Too many cheap watches, too many Rolex and Swiss watches...here is a list of all of the watch collecting mistakes I've made so you don't have to. These are my best tips for getting the most out of watch collecting. There is more to watch collecting than just the Seiko Turtle and Rolex Submariner.
About the channel:
I’m just a passionate collector of watches, cars and well-crafted goods. I’ve been fortunate in life and I enjoy sharing my passions with others. I created this channel to connect with like-minded individuals that appreciate fine craftsmanship regardless of price. My videos are casual and have occasional swearing and sarcasm. Elitism and snobbery free, here is a place we can come together to celebrate the finer things in life where all passionate souls are welcome.
Welcome to J. Anthony
Below are just a few of the brands I review on my channel.
Audemars Piguet, Breitling, Cartier, IWC, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Omega, Panerai, Rolex, Tag Heuer, Vacheron Constantin, Zenith, Seiko, Citizen, Orient, Casio, Mondaine, Hamilton, Longines and many more.

1) wait 2 weeks. Chances are you're just lusting over the watch. Wait 2 weeks, do research, and do comparisons. Majority of the time, you'll come to the realization you didnt want the watch. 2) try it before you buy it. We've become internet junkies buying everything online. It maybe twice the price at a store than your online dealer. It doesnt hurt to walk in try the watch on and decide if this is the watch for you. 3) buy everything in cash if you can. Credit card companies put people in debt because they know if you swipe a card rather than handing cash you won't think twice about your purchase. Casinos are similar with chips. Hold the cash it would cost you and visualize you're giving this up for a piece. How much time did it take you to save this money? How many hours of work will this cost? Etc. Youd be surprised how much money you save if you carried cash rather than use credit cards.

I learned the hard way I thought.. now I look back and realize I did it right and I'm lucky. Start off cheap $15- $40 watches on eBay/Amazon. I bought 15+ in various sizes and all styles autos, quartz and digi. I've since moved on in my watch collecting and I know exactly what I like and what size and style watch case I can/want to wear.✔️ I'm so proud of my modest (cheap to some) collection that consist of 14 Classic Reissues and New/old stock watches from Casio digi classics x8, Gshock square, Seiko skx007, Seiko5 autos x3 a gold and two blue dials😍(35-38mm) + a Citizen eco-drive Promaster. Added a few more Seiko5 becouse the ones powered by the 7s26 are all discontinued 😭

I would recommend new collectors early on in the game, to figure out what watch sizes best fits their wrists (lug to lug is important) . Its a really bad feeling after you buy a watch that you adore and spent a lot of money on, to only realize later on that it was too big or too small.
@jamespawelek-lacey1778
@jamespawelek-lacey1778 5 жыл бұрын
So true. It’s easy to fall in love with a watch from the pictures. Go see it in person and be honest with how it looks and feels on your own wrist.
@DurangoC
@DurangoC 5 жыл бұрын
Very true. I can wear a 42mm. A 41 feels borderline too small and a 43 feels borderline too big and cheesy. This can vary a little depending on lug-to-lug and the size and type of a bezel, but I've had to learn that a LOT of the watches that I want simply aren't made in my size, and that I have to let them go in my mind...
@preston5848
@preston5848 5 жыл бұрын
@@DurangoC I don't think that's what he meant. I mean everybody certainly has sizes that work for them best but if you try to limit you're whole range of watches to 42mm rather than say 39-42mm or something it will severely limit your options. I would try to be a bit more open than being strict to a specific size.

