In this video, I documented my longest and most intense trip that entailed my drive from California to Nebraska with my 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD PRO (Solar Octane) and a 20 foot trailer, picking up a brand new 2022 Ford F150 Raptor (Code Orange) and driving both vehicles back to California. This trip was fun, tiring and educational for me. I hope that if you ever find yourself in the same situation as me, you can use some of the my tips for a smooth journey.

Great video. I was looking into getting a TRD pro and wanted something to tow a camper with. Video really helped me understand how much sag I’d be dealing with.

Thanks man. I'm glad you got an idea for towing your camper. Tundra handled great without hesitation in merging on highways or going up an incline. I know there are leveling kits that can make the sagging much better, although throughout the trip, I didn't even scrape on anything.

I love the new tundra I can’t wait to get my solar octane! One thing I noticed though all 4 of your straps were pointing back, I just feel like your raptor can shift forward when you put your brakes on. Well maybe not since you’re home safe and sound. Nice ride there sick trucks.

Great Video ! - How does the sag on the TRD Pro affect your trip? Also, I feel the engine breaking on the TRD pro is very low due to the small displacement - Do you feel you need to brake hard on the long downhills when towing?
@radridesbyehsanshirazi8779
@radridesbyehsanshirazi8779 Жыл бұрын
Thanks Sean. The sag looked bad on the video but I had absolutely no issues whatsoever with hitting anything or going over bumps. The engine and the 583lbft of torque was extremely helpful. I easily kept up with traffic during acceleration and merging on highways. Braking was super easy once I synced the electronic braking and set the gain at 4.5... very happy. Great mileage of solid 13.3mpgs as well

Do you think 35 inch tires on the Pro would work for towing that weight? Im considering a tire upgrade, but still want to tow up to 9500lbs. MOSTLY WORRIED ABOUT TOO MUCH SQUAT WITH THE Tundra Pro suspension.
@radridesbyehsanshirazi8779
@radridesbyehsanshirazi8779 Жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure that upgrading to 35s would not negatively impact your towing as I've seen plenty of people doing it and still able to tow heavy loads. You can invest in airbags or timbrens if you'd like to. It'll make the truck look less awkward.

Woulda just paid the mark up and bought in CA. Fuel cost, trailer cost, time cost.... I bought my Gen 2 out of state to not pay the markup went through a lot of work.... but My gen 3 I figured I would just pay it.
@radridesbyehsanshirazi8779
@radridesbyehsanshirazi8779 Жыл бұрын
Jason, thank you for you feedback. For my Raptor, I looked and called many dealership in SoCal and NorCal but markup was anywhere from $10K-$25K and wait time was not certain. I bought this Gen 3 at MSRP in Nebraska, rented a nice trailer for $337 and gas was about $785. So, I did pretty good in my opinion. The only thing I needed to do was smog check ($45), commercial weight ($35), VIN verification and register it... So, basically 2.5 days and $1200 saved me anywhere from $8.8K-$23.8K. But, it is not easy to drive this distance in 2 days but can be doable with proper planning.

I'd be curious what you're actual payload weight was. You'll run out of payload before towing capacity in a 1/2 ton pretty quick.
@radridesbyehsanshirazi8779
@radridesbyehsanshirazi8779 Жыл бұрын
As I mentioned in the video couple of times, it was about 9,250lbs (Raptor and 20' trailer) and Tundra TRD PRO can tow 11,250lbs. So I wasn't nowhere near max towing. Truck handled everything just fine (acceleration, braking, MPG...).
@MattN03
@MattN03 Жыл бұрын
@@radridesbyehsanshirazi8779 there is a difference between max payload capacity and max towing capacity. Assuming 9250 lbs of cargo (not including yourself, food, etc loaded on the truck which also need to be factored in), you'd want 10-15% tongue weight which would 925-1388 lbs at the hitch ball. That's your actual payload #. Many half tons will run out of payload capacity before towing capacity and if your involved in a wreck, you could be held liable. Looks like the TRD Pro has a max payload of 1600 lbs according to Toyota's website, so 1600 - 925=675 or 1600-1388=212 lbs left for additional cargo (maybe an extra passenger or family member wants to go next time) depending on how you want the truck and trailer to ride. Just something for people towing near max capacity to be aware of when watching these types of videos.

Nice truck. But as a lowboy driver hauling construction equipment, I noticed all 4 of your straps are pulling forward. In the event of a panic stop, that could launch the Ford forward into the back of your nice Tundra.
@radridesbyehsanshirazi8779
@radridesbyehsanshirazi8779 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback, but they're not all pulling forward. The rears are crossed and harnessed on the sides. Fronts are strapped via axle straps. I did break a few hard times towards the middle and end of my 1250 miles back and had absolutely no issues. This is my 3rd time towing over 1000 miles, and I'm definitely not as experienced as you but I consulted with my buddy that has car hauling business and he approved my strapping method and center position of my load.

Doesnt the trd pro have a tow haul mode to fix that sagging suspension? If not, i would have towed the Tundra home because the raptor would have towed it no problem without the sag.
@radridesbyehsanshirazi8779
@radridesbyehsanshirazi8779 Жыл бұрын
It does have the Tow Hau (light loads)l and Tow Haul + (heavier loads) modes... the video makes it look worse than what it actually was. Raptor's towing capacity is only 8,000lbs so it wouldn't have been able to tow the Tundra TRD PRO.

@radridesbyehsanshirazi8779
@radridesbyehsanshirazi8779 Жыл бұрын
I thought about it initially, but then realized since my Tundra TRD PRO had already over 3,500 miles on it and not brand new anymore. Therefore, I could get a trailer and go and bring the Raptor so that it wouldn't have any miles on it. Plus, I do enjoy long drives once in a while as it gets me out of hustle and bustle of city life in Southern California.
