for your encouragement you are the best❤

I often start with bold mark making, writing lyrics of the song that is currently in my mind, or affirmations on the canvas. Then start adding some marks with paint, adding in collage pieces, etc. playing!

I like to cover the substrate with a single bright color. This is a habit from painting landscapes, starting with a bright red-orange canvas, which brings the later greens to life. When I start with a bright flat area and draw shapes using another color, with my brush or whatever implement, I will have that first bright color peeking through on the edges of shapes, or through open brushwork.

Love your free wheeling start! Layers and layers is how ai start. I start with one color, then a second and third. Diagonal lines are the motion of the painting.

I like to look at something that I find inspiring and then pick a color or two, a few tools and cover the canvas as fast as I can, rotate it, dry, and repeat until something on the canvas "speaks" to me- it's a collaboration between you and your canvas if you allow yourself to be open to it.

saving all the leftovers in a mud jar is a great way to reduce waste and contributor to those early stages of building depth

Thanks for the great tips, Nicholas. Im new to painting, so I appreciate seeing your process. I’ve been a designer for 30 years and have always wanted to paint…

I tried to start with light colors and very soon I notice that I go very bold in the middle stage. Often I take away what is too bold and continue to buildt up with lighter colors...but the boldness of the colors give me a super response...and I can feel more...that helps. I write in my wet paint a lot of good wishes like "have a nice day", "enjoy life", "confidence" and so on. I want to send out so many good wishes to the world around me because I know...everybody needs it. Thank you for sharing your process!

I start with spraying water and moving around the whole space with led pencils, which creates my tonal areas for when I apply my (generally) 3 values. Thank you every day for your inspiring sharing.

Thanks for sharing this. I feel the same, the start for me is getting rid of the white surface. By adding marks and colors, covering the whole white paper or canvas. Love this starting stage, free and loose, just playing 👍🏼♥️

I often start with a thin cover of a colour, any colour. This inspires me to take the next step as the canvas is no longer pristine and scary.

I don’t think about what I’m going to do. I put a color down and work off that color. For me thinking about it is when it all goes wrong. And when I move to a different Canvas.

How do you get your paint to stick during your next painting session after you used Gambar (varnish) during your first session?