That was really good advice, and a good video. I have learned a lot of those lessons myself.... Vintage, I would really say, don't. Just don't. Unless you have your eye on one specific piece, and you have already identified where to get parts, or someone who says yes, they can service it in a timely manner.... The sellers, of these vintage pieces, are mostly lying. "Everything works on the watch". Yeah right. A chronograph, that yes, the main time hands work, but nothing else works. The guy who "assured" me he could restore it 100%, has now had it for 8 months, because he can't get parts.... Just stay away. If you're gonna do it, go in with your eyes wide open, and low low expectations.... I also get very uncomfortable with this idea that a Rolex, or an AP, or what have you, is an "investment". It's not. Even if you are lucky enough to get your money back out when you sell it, service costs will kill you.... And it WILL need service.... So unless you are a well seasoned watch speculator with a lotta free cash available, a watch is NOT an investment.... A slight nitpick... when you say don't buy a watch because it's a good deal.... I mean, yes, if you are COMPROMISING to get the deal, I agree 100%. On the other hand, if you have had your eye on, a Hamilton, or an Omega, for a year.... You have done all your research. You fully understand the range of prices. You are in love. One of these days, you are going to buy the watch.... Now, you go into some kind of store, and you see the watch you are in love with. Brand new. No compromises. Everything is legit. For whatever reason, the dealer has a great price on it. (and yes, you are buying the dealer). But if the deal is 100% there, and it's the watch you want, I have NO PROBLEM if you grab that watch and get a great deal.... I have really scored on some pieces, but, the key is, I had 100% done the research first, and, I knew exactly what I was looking for.... and the piece was 100% what I was looking for.... Lastly, I would say, painful as it is, to do a very honest assessment of your income, and your budget, and your available cash where you can comfortably dabble in watches. I recently saw an AP Royal Oak Offshore.... I wanted it really bad. But, for me, it's just too much money, even being a great deal. I have other things in life, that are more important to me, than the watch.... Obviously, you are comfortable, buying the pieces you have, and that is great. I don't begrudge anybody anything... And, I mean, I "could" buy the watch, if I wanted to... But, for me, it's a no, it's too much. For me, retirement is the goal. If I am wearing a Hamilton or an Omega or a Seiko sitting there in retirement, I am 100% fine with that. It does make me nervous though, when people who clearly do not have the income or the budget, are dabbling in pieces that are well above their level.... Look, if your car is dying, and you can't afford to fix it, and you're eating ramen noodles, because you had to have that rolex.... That makes me uncomfortable, I'm sorry.... It's your money, but.... Basic real needs, should be covered first.... This is waaaay too long, I apologize.... Apparently your video stimulated some thought! Best Regards.

Sent it to Rolex USA. It broke both times. So both times, they sent the estimate for the repair, and they "recommended a full service".... I had been led to believe that to "protect the value of the watch", you should do what they recommend....

Good advice and a lot of what I needed to hear (for the second time actually). I'm looking at my first "big" purchase and I keep getting tempted by mid tier brands (an over-simplification to be sure) when what I really love is high horology pieces, specifically, the 875 caliber Reverso line with the clear case back. Man it's hard to avoid the cheaper pieces when you have the cash burning a hole in your pocket though!

I have 35 watches .... 2 mid tier good hamiltons and 5 seikos and a lot entry level pieces before to buy the hamilton I had 46 watches ...im reducing my collection less quantity... more quality....the problem of entry level pieces is that you can buy it in a rush. My collection isn't large, and part of that is because I pretty much made a rule early on that I needed to hanker after something for at least six months before I even consider buying it. Seems to be a reasonable sort of cooling off period as, if I'm still interested after that long, there's a fair chance I'll hold on to it (so far I've not felt the need to sell anything). Practical upshot is, as there's usually a certain degree of saving, and looking for an excuse, required before buying a new time piece, the real cooling off period can be upward of 18 months or years depending on how expensive the thing I want is. That wasn't the case for the F91w mind, but you get the idea. :P It's all relative.

My advice, as a guy who owns many watches all through the price spectrum (and has owned many more in the past): *Never sell a watch, if you don't have to!* Because, eventually, you'll tire of the watches you currently love to look at, you'll open the creaky box you put the old ones away in, and it'll feel like "Watch Christmas!" ⌚🎄 Also, a lot of watches I have owned in the past (& got rid of) have become "collectible" -- some of them very surprisingly to me... I could have sold them for a bigger profit, worn a cool-but-discontinued (and thus interesting) piece that nobody else (now) has, etc...

Never buy expensive watches if you don't afford them!? Its not worth it. But if you insist, save money and do a lot of research and always buy from a AD (authorized dealer, or retailer) with good conscience.... I always buy my watches from retailer never second hand and if stil expensive then don't buy it. You can always do something else with that amount of money, a trip or vacation you never forget or just live life. If you make a lot of money then go for it. To be honest for an average guy its not worth buying more than one rolex.

