Watch as we cut 38 Rockwell Alloy 718 - this is some demo

MTD, ZCC Cutting Tools and Hainbuch UK were recently challenged from Intoco Special Steels and Alloys to cut Alloy 718 (widely referred to in our industry as Inconel) in the most efficient way at their manufacturing facility in Cheltenham on a DMGMORI NT 4300/1500 machine tool.
Only one piece of material was supplied so we didn’t get any second chance or practice.
Follow the journey of the complete process from the planning, setting, programming, cutting until the the very the end to find out if we were successful.

There is a man in Sheffield who trepans incanol on old machines with tooling he makes apart from the inserts. Without spending hundreds of thousands of pounds. He has real skill.

You have to admit there are certain people with certain skills that they have developed and practiced on their own. And when they retired or gone, everyone nowadays new to these applications will rely on machine tool/ tooling vendors.

I worked with aerospace grade stainless back in the 90s on a Nakamura TOME TT. Constantly replacing the inserts. Nightmare!

I just started running a Swiss Lathe turning some Iconel 718. Chews though inserts pretty quickly and keeping the spindle slip is crucial to tool life.

even 718 is easy as butter if you get a proper package to do it with

Might be worth mentioning that due to 718 material cost, you CAN'T afford to scrap a part. It's that pricey. (Cheaper to burn tools than scrap a part)