Wow great vid. Where to start. I have 7 watches, the one for every day philosophy, but just doesn't work like that, so I wear the most expensive one because you believe it is a shame to leave it home for a cheaper watch, and if you are broken into one day you would rather lose your cheaper ones yeah!!. So I wear my Oris Acquis 46 small seconds 80 % of the time and my other 6, 20% of my time, like my older oris tt1, sector ocean master. Padi turtle. Swiss Eagles sea bridge. And still I want a U Boat Sommerso added to the collection. It's a disease

Anthony, my brother, that was great, sound advice. Especially buy the seller. I think another mistake beginning collectors make is that they don’t take the time to realize what they do like. Or more to the point, to realize what their taste really is. They end up getting pieces that don’t work for them. And fashion watches are just that, fashion. They may work for you today, but not tomorrow. A good thing about more classically designed pieces is that it will fit no matter what the fashion. That being said, if there is a quirky little watch that gets and holds your attention, that touches you deeply. Get it. The only opinion that matters is your own. Again, a great video! Glad to see the blue room again. Also liked seen the cigar with the Panerai. Although my tastes run from Padron to Romeo y Julietta Black Label. All the best! -Mark

Good advice for a beginner like me. I am also dabbling in watch repair. And now that I’ve gotten a look at movements, I am considering saving to buy a Rolex. But I am also torn with the fact that this is something that merely keeps track of the passage of time. The Rolex submariner and GMT are what I am currently coveting now. Hopefully I will continue my research and come to my senses before I spend thousands on a timepiece. Good video though.

Nice vid - I only began collecting in 2015, but I went a bit mad buying some "limited edition" Seiko Giugiaro watches from Japan - a couple I like and will keep, but a few more are just "whatever" and I think it's going to be a looooooooooooooooooooooong time before these even have a CHANCE of becoming collectable and appreciating in price, if at all. That's a problem with "cheap" watches, you can buy too many! If I had the money back I'd spent on those, I could actually buy a watch I really would appreciate instead, like the Ball Trainmaster Streamliner I've got my eye on!

Good tips. I really think the lower priced Seiko automatics are some of the best values going for a lower cost watch. For like $150 you can get a decent mechanical automatic with a display back. That sure beats any of the fashion watches I've seen. The only downside is they are kind of disposable in their own right. Sure, they could be serviced, but the cost would be several times what one paid for the watch in the first place. Speaking of, that's one thing you didn't touch on. Mechanical watches need to be serviced every 5-10 years. For a fairly basic movement, that might be a few hundred dollars. For a high end watch with lots of complications, you might be looking at thousands if it has to be done at the factory. Don't buy more watches than you can affort to maintain in good working order.
@watchout2224
@watchout2224 5 жыл бұрын
If we think that some quartz watches only last 10 to 15 years then having an affordable automatic for 10 to 15 years before they need servicing is just the same. However, the difference is, should you want the automatic watches to last you longer you can get them serviced unlike quartz watches-once they are done they are done. So if you buy a nice automatic Seiko for an affordable price and it lasts you ten years without a service, you have really got your money's worth.
@CrimFerret
@CrimFerret 5 жыл бұрын
@@watchout2224 I don't know where you got that a quality quartz watch would only go 10-15 years. I have one quite a bit older that still works fine as long as the battery is changed every 3-4 years. I do agree that a less expensive automatic that lasts 10 years has definitely given it's money's worth.

@@watchout2224 Nice logic jump there. I was talking about well made quality quartz movements. You know the ones that cost in the same range as a decent mechanical. Yeah those. Here is my tip for the person who is just getting started. Go to AliExpress and other Chinese websites. Buy 1 of each style of watch you might be interested in. Many can be had for under $10.00 . I bought 3 field type watches for $10.00. I wore them for a few months and realized I do not like them. I also realized that most pilot watches are similar so I am not buying pilot watches. For less than a couple of Starbuck's latte's I got the lesson. I thought my holy grail watch was the Rolex Daytona. From another site I bought 2 really bad Daytona replicas for about $20.00 with quartz movements. I found out I do not like the Daytona. Too small, hard to read and I really never use the chronograph. I think Parnis does a great job on homage watches, but I will not be spending real money on any Daytona homages. Again, lesson learned for not much money. I then bought a $20.00 automatic Tevise Submariner homage in 43 mm. I learned about automatic movements, it only has a 10 hour power reserve so you have to wear it every day. But I really enjoy the watch, especially on the Bond NATO strap. I bought 2 rectangular dress watches and I wear them with a suit. I bought a Mickey Mouse watch and Frank Mueller homage with coloured dials. I really like them and I wear them for fun. Those 4 watches cost less than $40.00. Then I bought an automatic Nautilus homage for $35.00. It has become my second favorite watch. I really like the Submariner so I started looking for a higher quality version in blue similar to the Rolex blue dial sub ref. 116619LB. After a few months I found a 42 mm Invicta Pro Diver ref 30092 with a gorgeous starburst blue dial for $75. I love this watch and it is my daily go to watch. Did I make some mistakes along the way. Yes. Spending $150 on a Seiko Flightmaster, the most expensive watch I have bought. I really do not like it. I also bought a 40 mm sterile GMT Coke homage for $75. I hate the sterile dial, I prefer 42 mm in that style watch and now I would have bought a Pepsi version . But I am all in for just over $400, the price of an Orient Neptune dive watch. I am now much better armed to go forward in a much more intelligent way in my watch journey. My next watch is going to be another $20 Tevise in Hulk colors. I am a blue guy, but having a green watch might be fun. Over time I will be upgrading my watches so that they have generational movements which will last and I can pass them along to my 4 sons. Patience is required in this hobby. There is lots to learn.

I've made all the same mistakes, also made the mistake of consolidating most of the collection to 'upgrade'' then eventually going back to the same cheaper watches I had before. I consolidated down to 3 Rolexes which was fun for a few years but ended up selling them all and have Tudor, seiko , MKII and Steinhart now. Definitely enjoy my Rolexes but I like to have a bit more than 3 watches and I also like to spend money on other things besides watches like travelling so I found a happy medium. The main thing is to stick to a budget on what you want to spend on this hobby and don't impulse buy , which is same as buying as soon as you see a good deal...all my regrets were all impulse buys. Some of them I sold and later bought the same model of watch but was happier with it because I got a newer, better condition watch etc. If you wait 30 days before you decide to pull the trigger its going to be less likely you will regret the purchase.

Orient ray 2- my first ever automatic watch that got me into appreciating watches, then got myself a submariner hulk with which I am absolutely in love, then an orient mako USA 2 with the white dial because I couldn't resist. My friends told me to get the classic black Rolex sub, but don't really care for it. Side note, I also got some replica 3135 movements to dissect and resurrect at my leisure- been learning a lot about how they work and honestly considering going to horology school. I won't dare take apart my hulk submariner of course. Currently itching for another watch, but nothing speaks to me yet; maybe a Junghans max bill, who knows.

Your ideas of watch collecting are definitely your own opinion. I personally think that having a collection with all sorts of random watches is where people usually start out. Then as they learn more, they figure out what they like and start to focus on certain brands or styles. I used to have breitlings and Panerai and Rolex and all sorts of things. Then you start to narrow it down and get rid of pieces you have no interest in. Anyone can have a drawer full of watches, but a true collector usually has some sort of theme or focus as to what they are doing.

I bought alot of watches like ancon x35, tissot, gshock, dreyfuss&Co, wenger and tag heuer as my highend horological piece. But yeah I was dead wrong! I managed to get my money back on some of those brand believe it or not specially the dryfuss&Co. I sold them all and got my first crown 114060 then the moonwatch and the latest another crown 116622 blue dial. Very happy with my 3 piece collection which I can easily rotate and used them without any confusion. You cant really get away from mistakes only learned from your mistakes and think over and over before you spend those hard earned money and of course “dont buy expensive timepieces just to say you have one coz most people doesn’t really care what watch you are wearing most of them they will think its a 100-200$ watch” lastly dont empty your bank account for watch!

J. Anthony, I don't understand why an automatic mechanical watch is considered better than an atomic watch. An atomic watch gives the user very accurate time, which is virtually exact time. An automatic watch is considerable less accurate. I know that high prestige watches like Rolex have automatic watch mechanisms, but I would think that the most important attribute of a watch is the accuracy of the item it is measuring which is time. Thank you for your time. I am a beginner at evaluating watches; Please bear with me.
